  • Great generator, watch the oil!
I just read the manual and started the generator. Have run it for just a short time. Here are my pros and cons. Pros: This generator is incredibly light and easy to carry. It is lighter than a standard car battery, and is also very nice looking. It is pretty quiet, and once I started it the first time, seems to fire up quite easily. The included funnel and basic tool kit are nice. Nothing huge, but many inexpensive products wouldn't supply those. The gas drain is readily accessible for storage. Documentation is quite good and readable (good English), except for the issue with the oil below. Cons: Conflicting directions on the oil. The manual says to put all of the supplied oil in, but not to overfill. For mine, putting in all the supplied oil, which is supposed to match the needed capacity, ended up with a significant overfill, which I then had to siphon back out. Additionally, the manual says to fill to the bottom of the threads, whereas the sticker on the side of the machine says to fill to the top of the oil fill threads. I went with the top of the threads. Additionally, I can only imagine the mess it will be to change the oil, based on the recessed oil fill hole. I will be making a 3D printed threaded extension to screw into the dipstick hole to get the oil out beyond the side of the machine. ... show more

  • Perfect for my needs - BREAK IT IN
I got this generator to make sure that my 5.0 cuft chest freezer and side by side refrigerator/freezer ran in the event of a power outage. This handles it with ease. I installed a transfer switch so that I could power circuits in my house and it does fantastic at powering my fridge and freezers as well as two LED tvs, a lot of LED lights in my house, ceiling fans, security system and modem and wifi and more.Id say there would even still be capacity for a small 8,000 btu portable AC but I have not tested that yet. For a generator it is not that loud on half load, though remember its still a generator and it will be loud no matter what. I like that its an inverter and I can plug sensitive stuff right up to it if I wanted. Easy enough to carry around if you took it camping or some other thing. Runs a long time on 1 gallon of gas I was impressed. MAKE SURE TO BREAK IT IN. It does not say this in the directions but ill generators should be broken in. Youtube the process to make sure you do it. Basically you are adding oil directly to the crank case before turning on and then changing the oil every 30 minutes of run time on no load to make sure you clean it out good. This will ensure a solid life. I can start this thing on one pull having done this. Use ethanol free gas if you can, and/or add some stabil to the gas. Good luck and enjoy ... show more

  • Good value small generator that is easy to carry and runs quiet. Quality product that is easy to use!
I was looking for an easy to carry generator to run electric tools. After seeing a Honda EU1000 at a boat show and being impressed by how quiet and light it is, I did not buy one because of the price. This Westinghouse iGen1200 has about the same features as the Honda at half the price. It comes without the oil filled, but the oil is included in the box. You just take off the side panel (one screw), screw open the dip stick and fill in the oil with the provided skinny funnel. (Not all the provided oil might go in! Be careful not to overfill or it will leak out.) Then I added some gas, opened the choke and it started right up with two short pulls. It runs rather quiet and the sound is not obnoxious as with my larger generator for the house. Vibrations are also very light. For a small generator, it seems to be well made and even has outputs for charging electronics directly through two USB ports. It only has two standard 110v outlets, not one of those three prong round outlets that the larger generators have. However, for my intended use to run power tools and smaller appliances, this is just fine. Two things that could be improved upon are: (1) there is no easy way to see how much gas you have left in the tank. You have to unscrew the cap and take out the mesh filter to check. (2) there seems no separate way to shut off just the fuel supply so you can let the carburetor run dry and avoid any starting issues from fuel residue from ethanol gas after storing it for a while. I will need to run it every few months to make sure the gas stays fresh inside the carb. I use stabil gas preservative for all my small engines, and since I do, I had a lot less issues with power tools not starting after sitting for a while. ... show more
