  • NOT RUBBER despite what the description says!!!!
Style: Dimpled Rubber
Ok..its cheap, its made in CH!N@...big shock there.....(so what else would you expect)....but the description clearly states (and I quote) "Dimpled rubber surface to adjust for surface imperfections"....however this is NOTHING rubber on this product. The top handle is hard plastic. The lower (which is what presses against your work when you sand) is ALSO HARD PLASTIC. Not worth the time/effort to return. As it is, a piece of sandpaper cut to 5.25x4.5" will fit nicely under the clamping handle and the two tabs seem to be such that it will hold the paper snug and last.......BUT again...the base is HARD PLASTIC, NOT RUBBER!!! That said, a bit of good old YANKEE INGENUITY can resolve this by adding a bit of old mouse pad between the bottom of the sander and the sand paper and should not mean you then need to cut your paper to a larger size. There seems to be enough under each side of the handle/clamp to allow you to pad the bottom of the sander while still using a the 1/4 sheet of standard sandpaper. Now you may ask...well, wouldn't you want a hard surface on the bottom of your sanding block to ensure that your surface being sanded is even...and yes...in some cases that is true...BUT the bottom of this has a number of 'holes' along the bevel edge as well as in the middle (which make up the clips to attach it to the handle. When I'm doing fine sanding, having a little 'give' on the bottom of the sanding pad does a fine job, esp. with 220 and higher. The mouse pad trick is one I learned from my uncle, who was a fine furniture maker for decades. His original trick was to pad the paper and sanding block with folded paper bag cut to size, old t-shirt material and then when he discovered the mouse pad was good for more than laying on a desk, was his go-to. ... show more

  • Easy to use, and very cheap.
Style: Dimpled Rubber
Very easy to use and very basic sanding block. It's just the right size for me, and worked without any hitches. Took half a sheet in. For the reviewer who said they needed 3 hands to put the sand paper into it, my condolences, because it was the easiest thing I've ever done. This person must not have realized how to work the mechanism. You push the little tabs (in black) at the top, and the red plastic lifts off about half and inch so you can slide in the sandpaper on both sides, very easy to do, then you just push it back in so that it tabs click in place. ... show more

  • Great, Quick to Swap
Style: Dimpled Rubber
Ok, I really don't mind these at all - for wood. When trying to sand some aluminum it was leaving marks due to the holes on the bottom. That being said, for the price they work great. There are a couple of options I've found for sizes that work. Ali/Gator Sandpaper makes 4-1/2" by 5-1/2" sheets that will fit perfectly. This is the recommended size. I have also found a roughly 3" by 7-1/4" strip will clamp in end to end (like in the 400 grit in my picture). 3M sells packs of 9" x 11" paper that you can cut each sheet into 4 pieces of 4-1/2" by 5-1/2" which works out good for the higher grits. And will allow you to make use of the whole sheet. I labeled mine for quick grabbing. If you need a truly flat no holes sanding block I would recommend the rubber 3M one. ... show more

  • Way better than a block of wood
Style: Dimpled Rubber
This thing is great! For the price I'm super happy. I used to just use a piece of scrap 2x4, and this is a huge step up for a small amount of money. It's quick and easy to change the paper, takes an even 1/4 sheet, and has a good grip. One side is beveled to get.into corners and the other side rounded for grooves. Its a well thought out design. Very happy overall ... show more

  • Not Bad At All...
Style: Dimpled Rubber
This is a great little sanding block. Some of the reviewers on here are saying it's impossible to secure sandpaper to it without a third hand, a foot, and a genie's lamp, but frankly, I don't see what all of the fuss is about. It all sounds like first-world problems to me. -Is it a little bit awkward? Eh. Kind of, but once you get the hang of it (like changing it out twice), it's easy and I have found to be a really secure and solid block for my paper. -Is it impossible or exceedingly frustrating to position paper? ...maybe if you have the patience level of a 2-year-old. Just use some 3D thinking skills and you'll be good to go. Personally, I really do like this thing. The 4 stars on "Easy to Use" goes simply to it's not the same as the classic rubber blocks (which I've grown up with). Is it more difficult to use than those? I think not- I think it's just a little different at first. ... show more

  • Good product, doesn't naturally fit 9x3.6 inch sandpaper
Style: Dimpled Rubber
Works great. Once the sandpaper is inserted is is held very secure. The size and shape are great. My only complaint is that a 9x3.6 does not fit properly; you will need to trim your sheet to fit. Part of the confusion happened due to me seeing the "frequently bought together" product associated with this block. I purchased the associated sandpaper and later found out that I had to trim it down to fit when the items arrived. ... show more

  • Cheap.
Style: Dimpled Rubber
OK for the price. Couldn’t find the Blue Hawk version I loved so I tried this. Pros: it’s cheap and the clips on top to replace paper are handy. Cons: see picture. As another reviewer noted there are voids in the plastic under the sandpaper that create tears and consistency issues along the middle and down the slanted edge. You also can’t remove the top but have to slide the paper underneath each side, which I didn’t like, but that’s just preference. ... show more

  • Good Value But I'm Not Sure About Durability
Style: Dimpled Rubber
I have had this about a week and I am wondering how long it will last. It's very inexpensive and if you only need it for one or two projects it should be okay. The handle has a release so you can put sandpaper on it and then clamp the handle down and while it's still working the clamp has gotten looser. If it stays this way I can continue to use it but if it gets weaker it will soon cease to be usable. I think it's a case of "you get what you pay for," and it is very inexpensive so I can't complain but if you have some bigger projects in mind go ahead and spend a few more dollars to get a more durable product. ... show more
