Description

With its additional preamp gain stage, amazing power-attenuating Watts control, tube-drive effects loop, unique Depth control and Texture switch, the new high-gain Special 6 Ultra rockets the popular Special 6 platform to the next level. The Special 6 Ultra's added gain stage provides plenty of overdrive for searing leads, bone-crushing crunch, and gristly grind, while its amazingly effective Watts control can reduce the volume to whisper-quiet bedroom practice level – while maintaining the same overdrive tone, texture and dynamic feel. It truly is amazing. The special 6 Ultra features the same unique Volume and Tone controls as the original Special 6, the same footswitchable Boost, High/Low Power switch, and a similarly mod-friendly eyelet board. In addition, the Special 6 Ultra features a unique multi- position Depth control that fine-tunes the low-frequency depth; this feature allows you to carefully voice the amp's low-end to perfectly suit a wide range of guitars, pickups, speakers, and musical styles. The Special 6 Ultra ships with a 6V6 output tube for sweet clean and rich overdrive tones, and to accommodate tone-seeking experimenters, it can accept a wide range of alternate output tubes as well. The Special 6 Ultra also features an all-tube buffered effects loop.

  • Great once you change the tubes!
Out of the box the amp looks terrific. It just has the feel that it was well made, until you look close. But still, for the money, it is nicely done. I fired mine up and approximately 30 seconds later, the sound goes to a whisper. Tried the switches, knobs, and even the preamp tubes, but still a very low whisper. However, I removed the power tube and noted there was a discoloration on the tube socket. Fortunately, that seems to be all that was wrong with the socket. The tube on the other hand was blown. After installing a new 6v6 and the amp is roaring. The clean sound is very fenderish. Adjusting the tone and depth, I was able to get multiple clean tones that sounded very nice. There are many levels of dirt available as you can see on youtube. Overall, a very good sounding amp, at least with working tubes. It stays clean til it's plenty loud for home use or maybe jamming with some friends. Add acoustic drums and all bets are off. Even the distorted volume, a little louder than the clean tone at breakup, will probably be swallowed drums. But at home, it's loud. Since the amp is hand wired and geared toward modding with cheap, unreliable Chinese tubes, having to replace tube right off the bat is only half as bad as it could have been. I ordered replacement tubes based on the reviews at the same time I ordered the amp! Still I have to deduct a star for a power tube that is good for only 30 seconds at 75% volume. At this price and 30 bucks worth of tubes, its a great practice amp with lots of tone. ... show more

  • VERY HAPPY !
After reading reviews about the VHT .. I thought is would be what I was looking for to twin up with my Kustom Defender 15 to replace the reat little 4 watt defender. I play early post war blues especially tuned from Maxwell St. such as played by Robert NightHawk.. Not any music stores around here and theones there are don't carry this amp so I took a leap of faith. First thing I noticed was its weight, reminds me of the Super Beatle head I used to have. Then I noticed taking it out of the box, its much nicer looking then the pictures show (if that matters to you).. Last night I thought I would check out YouTube and get a flavor of what it would sound like.. ooops, Each demo was played mostly with a stat and a ton and a half of overdrive,,, I was bummin" .. My amp heads (3 class A low power) are not the tpye amp you would use for super speed and distortion.. well, as it turns out after about a few minutes I dialed in the sound I was looking for.. GREAT! This is a very high quality amp, I'd pay more for it if I knew it had this bounce and sound. I do believe this is the best amp I have own since the British Invasion... I haven't re-tubed it.. no need, at least for now. I am very surprised and happy, its easy to hear the quality that my Eminence speakers (2).. as an aside, the Kustom amps I purchased are great amps not quite like the VHT but still really good. When I bought the 1st kustom 4 watts it was 99$ the second Defender 14 watts was 149$ as I recall, now this A.M. I see that the have gone up in price almost 100 bux and I wouldn't be surprised if the VHT shoots up in price. If its use will be for creamy super distortion and your pickup are "hot" check out YouTube.. I f you want an all around winner I would buy it again and might do so. Final word's Its great for blues from Elmore James, R .L. Burnside John Lee hooker, its just dialing in what you want. OR travel over to YouTue and have a listen for the speed freaks and the HEAVY overdrive....... UPDATE* amp is getting better by the day, it is a fine amp. However, there has been 1 problem, the #2 speaker (1/4 inch input) the connection nut spun off some how and I went to taking a business part of the amp apart.. It was easy to fix, and I checked out the electronics, very nice point to point hand soldered, all nice and shiny neat and great job. If you do take it apart (I'm not advising it) first pull the tubes so they wont get smacked.. then unscrew the front connection of the handle just the 2 front ones, then the rest is easy, get ready to hold on to the weight of the guts.. better yet, don't pull and push different speaker 1/4 inch male out without being careful because if there is any weakness with this amp its the back connectors.. Great amp.. might buy another! ... show more

  • Awesome Amp
This is a tremendous little amp. It is really what I have been waiting for - a versatile, small, reasonably priced tube amp. First, some context. I mostly play classic rock - late 60's to mid 70's era music, with some newer stuff mixed in. Since it's a head I run it through a Fender GE 412 cab or a home made ported cab with a single Eminence Legend GB128. I mostly play using a full mahogany double humbucker guitar. Other amps I have owned or played frequently include a Champ, 5E3 Deluxe, Peavey Classic 30, and a Silvertone 1481. I normally run these amps pretty much flat-out - that's why you want tubes isn't it!? I think the VHT compares pretty well in terms of tone (5E3 beats it), and feel (Silvertone beats it) but really shines because of the versatility. Possibly my favorite thing is the EQ setup - by adjusting the texture switch and depth knob, the voicing of the amp changes radically, much more so than with the normal three-knob format. It does also have a single tone knob which comes into play after the texture switch, so you can still fine tune it. The EQ, on clean mode, lets you flip between good imitations of the classic Fender, Vox and Marshall sounds - although it does the first two much better than the latter. The next best thing on this amp is the wattage control. Since cranking even a 6 watt amp is not always acceptable VHT has sensibly included a control that reduces the power output while maintaining a lot of the feel of the amp - it is definitely better than a small solid state amp at the same volume levels. Other useful features are the two speaker outs and switchable OT impedance so you're not stuck with one impedance. This model has an Ultra channel which adds a gain stage and enables a more modern sound at the expense of some of the feel. There is also a pre-amp out so it can be run through a larger power amp, as well as an effects loop. So - I think this was a great purchase and great value. It's very versatile and with the wattage control you can run it at volumes from bedroom to band practice. I think this fills the niche occupied by solid state modeling amps, but with the amazing feel of a tube amp that solid state amps don't quite have. Highly recommended. ... show more
