  • Works flawlessly, but make sure what your particular noise control situation requires...
Size: 4' x 10' (40 sf)
4 stars instead of 5 because I wish it were cheaper! First, the odor - the roll I received had little or no headache-inducing vinyl odor. Double thumbs up. Second, the application. My particular situation - I have a drum kit set up in my basement. The concrete foundation is good at blocking noise, but the windows at the top of the foundation, not so much. I don't want to bother the next door neighbors with loud drumming. The solution to this particular problem is to get 3" mineral wool, cut to fit the window opening, then cut a same-size piece of the MLV material and put on top of the mineral wool. The stackup of materials, from the outside in, is glass + mineral wool + MLV. This doesn't block 100% of the sound, but it does a really good job. In this case the MLV is one part of the solution. I put the mineral wool/MLV combo in a heavy duty plastic garbage bag to prevent dust coming off of the mineral wool into the basement space. There is nothing magical about the MLV - it is just a mass layer. Other materials of similar density and rigidity (rubber mat for example) would also work. The MLV advantage is it is very flexible and cuts easily with a razor knife. And you can fasten it or glue it fairly easily to another surface. If you are trying to block sound from an adjoining room or apartment, however, this can get really tricky because the sound can travel through many paths. Even if you completely cover one wall with a sheet of MLV (or an insulation layer such as the mineral wool plus the MLV), this may not effectively block the sound if the sound is also traveling through another path to get into the space you are trying to make quiet. Sort of like the water dripping through your ceiling, sound will go wherever physics permits it to go. There is some reasonably good practical information at this website: soundproofcow.com. This is a commercial website, and I am not endorsing their products, but you can find some good info on approaches to noise control here. If you want to study the physics of it all, get the book "Noise and Vibration Control", edited by Leo Beranek. ... show more

  • Works better than the foam squares or the felt squares
Size: 4' x 10' (40 sf)
Very thick and heavy plastic material. Thank goodness I was able to cut with plain shears. It was a little hard for me putting it up because of the weight, but I attached it to the door with nails, and it worked. I also put a little around the door to the wall and made sure to cover the space at the bottom of the door. I tested it out with a loud TV, and it gave above 90% noise cancellation, and that is better than I can ask for. I would use it again by borrowing a man's muscles to help out. Very good product. It works way better than those felt squares and the so-say noise cancellation foam squares. ... show more

  • Did nothing
Size: 4' x 10' (40 sf)
I relied on the review stating the following: "I live in the first floor of a NYC building. Everyone that enters the building passes through my door and that includes the tenants, delivery people, friends and family. The front door also made a lot of noise specially because i’m Right by it. After I installed this on my door it blocked the sound of people walking and talking by my door by 90%, I still can hear the door but it’s so Suttle now that it doesn’t bother me." However, this was not the case with me at all - and apparently I am attracting comments highly defensive know-it-alls since my negative review is the most popular now. This is what happened in my situation: I lived in a building with pipes that are banging endlessly in my wall. My landlord will do nothing, even though it is a extremely loud and irritating. I had to hear hammering noises at 50-60 decibels. The pipes are behind drywall, so that is the first barrier. Then, I carefully cut and nailed this product to the drywall. It did nothing whatsoever, even though I previously called a soundproofing company before ordering this expensive product and spending hours installing it - to ask if this would help (they said it would be moderate but not 0 - and it wasn't even 1 decibel less). All it did was create the need for me to have to get the whole section patched and painted when I took it off a few weeks later. It was so heavy and annoying, I regret buying it completely. 10 years ago I bought mass loaded vinyl for my HVAC and laundry closet, to make it quieter when I was sitting in my living room. That was the adhesive kind. It also did nothing. Anyway, the know-it-all sound experts are now going nuts in the comments below my review - despite the fact they seem to be ignoring all the other negative reviews and not explaining how it magically worked for this guy in his NYC apartment who I relied upon before purchasing. ... show more

  • Good material with no odor and cut properly. No shipping issues.
Size: 4' x 10' (40 sf)
Not much to say, it is odor free, heavy like it should be, and the material was clean and cut well. No shipping problems or damage. As all MLV, super easy to cut and work with. This particular blend according to datasheet has pretty good absorption across a wide frequency range of sound. I used mine to put barrier in all four car doors and hatch, and then half the floor area of the car. Noise was noticeably reduced. While this isn't an insulator, every car I have treated the doors in seems to keep temperatures better in cold or hot, possibly due to a very slight insulation value, and due to the later of unbroken surface with few holes. This brand is not the cheapest price out there for a good product that you know will not stink, etc. but with free shipping on Amazon it works to be the same or slightly better than the nearest alternative I know of. ... show more
