Very fun for gamers. Maximum 4 players. May be slightly difficult to learn for smaller children or people new to gaming.

  • Great engaging game
Style: Casting Shadows Base Game
Game says is for players ages 12+, but our our kids (7-10) loved it and ask to play it daily for the last couple of days. It is a little complicated to understand it at first, but watching a walkthrough on YouTube (there are plenty) made it a breeze. Heads up, it takes each play through about an hr + just because we are that indecisive, so set some time aside for playing ... show more

  • Good game! Needs more
Style: Casting Shadows Base Game
I should begin this by saying that the vast majority of this review is from a perspective of a strategy-lover when it comes to game. The following will be my review of it outside of my issues with game design as it pertains to strategy. It is a very fun game. The only thing holding it back is that there really isn't enough content. It needs expansion to be a particularly re-playable game; specifically it needs more spells, and perhaps a way to play with more shadow companions throughout the game. The rest is my various complaints about how the board limits variable playstyles and simplifies the play of the game without actually being simple to play. I like the hex idea, it's very cool and works well with dealing with ranges of spells, but it is simply *too small.* At any point in the game, you are one hex (two if you're lucky) away from being blasted with spells, which is a gap easily closed by opponents. There is no positional strategy. This removes the possibility of having multiple optimal playstyles, which REALLY limits the amount of fun you can have playing the game, especially if you want to have fun outside of just playing to win. The most effective and seemingly only effective way to win is to get high-damage, or consistent, mid-damage spells as fast as possible, and then use them on your opponents whenever you can. I hate this, because whether you can even get either is very luck-dependent, and if one person gets a good spell early, there's no easy or cheap way to avoid being hit, outside of trying to give the person reasons why they shouldn't destroy you, which is not strategic ability, rather social ability, which does not really fit the genre of game, nor even the game itself. Thus, the game feels as though it was intended to be played on a larger board, one in which you could run away. In fact, I would almost recommend you figure out a way to play the game on a Catan board, as the size would lend itself much better to maneuvering outside of spell ranges and allowing for more variation in how the game plays out, which leads to a generally more fun game overall, because a game in which you can predict 90% of how it will play out is generally not that fun a game. (If you do do this, I would recommend buffing the damage of close range spells a little to help with balancing.) My only other issue with the game is that with the limited playstyles, the gameplan becomes to straightforward, while the actual rules of the game are anything but straightforward. With all the complexities of turns and all the pieces, you can actually become completely overwhelmed with options, despite knowing the exact most optimal move. It becomes frustrating to play in that regard sometimes. My overall opinion of the game is that it's a very good, fun base game, it just needs some adjustments and expansion to be one of my favorites of all time. Four stars. ... show more
