  • Not worth it.
Color: Red
I know this is a "gadget", but I really wanted to like it. I didn't expect nine hours of burn time, but three was an unpleasant surprise. I burned it in my office, so there were perfect conditions i.e. no wind. The wick will actually burn longer than three hours, though not much more, but the flame becomes so small because of melted wax so as to offer no usable light. The price is way too high for what is advertised vs. what you get. Buy it for what it is at your own risk. I think a cheaper LED lamp is better practically. The top reflector helps direct the light quite well; the side reflector is useless. After the first candle burned out I three hours: another reviewer said right at a third of the candle remains in the bottom and never gets a chance to burn. He was right. I’ve lowered my rating from 3 to 2 stars. I’m considering returning this item. ... show more

  • I wanted to like it but...

Let me just say first that this is a review of the lamp alone and not the candles, bundle or amazons service (which is excellent). I really wanted to like this lamp. I’m a fan of many things UCO and own their matches, containers and love their new utensils, but this lamp, their signature product is quite poorly made. It wouldn’t be an over exaggeration to say it belongs at a dollar store. Let me explain why. (please use the pictures as a reference) : I noticed the top didn’t not close straight, the stems were bent, when pulled open one leg doesn’t extend and lock properly making. It look uneven extended, their logo sticker wasn’t centred by any means and there is a chip notch in the back. Keep in mind this is a very simple design using thin metal and should be able to operate properly. At the very least the sticker should be aligned and there should be no chips. If this was a couple bucks at the dollar store then I wouldn’t think much but for $25 it’s a terrible value. I thought that it might be made in the USA so the cost would be more justified but no, made in China. Their margins must be staggering. Also the base is plastic and I can see it breaking or loosening over time. It already barely click closed. That would not be fun to have the candle fall out of the bottom and onto the floor ignited. There are some simple steps UCO can take to make this product better. The issue is that even flawlessly manufactured, being made in China it should cost at most $10 with a healthy margin. The paint quality is great by the way, as is the chain and hook. ... show more

  • Shoddy construction
Color: Green
I got my first UCO candle lantern just after the Northridge quake in LA. We were forced into our van after the house was trashed, and we needed a source of light. The little brass lantern was built like a tank, and lasted me for over 2 decades. Only reason I no longer have it is because I lost it while moving. Just now got around to replacing it with the little green one. The thing fell apart in my hands as I took it out of the box. Took a few tries to get it back together and it rattles as it moves, like it’s ready to fall apart any minute. I really hate to send it back, but it is SO MUCH WORSE than the one I bought way back then. Sad. ... show more

  • Designed in Seatle and Made in China for UCO
Color: Aluminum
I bought this for power outages and maybe camping use. I am an experienced camper not so much with candles. You can't beat candle light for warm light and relaxing glow. LED head lamp can easily beat it for convince and maintenance. I burned through the included candle to see how long and well it works. The candle is rated at 9 hours and I got over 12 out of it. Thought I would be getting a Made in USA product since several descriptions and comments clearly state Made in USA. I saw the Made in China Logo and looked on the box and saw a statement akin to Designed in Seattle and Made in China for UCO. Very disappointing. Apparently, the only thing Made in USA are the very expensive beeswax candles. This is not terribly offensive since the Chinese can make high quality products if the USA importers make the effort to hold their feet to the fire to fulfill the contract. And test the batches to ensure compliance. Most USA corporations don't do that. The Chinese have a big big problem making good brass... After burning the 3 candle unit, I realized you are supposed to change the candle about the time it disappears above the site window. If you don't..... you will regret it. If the candle gets hot enough to melt or the candle jams in the holder it will melt and drip all over the place. This will jam the tube if it hardens and make disassembly difficult (near impossible). The mess can be remedied by dropping the parts into boiling water. Don't use your good pan for this or do it anywhere you don't want wax on (hint- do it outside). The melted wax will spray everywhere from the boiling water. Surfaces with hardened wax film can be cleaned with Lamp Oil or Liquid Paraffin on a paper towel. You will also need to wipe the remaining wax film off the parts after removing from the boiling water. Do this while it is still warm enough to keep the wax liquid. It is a thorough pain to clean after a meltdown. If you try to recover the wet wax make sure you desiccate it thoroughly. The specialty sized candles are a bit expensive; especially the beeswax ones. I am guessing the candles are best to limit use to 4 hours or less at a time. Other than that it works as advertised. The included paraffin candle takes about 30 minutes to burn down the tip and an hour to start pushing up. After an hour it is easier to carry/ move without spilling too much of the melted wax. You do need to watch it. If it doesn't push up the candle will burn poorly and melt jamming the mechanism and lantern. Overall, I am disappointed with the switch to cheaper import, but as long as it works I'm OK with it. ... show more

  • Awesome for cold weather hiking
Color: Aluminum
Can't say enough good things about the candle lantern. *disclaimer, I don't think you're supposed to use it in a tent, but that's where it really shines (no pun intended). I do a lot of fall/ spring backpacking and it takes the edge off when you're in a tent on the cusp of freezing. It's not magic, it won't burn forever or warm up a tent like a space heater, but it will take some of the bite out off a freezing night. Also, you can hang socks around it and it will dry them over night. Haven't set a tent on fire yet. Never had issues with candle burn time, burning when I went to sleep, still going when I wake up. Always on the fence about packing the extra weight, but thankfull when the temps drop into the 30s and below. ... show more
