  • Does the job at a great price
Size: Black-166 Bottle
This is what I would consider a no-frills unit, but it meets its purpose at a great price. I bought two of these as an alternative to a wine storage unit. 3 months in, I've updated my initial 4-star rating to 5 stars because of the value. Pros: Replaces a wine storage unit. As far as I'm concerned, wine storage units are a scam in terms of the number of cases they say you can fit, and which also suck because, to maximize the space, you have to store all your wine in boxes, so you have no visibility as to what's in there and it's pain to find anything, i.e., stacks of cases of wine (who has the time to inventory your wine collection, update labels on each box with the contents, etc.). You also have to drive to your unit, decide what you want to bring home, drag the cases out, load them again at home in your wine fridge, etc. I've probably lost days of my life to my wine storage unit. So having these units at home solves all that for me. It's keeping the wine at proper temp and making the wine easily accessible with the shelving, and it's IN MY HOUSE. And the price -- I'm not sure there are any other brands producing this style unit in this price range. Additional of electricity is de minimis. I hooked up a meter to test this, but based on my pre-existing wine fridges, I don't think the cost is more than $5 a month (you'd spend that on gas just to get to the storage unit). Neither pro nor con: Shelving - I have very similar fridges from an older brand that are no longer being made, which were a notch nicer in terms of the roll-out shelving but which cost $150 more five years ago (so would probably be more like $300+ more expensive with inflation). The shelving on these is a thick metal wire, with a wood front (as clearly provided in the description, which I appreciated). The wire shelving works fine and actually might allow for a bit more space between the shelves, so that they pull out more easily (vs. all-wood shelving). The all-wood shelves on my older model have bowed down over time, which is a significant hassle in terms of pulling the shelves out and pushing them back and frequently damages the labels. I'm hopeful that the metal wire won't bow, but we'll see. The shelves slide on plastic grooves that are built into the inside of the unit. Not super smooth but they're fine. There are two downsides to these shelves though. Cons 1) They don't really have any side support that would keep a bottle from falling off the edge. Twice while I was trying to squeeze a bottle to the back of a shelf, the front edge bottle got bumped and it felt as though it might fall off. 2) Metal is obviously a conductor of everything, including vibration, so I have a slight concern that the rumbling of the fridge motor, as conducted through the wire shelving, could over years impact the quality of the wine. How realistic or noticeable this is, I'm not sure, but high-end fridges do have vibration damping technology. The other critique is that the fridge is a bit noisier than my current fridges. I don't think I'd want this in my kitchen or TV room, but it's not terrible and locating it there wouldn't be a deal breaker. I'm putting this in the basement, so that's kind of a non-factor for me, although if it had been quieter than my current fridge, I'd probably have it located in a more convenient/prominent position in the house. ... show more

  • UPDATE: Fixed the problems and has been doing its job since
Size: Black-100 Bottle
SECOND UPDATE 2020– After replacing the foot and getting the part from the manufacturer and having to replace it myself the unit has functioned as required. I keep two digital thermometers in it, top and bottom, to double check the calibration. The actual vs. read out temperature on the machine is a showing a few degrees warmer on my thermometers. Close enough that it could just be calibration of all three thermostats. It holds a lot of bottles but the trays are so close together it is hard to get some out and put in the back set of bottles. Not perfect but fo the price, vs. the ones that cost thousands, it does what I need. UPDATED REVIEW: This unit arrived with a missing “foot” which took 3 weeks to get sent to me. It worked just fine (Dec. 2018 purchased) until last week when it broke and froze many of my 40 plus wine bottles (digital readout on unit shows 75 degrees, thermometers I put inside show 22 degrees). One bottle burst the cork and leaked all over the inside. Four others had corks that breached the seal and we had to use them up quickly. All of the bottles were covered with a heavy frost. They may be ruined I don’t know yet. They are very expensive wines. I am working through the warranty. NOTE: The extended warranty Amazon sells will not start until the one year manufacturer’s warranty runs out (no where on the listing that says that). So I paid money for nothing it seems on that end. The manufacturer’s warranty I found out after purchase (no where on the listing) says if they have to repair you have to ship it to them, which is a huge expense. This thing is heavy. It is about 5 feet tall. It was shipped in a heavy wooden crate. The cost is prohibitive. Right now they are making me go through a series of self help tests and will likely send me a part to try to replace — myself. If that doesn’t work then I must ship the unit to them. These fixes appear to correct an error when the unit was manufactured. Why do I have to be stuck with that and have ruined wine bottles? I am very unhappy with this unit now. If the self help items don’t work then I may have to wait until the year is up and hope the extended warranty is better (assuming it will do anything at all), or take it out to be hauled away in the trash. I would think the manufacturer would care more about its reputation. Consumers should not be subjected to this. I expect the manufacturers to post a stock reply about all they might do to make up for a badly built unit then. They might as well say I’m in their prayers. OLD REVIEW: Let’s start with the negatives. The unit was missing an “elevated foot” on delivery and could not be set up balanced. Customer service at Whynter apologized and sent out the correct part. I had to send photos of the missing area but only so they would know which part needed to be replaced. Second the shelves are a little hard to work with. They will not pull out all the way unless the door is open all the way because the shelves bump into the stripping on the door. I can pull them out enough to get the bottles in and out. The shelves are close together so its hard to get some bottles in. I noticed that the shelve above can be lifted slightly which will allow for the bottle to go in without fear of scraping the label. Now the good stuff. It looks fantastic. Sleek and lovely. The temperature reached 55 degrees quickly and it’s held that for over two months. The top rack can be lifted to “showcase” special bottles which is a nice aesthetic. I give it a four because despite the missing part the customer service was prompt and good, I don’t give it a five solely because the shelves are a little bit hard to deal with. ... show more
