  • Great, affordable, effective
Absolutely awesome, especially compared with my old, decrepit 30w iron that I couldn't even find replacement tips for. The temperature adjuster is inconspicuous, does not require a massive base, and definitely works. It has a small non-blinding indicator LED built-in, which is nice for reminding you that it's on. The extra tips are a nice touch although I haven't used any but the standard point. They are much more convenient to change than the threaded little rods on my old iron. It's a remarkable feeling when you have a precise instrument that works with you rather than against you. I used to use a big 100 watt soldering gun for bigger jobs, but with this one being so versatile, the gun may not be getting much use. ... show more

  • Great 60W soldering iron and price is right for hobbyist.
Color: Soldering Iron
I looked at Weller soldering irons first because they were the standard when I was growing up and Home Depot & Lowe's both carry the brand. Yet, the reviews on the WEB were really mixed and I wondered if 'the standard' had slipped a bit or if the competition had caught up. I decided to climb the price ladder and look into soldering stations (and ones with hot air guns). Man, I went down the rabbit hole for a couple days, almost pulling the trigger a couple-o-times on a $120 station. Then, after downing a triple-grande-latte, I recalled I'm a hobbyist who solders occasionally-- I don't need a $100-$200 setup. Duh. So I went back to irons and found this one with variable heat and a great review. I'm very pleased with the purchase. This is the right price and the right iron for me, the hobbyist. It heats up fast, does the little infrequent jobs I need done, fits in my toolbox and I didn't have to read a 70 page manual to operate it. ... show more

  • Wow! I'm impressed so far....
Color: Soldering Iron
Update: Over a year after getting this, the threading that connects the tip to the body kept coming lose, and I figured I would contact the seller (other than this problem, It had been working great -- and tbh I was a bit rough in the way I was storing it). The seller immediately offered to replace it, no questions asked -- and they even re-shipped the replacement when I made a typo in the address I gave them! I could not ask for better customer service. The product itself has been excellent. I'm not a heavy duty user, I solder a few times a month on average, and for that it has been just perfect. It heats up in a matter of seconds, has great temp control, is comfortable, has a nice flexible cord, and uses standard inexpensive tips. It has all of the features I needed as a casual solderer, at a price that no one else came near. ====================================== ====================================== Until recently I haven't soldered a whole lot, and have only used el-cheapo soldering irons, i.e. old radio shack entry level, or harbor freight $3.99 special (although I did modify them with some decent Aven replacement tips). As a recent retiree, I've been doing more and more electronics projects involving PCB soldering, and wanted something a little more robust. I toyed with the idea of a knockoff T12, but the review on them were very hit and miss, so I landed on this baby. Just picked it up a couple hours ago, and so far I am impressed! Pros ==== - Slim, compact, and light. From the pictures I got the notion it was kind of chunky, but not so at all, its very slim and light, and tip to finger distance is nice and short. Feels very comfortable in my 'medium" sized hand (not sure if it would be too small if you have really large hands though). - Heats up fast: Heats up from totally cold to 300C in about 10-15 secs. - On/Off switch and C/F: Some of the other reviews said it had no on/off switch, so it was a very nice surprise to see that it does, and also that you can change temp to F (most irons I looked at didn't support either of these features) - Decent Cord: Not sure if its silicone, but its pretty flexible and I dont seem to need to fight it like the rigid cords I'm used to. - Handle Stays Cool: I cranked it up to 450C, and the grip, while a bit warm, was not uncomfortable. Cons ==== - Not a quality feel: This is partly due to the lightness, but also due to the fact that the shaft has a bit of side to side movement if you push on it. Tightening everything up to the max helped a bit, but the "looseness" is still there. No obvious quality flaws, so this isn't a deal breaker, and at this price I wouldn't really expect more. - Stand doesn't fit the iron: I doubt anyone is buying this for the accessories, but if you were counting on using the included large soldering stand be aware that the coil is too big and the iron falls right through it. It probably could be modded to work (in my case the iron fit perfectly in my old stand so I was good) TBDs ===== - Quality: As I said, my subjective intuition makes me feel like this may not hold up too well, but there is nothing concrete indicating any issues -- time will tell. - Tips: I tinned up and did a couple test solders with the original and one replacement tip. No issues, but again time will tell if they last a couple years, a couple months, or a couple solders. - Temp accuracy/precision/consistency: I don't have a tool to measure the actual tip temp, so I don't know how accurate it is I'll update this review once I've had a chance to put this baby through the ringer, but so far it seems like a great value for only $22 bucks! ... show more

  • Not the best tips for stained glass, but...
Color: Soldering Iron
I wanted a new soldering iron because the one I bought previously wasn't balanced well and the metal stand broke, so I hated using it. This one is smaller in size and its balance is MUCH better; the digital temperature is just a bonus at this point. It's also very easy to switch out the tips. I specifically wanted one with the spiral-and-sponge stand because I think those are significantly sturdier than the little sheets of metal that you bend - although it comes with one of those too. The sponge was comically thin until I got it wet, so I had fun with that part. I do have a couple complaints, though: the plug is not polarized (both prongs are the same size and shape) and there isn't a wide flat tip included, making my intended use for stained glass projects a bit trickier than necessary. It should be fine for electronics, I guess, but I have no experience with that so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ other reviewers would know better. The detail tips would work really well if I ever need to make designs in plastic or synthetic fabric, though! Ultimately, I don't regret getting this soldering iron at all. It's a good size for me, feels sturdy, and heats up fast. I just need to buy a different tip for what I wanted to use it for, and that isn't really the worst deal. ... show more

  • So far, so good...
Color: Soldering Iron
I read the negative reviews on this, and I was concerned, but this thing performed VERY well right out of the box. It warmed up very quickly and melted through the solder like it was butter. My last iron was from Radio Shack and so this one was easy to love thanks to the crappy product I was comparing it to. If I have the problems that some other users have had, such as the base melting and causing the iron to go crooked or the tips becoming brittle, I will revise this post. But, for now, I love this iron. I really like that you can switch the tip out, I like the temperature control. It adjusts the heat almost immediately. I have to recommend this product, because it has performed well for me so far. ... show more
