Used it for the first time this weekend. It was still where I left it this morning. We camp on a mountain with high bear activity so I'm assuming eventually it'll get tested🤪 I just have to refine packing it. I have a big washer on a carabineer for opening it.

The item was as advertised. My only issue was that the arrows on the item for which way to turn the screws that secure it are basically unreadable (just molded in the same color and small), and secondary to that the screw heads already started to deform after one trip (so I need to include a larger straight screw driver just to open and close this). But overall it is a good solid option and good for the $. In my case, the unit just fit in the bottom section of my pack. ... show more

Great bear canister and a great price. Sure, you need a tool to open them but that’s a cinch, plus I always have a pocket knife on me when I’m hiking. Doesn’t everyone?? I don’t trust the clear blue plastic ones and they’re a pain to open, especially when you have dirt/grit in the threads and your fingers are cold. Shipping was a day later than expected, but we’ll worth it for the $20 savings from the next lowest priced seller. ... show more

I haven’t had a bear encounter with this to really try it, but it seems well made, isn’t too too heavy and bulky for what it is, and the lid secures very well. I used it for a hike through the Yosemite wilderness and it held up well.

Would add photos but I did not have phone battery up in the Rockies. This was crushed by a bear our first night, must have just stood up and slammed down on it or sat on it because we heard it break. Lost majority of our food and unfortunately had to hike back down the mountain to restock and rent a bear cannister instead. Tried to submit a return but it wants the full item and package which I cannot do as it's laying in the recycling bin in Colorado now at this point. Disappointed because it was my first time camping with a bear cannister and at this point I recommend renting one locally rather than buying outright. At least the locals know what their cannisters could handle. ... show more

    • The real McCoy - very good, very reliable bear resistant container.
This bear-resistant container is on the list of approved equipment available from the US Forest Service Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee, approval #5345, page 11 of the 8/20/2024 publication. This approval means that it can be used to protect one's food supply from bears in wilderness areas, such as the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) in Minnesota. The container provides 500 square inches of capacity and the lid locks on with large half-turn screws. One can easily use a large coin or any other flat bladed instrument to open and close the locks.
