  • Great bit! Highly recommend.
After reading the mixed reviews on here, I decided to buy and test this bit out myself. I live in South Texas, where the soil tends to be closer to clay, so it can be tough digging down because of the dryness. I attached the bit to my Dewalt hand drill and used it to drill holes for some raised beds we made out of recycled wood. Bear in mind that I did this a few days after we had a week of heavy rain, so this made the task much easier. Some users posted some comments suggesting that the bit is not sturdy but I did not experience any issues using the bit. After a quick trial (after hitting a few rocks) I realized that this tool scrapes the dirt upwards, so it needs to be used to drill down a bit and then pull out the loose soil before continuing and drilling deeper. I did install an additional bed on very dry soil and had no issues either. Keep your hand sturdy when using this though as the drill might twist on you when it starts picking up the soil; if you’re not careful, you may injure your wrist. I really enjoyed the ease of use of this product - I’d venture to say it’s ideal for installing fence posts as the hole this makes is clean and deep enough to cover at least a 10” depth. You can extend the width by using a post-hole digger. If you’re installing 4x4 posts (like I did), you may need to adjust the hole for the corners of the 4x4. I used a sledge to push the supports for the boxes into the holes and it worked out really well. I also used this to dig holes for transplanting plants into soil. This tool does a great job of loosening soil. The clean up is also a breeze. I highly recommend this tool. ... show more

  • I have used this for about 2 years now.
If you are planting a lot of plants in the ground this will help with pot sizes up to 4"x4" any pots bigger than that this will not work very well with. Extremely sturdy and works well. You just have to apply a fair amount of pressure when drilling to really take advantage of it.

  • Able to dig through clay
Clay, such a hard thing to dig through, this makes it much easier. Thanks to this I was able to plant my small shrubs. I'm now considering buying the longer drill, but this is perfect for getting a hole either dug or started.

  • Good tool for certain conditions
The very first thing I have to say is to wear safety glasses if you are using a hand held drill. It is strong and does the a good job working through even dry hard soil. It is not very effective in rocky compacted soil. The reason I say to wear safety glasses is that it will throw dirt and small pebbles all over if you use the drill at high speed. Like any small tool it has a purpose and for this one its primary purpose is to break up moderately packed soil without too many rocks or in a garden to loosen soil for planting. It also works well mixing amendments into hard clay to help keep the soil loose. ... show more

  • 3ft holes in clay? No probs
I used this wonderful drill attachment with a Kobalt drill to make 36" deep holes for 12-foot 4x4 fence posts in impossible West Virginia clay soil. Worked like a charm and as expected with ONE easy to handle caveat: it can hurt your arm if you dont hold the gun properly and it spins while you're gripping it. I recommend bracing the gun with your foot as your drill. PROs: excellent value, well built, bend resistant, digs symmetric holes even in tough, clay soil CONS: the torqueing motion of the drill can give you arm pain or cause an injury. Make sure to secure the gun with your foot while your drill so that it doesnt twist your arm if the drill catches on a rock in the dirt underneath. Summary: I would buy this tool again. Why spend $300-$500 on a post digger when you can spend $30? ... show more

  • Great Auger, but needs teeth.
So this is a great little auger if you have completely soft ground with no issues. However, if you have even the slightest of small rocks, clay or debris in the path, it does not like to get through them... Tip of mine just kept getting stopped by clay and the blade couldn't get down into it because of the 1.5in gap between the tip and blade. Just needs teeth on the tip! Overall great quality, width is great, and great for most drills. Tip for improvement: Needs teeth to be able to rip through obstacles to the depth you're wanting. ... show more

  • Awesome
This product is awesome. I do not necessarily use this for planting, but it is an awesome tool for mixing organic material into existing soil. I use grow bags, instead of a garden. I used to till organic matter into the soil with a tiller which worked very well. However, I'm older and unable to do certain things. This tool helps me make my own "potting" soil. I mix leaves, grass clippings, and household organic matter into my soil in the fall, for use in the spring. The only negative is the lower edge of the auger it too pointed/sharp and destroyed a couple of bins I was using for mixing purposes. So, FYI, I found a recycled bin similar to rubber and it works phenomenally well. This fall, so far, I have made 16-15gallon grow bags for my thorn less blackberries and awesome asparagus. Just enjoy what you can do and enjoy the fruits of your labors. ... show more

  • Easiest way to plant in hard ground.
I needed to plant a lot of ground cover on a very hard dirt slope. This made the job easy. Using a battery operated drill, the bit ate through the dirt much easier than attempting to dig with a spade or shovel. In fact I tried that first with little success. The tool may stay on the work bench for a while but when the time comes to plant more it will be there for me. I recommend this item. ... show more
