Frequently asked questions

A speed booster, like the VILTROX EF-EOS M2, is an adapter that allows you to use Canon EF lenses on EF-M mount cameras, such as the Canon M50 II or M6 II, among others. Besides enabling the lens mount compatibility, it also effectively reduces the focal length multiplier by 0.71x, which means you get a wider field of view and more light, enhancing low-light performance and potentially improving image quality.

While the VILTROX EF-EOS M2 is designed to adapt Canon EF lenses to EF-M mount cameras, there might be compatibility issues with certain lenses, especially third-party ones. However, most Canon EF lenses, including primes, zooms, and professional L-series lenses, should work well with this adapter, providing full electronic communication for autofocus and aperture control.

The VILTROX EF-EOS M2 adapter is designed to maintain electronic communication between the Canon EF lens and the EF-M mount camera, supporting autofocus functionality. While in most cases, autofocus speed and performance are preserved, there might be slight variations depending on the lens and camera model used. Some users may experience a minimal lag in autofocus speed, but it generally remains functional for most photography and videography purposes.

The VILTROX EF-EOS M2 includes optics that can affect the image projected onto your camera's sensor. Due to the 0.71x magnification reduction, the adapter can actually increase the amount of light entering the lens by about one stop, potentially enhancing image quality in low-light conditions. However, the impact on sharpness and distortion will vary by lens. Most users find the image quality excellent, with minimal to no noticeable degradation.

Users celebrate the adapter's ability to provide nearly full-frame imaging and an additional f-stop for lenses, thereby improving low-light performance and depth of field control. While the adapter primarily supports EF lenses, its build quality and functional integration with the camera’s electronics like autofocus and stabilization are highly praised. The product's value is underscored by its affordability and the quality it brings to photography, particularly appreciated by beginners and enthusiasts seeking professional-grade results without a hefty investment.

Should I Buy It?

If you own a Canon M50 and seek to enhance its photographic capabilities without breaking the bank, the Viltrox EF-EOS M2 Lens Adapter is a compelling purchase. It unlocks a broader range of lens compatibility, improves image quality in low-light conditions, and maintains integral camera functions. Though it falls short for EF-S lens owners needing speed booster capabilities, its pros overwhelmingly make it a valuable tool for photographers. Highly recommended for those looking to maximize their M50’s potential on a budget.

  • Works as described
Size: EF-M AF Mount adapter
Adapter seems to be very well made. Feels solid. It is a pretty simple step up size adapter which also allows the cameras electronics to communicate with the non native lens. Seems to do the job well. Wish i’d purchased this a couple of years ago.

  • If you own an M50 this product will open up you lens choices drastically.
Size: EF-M Speed Booster
This product, and all their products have changed the way I use my cameras. I can now use all my EF mount lenses with my Canon M50. The build quality is as good as Canon, or any other high end lens I've used. Fit was perfect and all electronics worked flawlessly (auto focus and stabilization). This now expands the lenses made for the M50 from 6 to all the EF lenses (which is many). The one thing to take note, before purchasing, is that only EF lenses work on this adapter and not EF-S mount lenses. I don't understand why they can't make a speed booster to allow the use of myEF and EF-S lenses though. The non speed booster version of this product (the one with no optics in it) that they make, allow me to use both types, why can't they make a speed booster that accepts all my EF and EF-S lenses like their cheaper adapter? Besides that one issue, I still recommend this product. It will open up your lens choices for your Canon M50 and is made of nothing but the best quality material. ... show more

  • Makes Life Easier but Some Drawbacks.
Size: EF-M Speed Booster
I love that I have autofocus on my GH5. Dont get me wrong, its not like its a bad product. This is an EXTREMELY budget friendly alternative to having a metabones. The updates to the adapter and to the GH5 only improves it more and more. BUT; the biggest con for me is the noise of the autofocus for video. The autofocus gets me well enough, there are random ghost focuses sometimes. BUT I use my adapter for vlogging because I cant manual focus holding my camera on myself. Even with a rode mic, the whirling of the autofocus is in the audio and it sucks to have because its so noticeable. Having the autofocus find the subject really fast is so game changing but for video, the whirling kills it almost, I just have to walk around with an external audio device and its just more gear to lug around. Otherwise the pros are stellar. The magnification allowing more light in is a huge plus. Your aperture for Canon lenses get close to the actual light you would get on a full body. Be able to change the aperture in body too without having to put the lens on a canon, changing the aperture, and then back to the GH5. Trust me, if you hadn't had an adapter for your GH5, this will change your world. ... show more

  • New Life For EF Lenses On My Canon M50
Size: EF-M Speed Booster
I had an old Canon EOS 80D that broke. And still had 3 EF lenses for it just sitting around, 35-75, 70-300, and 18mm. Since I replaced the 80D with the M50, those three lenses were unusable until now. This Valtrox Lens Mount Adapter EF-EOS M2 fit my Canon M50 perfect and gave those old EF lenses new life. It’s amazing that this adapter with those old EF lenses makes the picture and video quality so much better! I was getting a communications error on the camera at first, but a simple cleaning of the gold contacts on the old lenses solved that issue. I can’t speak for the other Canon cameras this adapter will fit, but if you have a Canon M50 and some EF lenses, it’s definitely worth the investment! ... show more

  • Great for getting more out of your lenses and camera
Size: EF-M Speed Booster
I really like this adapter. I’ve used it with multiple zoom lenses. EF 20-35mm 1:3.5-4.5 USM, 28-135mm 1:3.5-5.6 IS USM, 28-105mm 1:3.5-4.5 USM, and 100-300mm 1:4.5-5.6 USM. The only prime lense I’ve used is the EF 50mm 1.8. It is great with the 20-35, 28-135, and 50mm. They are sharp and look great. The 100-300 retains a lot of light but gains a good bit of chromatic aberration. You get more out of these lenses vs a normal adapter. You gain more of a field of view and get most of your crop back. You still don’t get the full effect of wide angle lenses but still useful. The auto focus slows down a bit but it still works. It tends to bounce around if your exposure is high. I tend to use manual focus more as the AF can still be a bit off but that may also be the m50. ... show more

  • The fit is much improved
Size: EF-M Speed Booster
I've tried both the EF-EOS M and this (EF-EOS M2) Speed-Booster and the speed booster wins in all respects. I enjo the added benefits of the increased aperture and wider field of view using this M2 with my EF lenses. It even works with my wide angle zoom EF-S at a wider angle than with out the boost (even after zooming from 10 to 13 to remover vignette) as 13mm < 16mm (10 * 1.6). But I haven't tried with other ef-s lenses and not all may fit??? But most importantly the fit and finish is great! For me, the EF-EOS M does indeed seems to have a loose interface on the camera side. However, the EF-EOS M2 speed booster has a different interface construction (image top M2, image bottom M). Instead of a multi piece construction it is a single solid body and interface. The result is a precise and solid fit on the lens and camera. ... show more
