  • Effective but Heavy
Size: 4' x 25' (100 sf)
I recently use 1 pound mass loaded vinyl for soundproofing my living room and it is fantastic. It’s significantly cut down noise and it was easy to cut and fit, but we had a hard time putting it up because of the weight. We installed it along with wood panels since my TV wall in the living room is against my bedroom wall, and it made a huge difference in reducing the noise. The quality is excellent, and it feels durable and long lasting. While it might be a bit pricey, the noise reduction benefits, made it worth it. I highly recommended for anyone needing to reduce the noise ... show more

  • Works better than the foam squares or the felt squares
Size: 4' x 10' (40 sf)
Very thick and heavy plastic material. Thank goodness I was able to cut with plain shears. It was a little hard for me putting it up because of the weight, but I attached it to the door with nails, and it worked. I also put a little around the door to the wall and made sure to cover the space at the bottom of the door. I tested it out with a loud TV, and it gave above 90% noise cancellation, and that is better than I can ask for. I would use it again by borrowing a man's muscles to help out. Very good product. It works way better than those felt squares and the so-say noise cancellation foam squares. ... show more

  • Works flawlessly, but make sure what your particular noise control situation requires...
Size: 4' x 10' (40 sf)
4 stars instead of 5 because I wish it were cheaper! First, the odor - the roll I received had little or no headache-inducing vinyl odor. Double thumbs up. Second, the application. My particular situation - I have a drum kit set up in my basement. The concrete foundation is good at blocking noise, but the windows at the top of the foundation, not so much. I don't want to bother the next door neighbors with loud drumming. The solution to this particular problem is to get 3" mineral wool, cut to fit the window opening, then cut a same-size piece of the MLV material and put on top of the mineral wool. The stackup of materials, from the outside in, is glass + mineral wool + MLV. This doesn't block 100% of the sound, but it does a really good job. In this case the MLV is one part of the solution. I put the mineral wool/MLV combo in a heavy duty plastic garbage bag to prevent dust coming off of the mineral wool into the basement space. There is nothing magical about the MLV - it is just a mass layer. Other materials of similar density and rigidity (rubber mat for example) would also work. The MLV advantage is it is very flexible and cuts easily with a razor knife. And you can fasten it or glue it fairly easily to another surface. If you are trying to block sound from an adjoining room or apartment, however, this can get really tricky because the sound can travel through many paths. Even if you completely cover one wall with a sheet of MLV (or an insulation layer such as the mineral wool plus the MLV), this may not effectively block the sound if the sound is also traveling through another path to get into the space you are trying to make quiet. Sort of like the water dripping through your ceiling, sound will go wherever physics permits it to go. There is some reasonably good practical information at this website: soundproofcow.com. This is a commercial website, and I am not endorsing their products, but you can find some good info on approaches to noise control here. If you want to study the physics of it all, get the book "Noise and Vibration Control", edited by Leo Beranek. ... show more

  • Easy to cut and clean with alcohol
Size: 4' x 10' (40 sf)
The tape used to hold the roll closed and to the core is a gooey mess that cleans easily enough with microfiber cloth and alcohol. Weighs exactly as stated, so, not heavy, as many users noted. Dampens the hollow sound of the island cabinetry surrounding my dishwasher. Used several layers with acoustic damping compound and additional plywood layers to create a 'dead' box. Dishwasher only had 38 db sound to begin with. Now I have to put my ear by the handle to know when it is running. ... show more

  • Not a great value for the money
Size: 4' x 25' (100 sf)
This MLV made up a large part of the cost of my attempted sound proofing project. I'm really not sure it made much difference. I covered mulple finished walls with it, and added a 5/8" layer of drywall on top, and it is only marginally better. I guess I wasn't expecting a miracle, but I was hoping for better soundproofing than I got. Not a good value for the money. ... show more

  • Great product.
Size: 4' x 25' (100 sf)
The high weight and density of this product is great, but my UPS guy was not amused! I'm using this along with Dynamat and some thin foam to improve the sound isolation in my B250 conversion van. The 4' width fits perfectly between the rear wheel wells, minimizing the cut-n-piece work, and along with the Dynamat it does a good job of cutting down on the transmission, tire, and exhaust noise coming into the cabin. Nice improvement that makes an old vehicle feel a bit more modern, and for a much lower price than a new vehicle. The roll does have a mild odor during installation, but I didn't notice it after installation, even when the vehicle sits closed up for a few days. ... show more

  • Car door install
Size: 4' x 10' (40 sf)
I used this to install inside my car doors. I first bought the 1/4" MLV since the 1/8" was not in stock thinking it would be ok but good god its thick. I did make it fit, but sacrificed coverage and in the end the door trim kept popping off at the little plastic clips. So, I started over and bought the 1/8" MLV and this stuff fits like a glove! So far I have only done the front doors so I cannot comment entirely on the sound quality it provides. But I will say I am hearing things in music I never knew were there (I know, so cliche). On one song I thought my speakers were acting funny/blown or something was loose in the door, but come to realize it was a part of the song I never noticed before. Scared me to death! (did not want to buy new speakers) I have also heard MLV can leave a foul smell, but so far I cannot smell a thing. Hopefully it stays that way over the long hot summer. If you are considering MLV for a car door, definitely use 1/8" as the 1/4" might be too thick...I found out the hard, expensive way. Having bought both 1/4" and 1/8" from this same company [Trademark Soundproofing] I am pleased with their service. I would buy from them again. (Hopefully not any time soon though! HA HA) ... show more
