It does not denote the operational horsepower output of a wet-dry vac, but rather the horsepower output of a motor, including the motor’s inertial contribution, achieved in laboratory testing. In actual use, motors do not operate at the peak horsepower shown. CFM, Water Lift, and Air Watts tested to ASTM standard at the end of included hose." • This thing really SUCKS!!! And it's so quiet too!
Pattern Name: HP
I just got mine day before yesterday and have only had a little time to try it but that's all I needed to see just how much this thing can suck up! It has way more, several times more sucking power than my 1.5hp ShopVac and makes only a fraction of the noise the old shop vac does. Besides its super sucking power I cant believe how quiet it is! I was hoping to find one that wasn't as noisy as my old shop vac but have a lot more suction power and this is it. The first time I turned this on I had my TV on at normal volume and I expected not to be able to hear anything else but the vacuum. Surprise! I could still hear the TV and understand what they were saying without any problem at all! As for sucking power, this thing is like, WOW! I bet it could suckup and hold a bowling ball with the end of the hose. I'm a bachelor with a strong aversion to house cleaning. Add to that a bad lower back and a neck injury that makes doing anything quite painful. So needless to say, but I will any who, my place is a little more than say,, a disaster area. It would just about take a tornado to clean it up. With that in mind this vac is just what I needed. It's light weight and has such sucking power I only have to go across an area a couple of times for it to suck up rocks, sand, dirt, goat heads, stickers, and everything else that has built up over the years. My old shop vac couldn't suck up the same stuff this one did in a minute, even if I run my old one across the same area all day. My only complaint about this one is the wands that came with it. They are so flimsy! Granted, they are light weight, but they are also very crooked. When I stuck them together with the bow in each one going the opposite of the other it almost looks like a snake crawling across the floor. With the bow in each one turned the same way it makes a nice rainbow shape. Maybe not a complete rainbow, but enough to be very notice able. It would really help if they had a little larger inside diameter and a little thicker wall so that there was more to them. Also if they had a larger ID it wouldn't restrict the suction power like the ones it has does. But, other shop vac tubes that are stronger, longer, and don't have a bow in them, will fit and work with it's hose. I have a pretty good upright vac but the beater bar in the head of it likes to catch on a string in the carpet and unravel it wrapping it around the bar in the process. It does pretty good in large open area's, which I don't have cuz of too much stuff. And even though it has a hose and attachments, when using the hose the beater head keeps running and it makes all sorts of noise. I'm so glad that I decided to give this one a try! It has so much sucking power and is so quiet I can hardly believe it. I've never in my life seen or used such a strong vacuum that is so quiet! It probably even has enough suction power to run one of those small roller brush heads that work off of the air flow. Even if it doesn't it still has enough suck power to pull up all but the deepest dirt in the carpet. I highly recommend this vacuum for anybody looking for a new one. You might want to pick up a set of stronger & longer wands or tubes for the hose but it still does pretty good with the ones that come with it. This has to be the best vacuum anywhere for under $100. Besides, if you don't like it you can always send it back. But I'd bet that after you try it you wouldn't let anybody take it away from you for anything. So if you are looking for a good deal on a great vacuum you should give this one a shot. I bet you will be very happy with it. There's one other little thing and that's the bags for it. They are a bit expensive and a little hard to find other than on Amazon. So after using the one that came with it I'm going to try one of the blue wrap around paper filters that I use with my old shop vac. It doesn't have the plastic ring to hold it on but a good sized rubber band or small bungee cord should hold it on over the paper filter inside it. ... show more

  • Very Impressive
Pattern Name: HP
Very Impressed. I needed a smaller vac for my workshop and basement area. My larger svac was tripping breakers since I only have a single 15 amp circuit. I checked the amperage draw on this and it seemed like it would work for me so I took a chance and ordered. So Happy I did. It impresses me every time I use it. It is extremely quiet but perfect amount of suction picking up wood chips and small particles plus great on the dust and dirt. The floor attachment is awesome. Small size swivel head is easy to use and reach small spaces. If you twist the hose the head stay flat. I haven't noticed that it clogs likes others I've used. base maneuvers easily and the retractable cord is great too. I guess the only improvement would be if it could empty itself. We are considering getting another one for upstairs use since we have mostly hardwood floors and area rugs. We tested it on those and it performed very well even without a rotary brush. ... show more

  • Very Good Vacuum, But An Odd Warranty Experience
Pattern Name: HP
