The Toro Walk Behind String Mower is powered by a 163cc 4-Cycle Briggs and Stratton Engine. The string mower is the perfect all-terrain tool for making short work of your trimming and brush clearing tasks. In contrast to push mowers or hand-held trimmers, the Toro String Mower is designed to help you go where mowers can’t while eliminating the back strain associated with carrying heavy equipment. Built-tough features like a one-piece steel deck and heavy- duty nylon line ensure continuous results and make the experience of slicing through weeds and dense foliage quick, easy, and satisfying. A 22” cutting diameter makes quick work of mowing and trimming chores. The simple trimmer head allows for quick replacement of the cutting line to keep you on the job. The Toro Walk Behind String Mower runs on large diameter wheels to keep you coasting around your property over uneven terrain and through thick grass and weeds. When the job is complete, you simply wheel the unit back to the garage and fold down the handlebars for easier storage.

My backyard had become overgrown and I needed to get it under control. Deep, eight to ten inch vines, with weeds growing out of that mess were a challenge for my hand held string trimmer. I needed power, and the ability to just knock that stuff down. I looked at several manufacturers products, but settled on the Toro, as I've several other Toro products in my garage. The main reason was the Briggs and Stratton motor. I know those motors, and my mower shop recommends Briggs and Stratton motors. Why purchase an unknown motor, that your mower shop.may not be able to service? I tore into my third of an acre back yard. The provided strings work well, and the machine went through eight to ten inch deep vines and weeds without hesitation. The strings last a long time, shorter running time, if you are dealing with small woody plants. I only needed to change out the strings three times, in a day's work. Changing the strings isn't hard, nor time consuming. I was able to stop, change out the strings in five minutes, or less. Maybe faster as I get used to the machine. Well made, powerful, easy to use, and maintain. Perfect for my needs. Easy to push, steer, and control. Does well on sloping areas. I recommend the Toro, has the power, ease of use, and a guaranteed to start motor, thats easy to maintain. It is easy to start, quiet, and a real relief from hand held versions. I use it for trimming along the vine rows in the vineyard. The only problem is that it is a bit difficult to control over rough terrain. Bumps such as gopher mounds or dips from tractor wheels make steering difficult. Otherwise I love it. ... show more

I bought this from Amazon because I could not find it at a local brick and mortar retailer. Out of the box this product was easy to assemble and worked great. Strings are easy to change out by following the instructions provided. Cleared a lot of thick weeds with ease. It was a little hard to use on steep banks by going uphill, better going downhill. Then....it started making loud noises and the stop bar ceased working. I checked underneath and bolts and other parts had fallen out of the flywheel attached to the engine, and it was loose. I contacted Toro, as it was under warranty, and was referred to contact a local repair place. I called two and they were unable to provide service as they could not obtain the parts. I emailed Toro and was provided a number to a parts dealer. They were unable to obtain the parts. This process took about two weeks of waiting on emails. I contacted Amazon via telephone and they replaced the item at no cost. Whoever assembled this did so poorly by not securing the bolt. Read the directions; install the shield and pusher; & add oil and gas. Started right away and runs fine. There is enough power to handle higher growth areas of grass on my lawn. The unit gives me about 18” from mulch areas so the garden tractor doesn’t have to get too close or throw mulch onto the lawn. Been using it several weeks and performance is consistent. Always high octane fuel with small engines; they run better. Low octane fuel can cause small equipment engines to fail.     • Hate it when things don’t start and other “stuff” happens

First off, the oil that comes with the unit was punctured and made quite a mess in the box. After getting it assembled (easy), new fuel and new oil, it will not start. Called most local dealer ( 50 miles away), said there may be air in the carburetor and to remove the spark plug etc etc . Not really how I wanted to spend day 1 with this not cheap mower Two days later while using the machine the bottom pulley flew off. I hauled the unit that 50 miles, and the mechanic said it looked like there were no set screws. On the pulley. MWas told they may have to order parts! Now a week later, with less than 2 hours of use, they still don’t have it fixed. I’m not blaming them for this corrupt piece of equipment. I do expect better quality from Toro however ... show more

    • Cleaned up a cemetery
Style: 163cc Walk-Behind String Mower
Used it to clean up a cemetery from the 1800's with 20" tall weeds, grass and vines. It does not pull into objects (stones) which means you don't have to worry about it damaging them. It is stable enough on the wheels to stay where you put it. It started on the first pull, as promised. It was easy to pull and push. The very tall weeds did wrap around the pulley. I cleared it with each refueling. I recommend having something like curved hemostats to pull the wrapped grass off the pulley. It does seem to be fuel hungry. I had previously tried cleaning the same cemetery with my Milwaukee cordless trimmer and went through five 9.0 batteries and only got 1/3 of it done. With this machine, I finished everything and went back over where I had used the Milwaukee in 45 minutes, and it was very wet. On day 2, I used it to clear a steep bank that is not mowable behind my dad's garage. It took only 15 minutes. Really so much better than a hand-held string trimmer. I'm happy with the purchase thus far. The only negatives: It is at about the max that I can lift into the back of my truck. If you install the supplied additional rubber guard, don't bother with the supplied screws. They should have supplied locking nuts. It took only an hour to lose one of them. The toothed tightening mechanism for the handle does not stay tight. I've had to retighten it 4x in two usages. I'll keep an eye on that and probably put a locking pin on it. I think the same issue will occur with the spark arrestor that was supplied for the muffler - that won't stay in with that one little screw. But I can accept these issues for the job it does if nothing else occurs. ... show more
