  • INDEPENDENT TESTING- Black Berkey Elements (the original BB9-2) are composed of a unique, proprietary blend of multiple media types backed by testing from accredited, third-party labs. Black Berkey Elements remove or dramatically reduce over 250+ typical contaminants that could be present in freshwater sourcesno electricity, tools, or plumbing are required.
  • INCLUDES AUTHENTIC BLACK BERKEY ELEMENTS (THE ORIGINAL BB9-2)- Don't fall for lookalike filters that use our Berkey BB9-2 model number or trademarks in their titles or product descriptions to legitimize their brand as replacements or "compatible", when they are not. Black Berkey Elements are designed to work synergistically and target specific contaminants that far exceed the reduction capabilities of black filters solely composed of activated carbon.
  • ECONOMICAL, LONG-LASTING- Black Berkey Elements provide filtered water for just pennies per gallon. Frequently asked questions

The two Black Berkey Elements (BB9-2 Filters) in your Big Berkey can filter approximately 6,000 gallons of water before needing replacement. For an average family of four, this typically means replacing the filters every 2 to 3 years, depending on your water consumption and the quality of water being filtered.

Yes, the Big Berkey system can remove fluoride from your water, but you will need to purchase an additional set of PF-2 fluoride filters. These filters attach to the bottom of the Black Berkey Elements and together they efficiently remove fluoride and arsenic from your water.

Absolutely, the Big Berkey is highly effective at filtering well water, removing bacteria, viruses, and other contaminants common in well water sources. It's important to test your well water periodically to know which contaminants are present, as this can affect the lifespan of your filters.

The Big Berkey operates using a gravity-fed system. Water is poured into the upper chamber, where it gradually filters down through the Black Berkey Elements into the lower chamber, ready for use. This design eliminates the need for electricity, making the Big Berkey ideal for use in any situation, including emergencies or off-grid living.

  • Great investment
My husband and I decided to purchase a water filter after the East Palestine, Ohio train derailment. We didn't want to go with the typical, mainstream brita water filter or the one that connects to a faucet. We have had those before and the filter has to be changed frequently. We liked that the Berkey filters out forever chemicals, specifically the chemicals spilled during the derailment. It also filters out over 200 contaminants, chemicals and bacteria. Setup was fairly easy, however priming the elements was challenging due to the adapter that fit onto our faucet which was a struggle. The life span of the filters is amazing, as they only need to be changed every 11,000 gallons. Although the filters are pricey, around $170ish for 2, they are worth it in the long run. Using the filter is easy. Once set up, just pour water in the top, put the lid back on and you're good to go. Quality of the materials is unmatched. We purchased a stand off Amazon that elevates the element, which you definitely need. Hoping to get the stainless steel spigot soon to replace the plastic one that came with the product. Lastly, I have to say the water tastes AMAZING. Like water should taste. It rivals the taste of Fiji, our preferred bottled water. Our family initially made fun of us for spending so much money on a water filter, but once they tasted it they plan on purchasing one. I was never a big water drinker before, but now I find myself drinking lots of it. We fill up multiple containers of it whenever we leave the house. Great product, give it a try! ... show more

  • Worthwhile purchase
After caving to the pressure of family and friends to order this water filter, I couldn't be more pleased with it and kicking myself for putting it off for too long. It's easy to assemble (be sure to really tighten the tap!), it fits on my kitchen counter well, and the water tastes exactly how clean, fresh water should taste. Being raised in a city with artesian well water, I got spoiled and have not been able to drink tap water in any other city I've lived in. No more lugging gallons of bottled water home every week or two, no more chemical tasting tap water. The only thing I'm second guessing is that I probably could have done just as well with a Travel Berkey rather than the Big Berkey, being a one-person household. Otherwise, I'm very pleased and would encourage ditching the environmentally irresponsible plastic bottles, questionable bottled water quality, and go for a unit that you can trust. In my case it will pay for itself in just over a year. The filters may be costly but they last a very long time. I won't need to replace them for many, many years. I definitely recommend Berkey water filtration systems. ... show more

Would purchase 10x over. This is perfect for our family and peace of mind. Assembly is so easy, and the filer’s effectiveness is second to none.

  • Works as advertised
After the first priming, my filtered water was a little cloudy. I reprimed... and same thing. I discovered through reading online that I needed to bypass my water softener. Once I did that the water was crystal clear.

  • Beware of Used/Reconditioned Berkeys! :(
I ordered a Big Berkey through Amazon in September 2017. The description said "Sold by: Amazon.com Services, Inc $208.11 Condition: Used - Very Good - Item has no cosmetic scratches or blemishes. Item has no cracks or dents. Item will come repackaged." The Berkey arrived with a small dent in the body, which I decided I could live with. Then when I put it together, I discovered that the black plastic wingnuts were both stripped. Buying new ones online was pretty expensive ($30 for a replacement parts kit), and I read a link that said you could secure the wingnuts with plumber's tape. So I did that, and it seemed to work. In retrospect, I should have AT LEAST complained to Amazon when I discovered the dent and the stripped wingnuts... but I thought they'd make me send the whole thing back, which would be difficult as I don't have a car. The other thing I should ABSOLUTELY have done, which I didn't, was the red food color test. The Berkey black filters are able to filter out red dye 40 and 3 (but not other colors, and not natural dyes); when a unit is assembled and red food color is added to the top chamber water, it's a way of telling whether the system is filtering properly. I didn't have enough red food color available (at that time, it said it needed a tablespoon/gallon!), so I just sort of assumed (again, stupidly) that it was working, and went ahead and used it. It seemed to work. How was I to know? Then this past week, I finally got around to doing the red food coloring test, following a cleaning and repriming. .. and BOTH filters failed. The water came through red, even after I got new wing nuts, and had my husband tighten them (they're supposed to be finger-tight, not pliers-tight, which is probably how the ones that came with it got stripped, by whoever had it before me). I also noticed that both filters had some scratches and minor chipping at the top, which was certainly nothing I'd done. Lesson: IF you are so foolish as to buy a used Berkey from Amazon.com Services, inc (or anybody else, for that matter), make sure to run the red food color test RIGHT AWAY, and hope they will honor your 30-day warranty. I now have no recourse but to go to Berkey and buy new filters for $120, and hope they work. At least if I buy them from Berkey, they come with a warranty! But I"m just sick to think that for the past year and a half, I've been carefully NOT filtering our tap water... and running it past plumber's tape, as well! :( ... show more