UPDATE 08-2020- After 1 month, the cord winder stopped working. I chose to live without it. After 2 more months, the switch would not turn the vacuum on. I called the customer service number and was told (by possibly the rudest person I've even encountered) they don't have, and cannot get, the parts. When asked what the warranty covers, she said: "Nothing really..." Huh? After much discussion I was told NO PARTS WILL BE SENT and there is no where to take the vacuum for repair.I was told to throw it out & nothing would be sent & no refund would be issued. I asked for a supervisor only to be told that there was no supervisor with whom to speak. I wrote to Cleva, the manufacturer, many times. I've received no replies. So, like a terrier on a pant leg, I called back the next day only to encounter the same person. Status: No Parts. No Warranty. A few days later, I tried again. Again, Ms. Evil answered & I was told the same thing. I had a brain storm and called late in the day, hoping to miss her shift at Crabby Vacuum Service, Inc. This time the call was answered by a different person. He said if I send him a photo of the cord cut off the vacuum and a copy of the receipt, he'd send a replacement power head with a working switch & cord winder. Yay! Success! Two days later, I received a whole, new vacuum, complete with accessories. The manufacturer, Cleva, apparently uses a 3rd party for parts. That parts company seems to be way messed up. And Cleva themselves sure are lacking in customer service, since they never bothered to answer my inquiries. However- This Is A Good Vacuum... First- This review is for the Vacmaster VF408 & VF409. Amazon sometimes lumps reviews for other models into a certain item's listing. The Vacmaster VF408 & VF409 are the same machine except that the VF408 does not come with the pet hair rake (as told to me by Vacmaster support). FEATURES- Vacmaster seems to have taken all of the bad things about wet/dry vacuums and eliminated or improved upon them. Some are mentioned below: SUCTION- The vacuum has very, very good suction. From more than a foot away, it can pick up sawdust, even with the cloth bag filter and a tank bag installed. The Torture Test of a vacuum is damp sawdust and talc on rough concrete. Neither of these items proved a problem, nor did the rust chunks that fell off of my truck. EMPTYING- All workshop vacuums that I have owned (about a zillion!) have a lip on the top edge of the bucket for stiffening purposes. This makes dumping the bucket difficult, as some junk remains. With the Vacmaster, the bucket has no lips, so 100% of the dirt gets dumped. And... There are bags available! Cleanup is super simple with bags. FILTERING OF EXIT AIR- One can set this vacuum up for up to 4 stages of filtering- A) Bag (optional) B) Cloth Bag over cartridge filter (optional) C) Cartridge Filter (required) and D) HEPA filter (optional). One bag, the cartridge filter & HEPA filters are included. The cloth bag is optional (but a large coffee filter or other vacuum bag cut-to-fit work). FINE DUST- A cartridge filter is available for filtering fine dust. It worked very well on plaster & drywall sanding dust. I would not recommend it for lead paint sanding dust. (It'll probably filter it, but lead should be handled more safely.) TIP OVER- This short & squat vacuum is oval shaped. When one yanks on the hose to move the unit, the thing refuses to tip over -even when empty. HOSE PULL OUT- Nope! The hose locks in so it won't come out & release dust all over the area. MANEUVERING- The rear wheels are large and the front ones swivel 360 degrees. Scooting this around is quite easy. The handle is large, so one can grab it with gloved hands. STAIRS- It is narrow enough to sit on a step while vacuuming other steps. The downside with steps is that the vacuum weighs 17 lbs./7 ounces with all of its accessories. REACH- The hose is 8 feet long and you get three extension wands of 18" each. That's a lot of reach! GENERIC SIZED TOOLS- The VF408 comes with a two-way wide nozzle. You can take the brush end off and it leaves teeth sticking down to dig into carpet. The floor head is nifty, too. There is a lever to step on to change from bare floor to carpet. The other tools aren't nearly as exciting as these, so I'll skip writing about them. PROMINENT SWITCH Another thing I like about this vacuum is that the On-Off switch is huge, but it did break in a few months, as mentioned earlier. The switch is smack dab on top and is paddle type so it can be found quickly and operated with winter gloves on. CORD RETRACTIFIER- There is a Cord-Sucker-Upper. It's button operated, too. I really like that part because the cord won't try to retract until you want it to retract. (It did break, as mentioned earlier.) HOSE HOOKS- The hose wraps on hooks, so it isn't dangling, but the hooks fall off often. Someday I'll hot-glue them in place. OTHER- There are a bunch of other nice features, but I'll skip them since you're surely bored by now! THINGS I'D CHANGE- I would make the Junk Bucket larger to hold more tools. I'd also remove the bosses where the tools snap on. (But if they were gone, I'd complain that the tools fall out...) WIEGHT- It is heavy, at 17 lbs/7 ounces with all tools. If there were a way to change that without making the thing wimpy, some people may prefer that. (I'd prefer to keep it heavy & strong.) UPDATE- A Complaint- When using the machine to pick up liquids, some liquid drips from the hose where it connects to the vacuum cleaner tank.. It is not a lot of water, but if the floor may be damaged by water, a pan, foil or plastic should be placed under the connector. A gasket is needed! SUMMARY- Very Good Vacuum. Very Questionable Warranty Service. ... show more
