I received the four-pack in good time. I measured them at 44mm, or 1.75 inches. I had to buy a hole saw since I don't have one that size. The hole was measured up from the bottom so that the nut didn't interfere with the bottom of the 5gal bucket. I made two buckets and inspected/adjusted each of the 4 units I received, tightening or loosening the screws and nuts as needed to make a tight seal. I installed the valves into the two buckets and tightened as much as I could without tools. The buckets were filled with water out on the back porch and leak tested for several hours and had no leaks whatsoever. It would take a person with so little mechanical acumen to make these leak as to be unimaginable. Unless, of course, they got some bad valves. I like them so far, haven't used them for honey but that will happen soon enough. EDIT: Have used them for honey. They work as they should. ... show more

I was happy that I received them on time for our honey harvest day. Very good price, but.... unfortunately the price reflects the quality. When filling the jars, I have to press the gate really tight, otherwise it will be constantly dripping.

Gate works great; with modifications. I added a much fatter O-Ring and also added a flat washer over under the butterfly nut. The larger O-Ring creates a better seal on the bucket and the washer crests a better seal on the gate. I'm happy with the purchase. Before you look at my modifications as a flaw, take into consideration that all other gates come the exact same way as these. This is a great gate and I'm buying more today. ... show more

    • Leaky, awkward to use
This comes with 2 gates. The first one I put on leaked. The gasket was bad, or it didn't line up- not sure exactly why. It was not leaking from the bucket itself, but from the spot where the gate opens. I thought maybe the screws were loose, but they were on tight. The second one I put on did not leak; however, when I used it to bottle honey for the first time, I opened the gate about half way, and honey oozed out and up and around the top of the gate. It was very messy. This can be avoided by applying pressure against the gate while it is open. Again, I thought maybe the screw was loose, but it was tight. This worked well for the little bit of honey I was bottling, but my arm did start to cramp. And it was kind of annoying. I think I will look into purchasing a higher quality gate to see if I have the same problem or not. ... show more

Unlike some reviewers who seem to have leakage issues, these worked great for me. I've been using the "crush and strain" method, straining the honey into a 5 gallon bucket with this honey gate installed near the bottom of the bucket. When it's not being used, I tighten up the wingnut and there are no drips at all no matter how full the bucket is. I really like the little pouring lip at the bottom of the spout that keeps the honey stream going where it should. ... show more

    • Leaks, Warps, and Un-needed Headaches

Of the 5-pack, 2 were functional and 3 didn't properly seal. Both sides of the gate warp over time, so the 2 functional ones have started to leak. Did I mention the tolerance of the o-ring is bad, so they either fall out, or are too big and don't create a flat surface. As others have said, even in good operation the gate moved when the wing nut is tightened and needs to be held by a second hand just to secure it properly. Overall, spend the extra $5-10 to protect your valuable output, don't waste time on these. ... show more
