I’ve had a wood burning stove for some years now and the original temperature probe is kind of burnt out and not responding well. So, I opted to replace it with this moveable magnetic one. It is nice and big compared to the old and a lot easier to read. Additionally, it is magnetic and can be moved to different locations to monitor temperatures. Being magnetic it holds good on ferromagnetic metals with the circular magnet located on the bottom. Currently it’s not burning season. So, I can’t tell you how well it indicates temperature yet but it seems to show current ambient temperature correctly. My only reservation is the magnet holding up over time. Heat is a cause of most magnets loosing their attraction. I hope this is not going to be the situation here. If it does, I will follow up with a review update later indicating so. I had searched on "stove thermometer" and this came up, and I guess I didn't read the description carefully enough, as I was really looking for what I guess is called an "oven thermometer". This thermometer is designed and calibrated to magnetically attach to the OUTSIDE of a wood stove to monitor the temperature. I don't have a wood stove myself, but it seems like the item would work fine. I will probably end up giving this to my in-laws who do have a wood stove for which it will be useful. The product itself looks like it's easy to use (just place it on the stove) and has markings for optimal temperature range. It does not have a face cover, so I suppose it's possible that the hand could get bent/damaged, but otherwise this looks like a good product. ... show more

I have had one of these in the past and really liked it. I ordered this one because I feel that it is made better and easier to read. I use a magnetic thermometer on a wood burning stove to check the temperature. The stove is in the basement and I have an indoor camera to check on the temperature when burning wood. The stove has a catalytic converter and so the temperature stays pretty steady all the time but I like to make sure and that is where the thermometer comes in. It has a magnet on the back and I mount it on the stove pipe. With this new one, I will be able to see the sweet spot a lot easier than with my old one. Since it is not winter yet and I have not fired up the wood burning stove, I decided to try it on our Blackstone grill. It is on the lid so probably not the real temperature for the grill but at least it let me know that it was working and was accurate. Really a nice thermometer and priced right. ... show more

Looks like it is going to do just like the one Dad had on the woodstove flue back in the day. I plan to use my new steel firepit to fire ceramics and maybe a bit of metalwork also, besides just chilling around a fire. Having some idea of the temp is pretty important to either endeavor, grilling would be a third function where the temperature is useful data to have. The price is certainly a good one. ... show more

I have a wood fireplace and there are certainly times when I may have it running too hot or too cold and having a measure would be helpful. I ordered this magnetic thermometer figuring it would be a good option. Receiving it.... it is pretty simply designed and kind of crudely made. I haven't checked it for accuracy as it hasn't been the right season for a fire yet but inspecting it I see that placing it on my fireplace (flat, black front built-in fireplace) likely would scratch it. So, I really don't feel I can use it as received without modifying it. I may be a special case in this regard so if you are looking for a bare-bones thermometer for fireplace or firebox temps this likely can do the trick. I wouldn't recommend. ... show more

No, this thermometer does not have a cover on it. It can't have a plastic cover, or it would melt!!! A glass cover would be expensive and it would also break easily. So just put it on your stove/smoker/grill in a spot where you won't bump the needle. No cover is not a big deal and keeps the price low. Has a wire bail handle to grab the thermometer when it gets hot, to move it if necessary. I am using this on the outside of my grill. It's a big, fun home-made grill for propane and wood cooking. It's lined pretty well with refractory but since we often crank it to 900 F to cook pizza, I want to keep an eye on how hot the outer surface is getting. The temperature difference between this thermometer and the temp gun was about 20 F. Not going for precision here since this is measuring the temp of a non-working surface, not a cooking or heating temp. I'm happy with it for the price! ... show more

I have a wood stove and have been meaning to get a thermometer for awhile. This is a very simple design and has a strong magnet which sticks firmly to my stove. The Thermometer itself is a coil/spring thermometer which expands when heated and contracts when cooled, which moves the dial. There's a 'pull ring' as well which helps you pull the thermometer off if you need to. ... show more
