  • Nice rack!
Color: Standard Size: Disc Style: No Spring
The Topeak Explorer Tubular Rack with Disc Mounts w/o spring manufacturer number TA 2035 B arrived intact and on time with two day shipping. I attached it to a Specialized CrossTrail Disc, 2014 or 2013 model year, requiring some bending down, maybe 2-3 inches, of the two chrome mounting bracket arms. Fits well. Unit impressively solid despite light weight. No wiggle or give. The short instructions might mislead the mechanically disinclined, so... IMPORTANT: Instructions say BEND the bracket arms to fit, but the arms are not meant to be BENT REPEATEDLY. This means be wary carefuwl to pre-fit the entire unit before you tighten all fasteners and commit to the bends you make. The arms will break if you flex them back and forth or in multiple places. Much cursing and aggravation will ensue, you will still not have a bike rack, and will have to go through the whole procurement process again. To avoid this, I recommend temporarily tightening the axle bolts sufficiently to support the MTX rack platform at the angle you want...horizontal or close to it...then eyeballing both how the bracket arms need to be bent to join with the pre drilled threaded mounts on the bike frame, and which of the three bracket arm slots should be used to attach to the rack. Then attach the arms to the rack loosely enough to push around, but tight enough to stay where you move them, and eyeball again. It may take some trial and error and several iterations of tightening and loosening the two bolts connecting each bracket arm to the rack to position the bracket arm's forward arm hole where it can be bent to match the mount holes on the bike frame. The most important thing is to first attach the rack to the axle snug enough to hold in place so you can gauge where to attach the bracket arms. Some bikes, like the Giant FastRoad SLR, do not have threaded mounts, basically mocking any philistine who would mount a rack on such a sweet ride. I find it good practice to add a few molecules of Never Seize or some lubricant to any threaded fasteners in case you ever need to remove the thing. I have an old bike whose attached parts without such treatment basically melted together into one solid object. Again, the cursing and aggravation thing. I simultaneously purchased the Topeak MTX TrunkBag DXP which slides on with no rattle or play. Of course, you can jury rig and lash any non Topeak MTX objects to this rack, but take care not to damage the MTX rails for future use with MTX compatible products. ... show more

  • Fits great, looks great, easy to use
Color: Standard Size: Disc Style: No Spring
Bottle this to mount to my new bike, which has disc breaks. My old bike also has disc breaks, and I have a track for it too. But the rack I got for that was made by the same people who made the bike, and it said it was compatible, but the differences are obvious. Mainly, the old rack comes straight down and screws in, instead of having the wide posts like this one has. It's not actually an issue with brake compatibility; that bike also came with fenders, as does the new one.The upshot of this is that when I use a pannier that has a loop at the bottom to hold it in place, on the old bike I always have an issue where it catches the fender strut, which touches the rack and gets in the way. The new rack, because of the wider base, has a nice big offset from the fender struts so this isn't an issue. The new rack also has a higher weight capacity, not that that was ever an issue I ran into anyway. The only downside is I had to buy a rear reflector/light to go with it, as it didn't come with one. Not a big deal, as my bike has a bunch anyway in the meantime. I don't mind the silver arms others have mentioned, though I will acknowledge they're the only thinks currently on my bike that aren't straight black. Not a deal breaker for me, but YMMV. ... show more

  • Excellent rack, easy to install. Too small
Color: Standard Size: Disc Style: No Spring
This rack is very well made, but unfortunately the mounting arms are too short to fit on my Trek Verve+ that also has fenders. The rack is so nice that I decided to construct a mounting bracket to allow me to use it. The distance from the center of the lower mounting hole to the bottom of the bracket arms is about 14 1/4". This is the minimum clearance available when installed. You will need a little more distance than this to ensure adequate clearance. See attached photo for one possible solution that gave me the added clearance I needed above the rear fender. I had two screws to secure this piece of metal, one for the fender mount and one that would have been used for this rack, had it been long enough. This ensured a solid installation. I needed an additional set of screws to attach the mounting arms to this metal bracket. The support arms that secure the front of this rack to the frame were used at the maximum extension, just barely long enough to get the job done. My wheels are about 28" in diameter on this bike. ... show more

  • Does not fit 29" wheel bikes without irreversible modification
Color: Standard Size: Disc Style: No Spring
Buyer Beware! Amazon claims "fits all mountain bike frames with disc brakes" and Topeak claims "one fits All Rear Rack." Both are false. Topeak's User Guide says "designed to fit a wide range of bicycles sized from 26" wheel x 14.5" frame to 700C wheel x 63 cm frame." While a reviewer fit this on a 29R mountain bike with disc brakes, it might not fit yours. Do you want to make time-consuming, permanent modifications to even ATTEMPT to fit it? So far, I have found no inexpensive rear racks that fit a 29R. Think about seat or handlebar bags instead. After visiting with technicians at 2 bike shops and a trip to the hardware store, I am returning it. I can't fit it on a Marin Bolinas Ridge 29" bike. FYI, I'm a Mechanical Engineer. Having said all that, I like the overall design and it seems well made. Just the marketing needs to change. The instructions are useful too covering English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, and Chinese. The illustrations are particularly well done. You can also add optional tail lights, Topeak part numbers TC1013, TC1016, TMS017, TMS004. I will attempt to upload most of the User Guide. ... show more
