This is such a charming and sweet game. Each player controls 3 characters and you have to strategize between the characters to maximize the points you win throughout the game. It feels a bit complicated when reading the instructions because of this, but once you get going it's pretty easy to understand and play. I have friends that are always wanting to play games, and normally I'd prefer to do something else, but I still enjoy playing with them. But this game, I'm prompting them to play with me. It's also nice having a game designed just for two people so when you don't have a crowd around, you don't feel like your getting a lesser game experience, like you would with games where you CAN play with 2 people, but it's not as much fun as if you play with all 5 people. ... show more

I am a fan of the original Tokaido - but that is best with 4-5 players This is a 2 player Tokaido 'spin-off' - with the right amount strategy for new gamers and seasoned players (imho) . Multiple paths to success depending on your rolls .

    • Great two player game with a splash of chance to add to the intensity
I enjoyed the large game, but found it a bit too calming for my nature. This version of the two player game is more agressive - but in a nice way. It was easy to grasp after the first play. Also, because of the one on one competitive nature, we wanted to play it a second time. It was fun if you like throwing in some aspects of chance with dice mechanic - which we love, so it was a win win with us. Also, the art is so cute! ... show more

I waited a year for this version to be released in the USA! The game is different than the original Tokiado- reengineered for two players. BGG has extensive reviews including one full play-through. I enjoy the mechanics of controlling three characters with unique ways to score points. Definitely recommend for advanced beginners. ... show more

    • Fun game for two
The number of steps was intimidating at first but the directions are very thorough and once we started playing, it was easy to get into. There are several ways to win which makes it entertaining without being too competitive.

The wife and I were already big fans of Tokaido. This is definitely more fun for 2 players than normal Tokaido.

My partner and I don't get out a lot so we end up only being able to play 2 player games. This board game took a while to learn the rules as I'm more of a novice board game player. But once we played it a couple times, I got the hang of it and it's really fun for two people!

    • Perfect 2-player Tokaido!
I love 4-player tokaido, so I had to try this out. I'm happy to report this one has the same elegance and balance as the larger game does. I played a game of it with my 9-year-old daughter and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. It's simple enough to pick up quickly, but players have meaningful choices to make every round. I love the turn mechanic - there are three different character types for each player. When it's your turn, you roll a die for each character and pick one. Then the other player picks one of the remaining two, and you get the last one. Then player B gets to roll and pick their die first. This means that you're constantly moving your pieces with very little pause for the other player to go. No one has a chance to get bored. Overall, the game feels balanced, serene but a little competitive, and great fun. My daughter said: "Five stars! Let's play it again." ... show more
