    • Very nice, well made shelf. Ledger board warped a bit

I'm an avid DIY-er, and there are many things to like/love about this shelf. It is solid wood, which means that for the size it is not as heavy as it would be with particle board, but very sturdy. It is well-supported with the corner joining method as well as in the back cavity opening, so the pieces should retain their shape over time. The finish is stain, which gives it the real natural look it deserves. It is beautiful. The ledger support board is interesting. This appears to be roughly a 1x3 board, pre-drilled with deep countersunk holes on 16" centers for walls with studs on 16" centers. The seller provides wall anchors for support, but strongly recommends finding some studs, and I agree. The ledger is shorter than the internal back cavity of the shelf, so this allows considerable movement to find the studs, particularly with the 72" shelf that I got. You're going to install that 1x3 board on its edge, driving screws into the deep holes and into studs. If you find a few or several studs, you should have ample support, even if you have to use wall anchors for the others. But no way would I use wall anchors by themselves to support the weight of this shelf and whatever you put on it -- you really need to find at least a couple of studs. So if you know where it's going to be placed, take a minute with a stud finder to figure out if you have studs in reasonably appropriate locations to attach this shelf, remembering that there is considerable open space to adjust the shelf on the ledger (which is also why the attach holes for the shelf are not predrilled into the ledger - because they would never line up). Fortunately, my walls were built with studs on 16" centers, so I was in good shape. Next, we get to the form of the ledger board. Mine was warped about 1" downward (or upward depending on orientation) starting about 18" from the end. This required screwing a piece of wood oriented 90 degrees to the ledger to correct the warp before leveling and screwing it into the wall. Once the ledger was attached to the wall, I removed the correction board, because it isn't going to warp after being screwed in and with the shelf securely screwed to it. This kind of warping should be expected by the manufacturer due to the length of the ledger and the fact it is wood. They ought to pack with something to temporarily support the ledger that prevents warping from post-production thru delivery. Warping of the ledger aside, my makeshift fix worked and when I removed the extra piece the ledger was good to go. The shelf is exceptionally solid in place, unlike some of the lesser quality floating shelves on the market. This is definitely a high end piece. If yours arrives with a warped ledger, consider what I did, or maybe the seller has another fix. It only took an extra couple of minutes to correct that problem, and it didn't affect the outcome at all. Another buyer might have returned it for the same issue, which is easily remedied and probably more easily prevented. Without the ledger warping, this would get 5 stars, and regardless, I have no issue recommending this product. But making me grab a spare piece of wood and come up with my own fix takes away 1 star. We are in the midst of remodeling our firebox surround and were looking forward to the arrival of this mantle so we could begin planning the placement of the television, the electrical box, where the tile will meet the mantle, etc. We are very disappointed that we cannot install it and have to return it, which now delays the other installations. I'll start with the one apparent plus, the support system. Although we did not install it, it looks to be a smart hanging design. That's important because this has considerably weight, 23 pounds according to the box. Now the negatives. First, the included instructions are for smaller shelves, not a large mantle and they are an entirely different mounting type. So they have no use and you will have to figure it out for yourself. Second, why did the company take the liberty to inscribe their name prominently on the front? It's not pictured in the Amazon photos but it is large and very noticeable. Be forewarned....if you buy this yours will have the company name prominently displayed on the front Next, we ordered this in charcoal grey and received a black mantle. The box says that it is "espresso." It's black. Espresso or black, it is not charcoal grey. Next, the construction quality. Holes from a factory brad nailer are very obvious at the end of the front (see photo next to company logo.) Then there is the matter of lack of trueness of the boards. Looking across the top of the mantle, along the length, as you would look at a piece of lumber before buying it, you can clearly see a twist, as well as a slight bow along the top front. The twist results in an unlevel top on one end. This is going back. We are also disappointed that there is no contact number for the company, nor do they have a website. We wanted to call them to discuss the problems but that is not an option. Hopefully this Chinese company doesn't give us a problem with the refund. Buyer beware. ... show more
