  • so far its a great unit
I am glad that I finally settled on this unit. I had this unit bookmarked for over a year until I bought it. I decided to mount the unit in our utility room in the basement where we have a utility sink rather than putting it under the sink in the kitchen upstairs. We have two RO faucets, one in the utility room and another plumbed into the kitchen, and as far as I am concerned it is the only way to do this. So far, zero leaks, and it was fairly simple to install. I will however say that the instructions were flat out terrible. The instructions that came with it were for the older plumbing option that they used to have, and mine came with the new connections that were different. It did come with an added piece of paper that attempted to explain how to hook it up, but still was not as straight forward as I was expecting. All in all if you go through it, it starts to make sense and the installation was a success. My total installation including upgrading the valves for the sink, and the sink trap took me about 2.5 hours. I would recommend taking the main shutoff valve that comes with this unit and throwing it in the trash. I went to the local hardware store and purchased a 1/4 turn ball valve that had two outlets on it, one that was 3/8" for the sink and a 1/4" for the RO unit. Get some of the plastic seals and a brass stiffener and you should never have a leak (dont use the brass compression ring that comes with the valve on plastic tubing, they cost about 10 cents to replace with a plastic one). Just looking at the valve that came with it, I was unimpressed and it looked like a future source for leaks. Less than $10 to give me peace of mind. My last issue was that the hoses that came with this unit were fairly short... I went ahead and bought some ice maker 1/4" tubing to extend some of the tubes. If installing under a sink it might be fine, but even still they seemed a bit short. Luckily most of these upgrades were fairly inexpensive. All the hardware stores also sell the push connection Watts connectors which makes for a fast installation. Wasnt too whoopie with the faucet that came with it, but its just a run of the mill RO faucet. Appears all metal or mostly metal. We use the one that came with it for the utility room, good for filling the iron, or just for water in the basement. I went ahead and bought a total dissolved solids meter while I was at it, less than $15, and its pretty cool to see how the water quality improves. Standard tap water in our location was about 360PPM. After flushing the system the first time I was getting about 45PPM through the RO system. I flushed it two additional times and got 32PPM. Have not tested since, but I am satisfied in the 30PPM range. I also think this is a great tool to help you decide when it is time to change the filters. ... show more

  • Watts 500032 5-Stage RO System
This review is for the Watts Premier 500032 5-Stage RO system Ultra 5. I've read a lot of reviews for RO systems on Amazon, and it seems like many of the same reviews show up on different models of Watts RO systems. I just wanted to be clear which system I was speaking of. I've had the unit installed for about a week, and I love it. The installation took me about 3 hours, but that's only because I am a little OCD, and I like to make sure I do every step correctly. I also took the opportunity to replace my shutoff valves under the kitchen sink, since they were old and the handles were busted. The unit feels like it is built very well. This one has a metal frame that the filter manifold mounts to, and not a plastic one. I've seen some people complain about the quality of the tubing fittings on other Watts units, but I had no problem with them on this one. If I do later on, then I'll replace them with better ones from Home Depot. I didn't have any leaks even after the system was fully pressurized. I recommend you follow the directions very closely when it comes to making tubing connections. Be sure there are no score marks on the end of the tubing, which could cause leaks. Also, do not overtighten the compression fittings. They are nylon, and the small compression insert will distort if you put too much pressure on it. The system is a little loud when it's filling the storage tank due to the water running into the drain, but I just put the strainer in the drain, and I no longer hear it. The air gap faucet makes a tiny bit of clicking noise, but I can't hear it when I'm across the kitchen. I was very surprised with the sustained pressure at the faucet once the tank was filled. I can fill a 2 quart pitcher in a little less than a minute. I did not purchase the ice maker kit, but I made my own with 1/4" poly tubing, a 1/4" shutoff valve, and a tee fitting. The pressure to the ice maker/water tap in the fridge is slightly lower, but the water must travel through another 8 feet of tubing and pass through the filter in the fridge before it gets to the ice maker (I guess that makes it a six stage RO by that point). I still get full-sized crystal clear ice cubes though. The water that this unit produces tastes great. I can't believe I've never owned an RO system before. I live in West TX, and what water we do have tastes and smells terrible. This unit completely takes care of that issue. No more lugging bottles of water down to the RO station for this guy. Overall, I gave this 4 stars because of the noise, but I can't fault it on quality of the product. Oh, and if you call Watts customer service, you actually get a real person who speaks English as their primary language. They are very friendly and will knowledgeably answer any questions you may have. ... show more
