  • Good for the money
Style: Single Speed Pattern Name: Grinder
If you buy tools like I do, where you buy them with the intention to use your tools every now and then and not everyday and don't want to pay an arm and a leg for tools, than this is a pretty good grinder. It works well right out of the box and does the job it is supposed to do, grind stuff. The light attachment is also a pretty nice little add-on but if you do not have a vibration resistant stand for this to go on, the light will vibrate away from where you set it. The size of this grinder will not take over your workbench and it has an acceptable noise level though I would advise wearing proper protective equipment including hearing protection as well as an apron.....ah see you did not think of that. An apron is a weird but useful piece of ppe that has recently gone dark. An apron will protect you from flying metal shavings and you won't know you need it till it is too late. ... show more

  • Great When Used as a Buffer as Well as a Grinder
Style: Single Speed Pattern Name: Grinder
In the interests of full disclosure... I am not mechanically inclined, so you must read this review from that perspective; others with more mechanical aptitude may be in a better position to evaluate shop equipment. I purchased this bench grinder because I occasionally have cutting blades to sharpen, but primarily because I had some buffing and polishing to do on some aluminum pieces from a car I recently purchased. I could have sent them out, but for less money I purchased this grinder, some buffing wheels and the requisite polish. Some assembly was required, but it takes only 5-10 minutes. With the above in mind, I found this bench grinder to be more than adequate. It is very quiet, does not vibrate and has sufficient power to perform the simple tasks I ask of it. It does not bind or slow down when moderate pressure is placed on a buffing wheel and the built-in light is very useful. The rubber feet hold it in place securely and I did not feel any need to attempt to secure it to a work top. In order to provide good access to the buffing wheel, I removed the shroud on one side and mounted the buffing wheel "bare". When mounted in this manner, I had more than adequate access to the buffing wheel, even with pieces over 2 feet long. I looked at a number of units before ordering this one and I'm very pleased with my purchase. ... show more

  • Good for basic needs, perfectly priced, however its far from a perfect grinder.
Style: Single Speed Pattern Name: Grinder
The styrofoam packaging was completly broken in the area where grinder is located. this might explain why the plexiglass shield are in a different area. Luckily there was no damage to the grinder, however I could see now not all might make it as well as mind did. Bolted to a WEN 4288 Cast Iron Bench Grinder Pedestal Stand with Water Pot (5 star stand). The grinder has two centered bolts on opposite sides, and rubber cushion feet. When bolting down i only snugged it slightly to help prevent vibration. Lamp does not include bulb, I installed a 40w LED bulb. Lamp power is independent from grinder power, this is a nice feature. Assembly is simple and straight forward. First use: very slow to spin up to speed, this is due to its lower amp rating. Once up to speed I used the coarse wheel to re-edge an older screw driver. The spark arresting guards work ok, but still lots of sparks got by. Typical in my opinion. Did not notice any bogging or speed issues, but that was a very light job. Moderate to high vibration was noticeable, causing the lamp to shake and change position. The Wen stand was rock solid during the grinding. Second use: 20" mower blade sharpening. I had to move the Plexiglas shields up and out of the way to allow moving the blade around. Using the coarse wheel, there was slight bogging/slowing of the wheel, but seemed to have spun back up in 2-3 seconds or so. Once I used moderate force, I found the little $45 grinder struggling. Switched to the fine grit wheel, and experienced the same speed fluctuation. Overall thoughts.... For the price its a solid purchase for the light light duty home garage. I purchased a wire wheel for rust/paint removal, I will update this with my experience. I own a few WEN devices, and so far they are better than HF tools, but not professional grade. Not that I expected profession grade at a bargain price I would highly recommend this to the basic weekend garage warrior doing light work on metal items. i am content with my purchase, and I give it a solid 4 stars. I took a star away because of the vibration and the loose lamp goose-neck. This is the better of the bargain priced grinders out there! ... show more

  • Small footprint but surprisingly capable grinder for tool steel and more
Style: Single Speed Pattern Name: Grinder
i needed a small grinder to replace my 50 year old home made suicide grinder (open wheels, big army surplus motor, don't even ask about the electrics).Remember the "Primative Pete" movies in show class? Well that was me pretty much. Back then I had to grind everything under the sun for various racing autos and motorcycles and other adventurous fare. Steel of all kinds, Aluminum, Magnesium, TItanium, plastics. Nowadays, drills, chisels, punches. Sigh. After reading the reviews I figured the Wen was just big enough for what I wanted to do and I would not be tempted to go too wild. Yes to experienced machinists it looks like a toy but works surprisingly well for what you need. You could sharpen cutting tools fine with it. Takes a while to spin up (a bit underpowered- kind of humorous to watch it wind up) but once it has some rotational momentum it grinds well without bogging down. Plus you got all these safety features and guards.. Kinda takes the fun out of it. Just keep your tool rests close so as not to jam the work. Only drawback is I cant use the threaded arbor as a rotary reamer anymore or grind on the flat of the wheel. Thankfully.. . ... show more
