This is the second Weller SP80NUS 80-Watts LED Soldering Iron I've owned and both failed within a few months. The first soldering iron I received as a gift and last about 15 uses of about 5 minutes each. After this one failed, I replaced it with the same model per this purchase on Amazon. This one only lasted two uses of about 5 minutes each. I do not recommend this model soldering iron. Weller soldering irons are not the quality they once were. I was expecting this heavy duty iron to late a few years.What I got was a soldering iron that only lasted a few uses.The iron quit working in less than a year, in that time I used the iron less than a few hours. It was replaced by Weller. The replacement also only lasted a few use hours. Never again will I spend the extra money on a Weller, I'll just buy two of the cheaper versions and get the same usage time. ... show more

I make thinline style guitars and wanted a brand for the inside of the bodies that you could see through the f-hole. I used the artwork from my decal, had a brand made by an eBay vendor and used this iron for heat. Works great! Sawed of an inch of the included tip and threaded it for the M5 screw on the brand. Used heat-conductive grease on all junctions for efficiency. Great price and plenty heat. Saved over a c-note compared to a generic Rockler branding iron. I just opened my package and found this iron inside that is very obviously used. It was in a sealed package so someone thought it should be repackaged and sent to me. Thanks. I see writing in pen on the back so someone at a warehouse ok'd this. I'm disappointed to put it lightly. In the photos, you can see solder clumped on the tip and "dirt". Sorry, these are the best pictures I can be bothered to get. Buyer beware! ... show more

I like the soldering iron. I gave it 3 stars because of the very limited selection of tips for this model. The iron comes only with the tip pictured. If you search for tips for this iron you will be disappointed at the selection. Do your research to see if the tips available are the tips you want/need. Good Luck? ... show more

I didn't listen to the other reviews, I treat my tools very well. This iron only lasted for approximately 25 Uses or a total of 10 Hours of on time. No external damage, no sign of what went wrong....... Lets see about the warranty now, Not holding my breath......

I immediately swapped the tip out for 1/4 chisel point which means I should have probably gotten the 40 Watt version. However this iron made quick work of soldering 12 AWG leads to a Lion battery pack that my Weller soldering gun could only heat up. I think the larger thermal mass of the tips makes as much difference as watts used to heat the tip. Speaking of tips: That 3/8 inch tip weighs 1.75 ounces all by itself. Against advise (too big) I got this for some pretty small solder points building a couple drones...glad I did. The added heat over a 40 watt lets you get in, apply solder, and get out. Even using the higher heat of silver-solder was no problem. Leads on BECs, plug connectors, ESC wires. The chisel tip is large and limits some work, you will still need a pointed 40 watt to work close to circuit components...but loving this 80 watter for 95% of the soldering I need to do. Bonus tip: Pair with the "Choice Rheostat Soldering Iron Temperature Controller" (I got mine here on Amazon from completeauctionservice). The 80 watt Iron heats quickly, and can get too hot for small projects and lead-tin solder. The Rheostat gives me a full range of control from hot but touchable, to full on 900 degree.
