  • Don't use straps or for some SUPs
Decent value for the money, but the straps are almost worthless - do NOT use them. Buy something better / longer. Also, I've read about using these j bars for SUP's. I tried and would NOT recommend for long trips, or for less rigid or long (+10 ft) SUPs. We lost ours on a 6 hr drive to the beach. Luckily no one was behind us. The SUPs just don't fit snug for long trips like kayaks. Short slow journeys should be fine, but we lost ours when it decided to become at kite at 65 mph. Also, we ordered two sets as we were not sure if we would get enough for our kayak and our SUP, and instead of getting either 2 or 4, we got 3... whoever is doing fulfillment doesn't understand this products details. We shipped the half order back and kept two, but will only use for kayaks or short hops with SUPs to the local lake. Also, the bolts to attach the j bar brackets to your existing luggage rack are less than ideal and can come loose easily on long trips. Recheck these after an hour or so on the first use, and bring the tools needed to adjust hardware as this loses a star for requiring wrenches where knobs should have been enough...but hey the price is right. We also had to cut the bolts to get this to fit on our 08 Sequoia (2nd gen body). ... show more

  • Some DIY improvements can be made but still just ok
I bought this with CargoLoc 52” bars (also here on amazon). They don’t mate very well, so I added one significant improvement - I used some Renfrew hockey tape I had lying around to increase the contact and friction between the cross bars and the J rack. HUGE improvement. Most of the complaints here are valid. It’s somewhat of a bear to get these assembled, especially if you don’t have proper tools. They’re sturdy enough, although I wish the tubing was a bit of a thicker gauge. The bolts for the tightening knobs are long on purpose. In order to keep the knobs from loosening they added a washer/nut combo which adds friction...but also is a bear to tighten. I used a small amount of superglue to keep the nut and washer and knob all together. Small is the ticket - don’t glue your mounting hardware to the rack! ... show more

  • Good value and easy to assemble/install
Was sceptical after reading the reviews however for the price I gave it a shot. I used an adjustable wrench to tighten the nuts, instructions were clear enough and assembly was pretty straight forward and simple. Time was about 30 minutes to assemble and install on my wife's 2018 Subaru Forester which now looks RAD. Sturdy enough and works as advertised, The straps were not large enough for my Sundolphin Excursion 12 ss so I purchased others that fit better not a problem. Holds my kayak with no problem for good distance at speeds of 70 +/_. DO keep your adjustable wrench in your vehicle and give these a once over after a use or two, Always check to make sure they are good and snug. I had no problem but would rather be safe than sorry. I would not hesitate to buy these again. ... show more

  • GMC SUV warning/ informative product review
Ease of assembly and install are about equal in rating. Im going to say the entire process assembly/install took me a little over an hour. I made a few errors while doing it. Its not simple. Its not 1,2,3. Its more like, "damn, oops, ok i got it this time." GMC WARNING: The crossbars (that's what you will attach these racks to) on my GMC are flexible and slightly curved. These kayak racks WILL FIT on those type of GMC crossbars BUT they will not attach/sit up perfectly straight. That didn't seem to cause any issues for me AT ALL while carrying the kayaks. Only an eye sore to my perfectionist girlfriend. There is room for you to tighten the front more than the back if you want to try to level them out the best you can. OK here's my warning: DO NOT go on the highway if your crossbars are curved and flexible. It is ok to travel around town at slower speeds, but with wind factor + speed of vehicle you will soon realize the kayaks act as sails on top of your car, which means they are catching ALOT of wind. Those crossbars on the GMC are flexible as I said. This flex allows for some serious movement up there when you get moving. If you are travelling fast, that motion begins to gain momentum and before you know it, you'll snap those bad boys right off. Ever seen your kayak doing flips in your rear view mirror? The flexible GMC crossbars just aren't rated for that kind of stress. I used to load a kayak directly on top of them and strap it down. NO problem for years. but when you have them sitting up like this, its a new game. STAY OFF HIGHWAYS. I could get up to about 55 mph if I was driving WITH the wind, but driving into any wind, or a crosswind? i couldnt get over 40/45 without common sense telling me to chill out. YOU NEED a solid crossbar(s). My solution was to purchase a set of more solid/firm/non flexible crossbars. That's my GMC warning. Swap out your crossbars or keep it local and under 50 mph. Don't do what I did. This product, it doesn't cost much. That's why you're here. right? Well, its a great value. It really is. I can vouch for that. BUT those straps it comes with are super cheap. I let my girlfriend strap a side and she inserted the strap backwards which caused for the strap to loosen while we were driving, instead of hold tight. At first I did not understand why the strap was loosening like that. I had to really think about it lol. What I do now is, (this is going to sound confusing until you have this rack on your hood) After threading the strap thru the rack, I am left with two equal ends. one with a buckle, one without. I brought both sides of the strap up over the kayak and then I ran the BUCKLE end (very important) under the loop of the rack and pulled it back up toward the sky. Then I insert the other side of the strap thru the buckle so that when I pull UP on the strap, the buckle keeps tightening. (sound confusing? That's my fault. You'll see, it's not that bad after you do it once or twice) If you run your straps like that, and it still loosens, that means you probably have the buckle facing the wrong way as it has a slanted bite to it. Very cheap. I did not like this at first but having figured it out now, its fine. My advice: if you feel uncomfortable with them, like I did, throw them away and purchase ratchet straps for the extra confidence. No one likes driving and freaking out at the same time right? I am not saying these straps don't work, because they do work. So take a good look at the picture they show you in the directions and try to use what I'm saying to help you figure it out.. or go buy some ratchet straps. You will want the bottom of your crossbars to have 3 or 4 fingers of space between that and your roof. I say this because with each rack, there is one bolt larger than the rest. (main bolt) That bolt may be too long and it wont allow space for you to add the 2 nuts, which tighten, then secure the bolt. (they are larger than usual) I had to get creative and put the nut on my roof by itself and then twist the bolt at first to get a bite on the nut. Kind of tricky when your standing on a tire. Yeah I think that's all I wanted to say. I didn't see anything about this in any reviews so i thought id mention it. My final take: They're great! You just need the proper crossbars, clearance and maybe get some ratchet straps if you don't trust those straps that it comes with it! Happy Yaking Fellas! ... show more

  • You will get arthritis assembling these
First of all the parts dont fit together nicely, I had to use a hammer to get the center bolts through the bars and plastic and then it was very difficult to get the bolts to seat properly because the holes are recessed, I had to put a nut on top of the bolt and strike it very hard with a hammer to get them to seat and a few of them took several attempts and wasted a lot of time. Another big time sink with these is the packaging of the nuts and bolts, I'm pretty sure this was developed by a masochist...even with scissors or a razor knife prepare to waste up to a half an hour getting the hardware out of the plastic and then removing the excess plastic that sticks to them after you remove them. Also I have found that the knobs used to secure them to the roof rails come loose after time, I used zip ties around them to keep them from coming loose any more and may even drill a lock pin through them instead of the zip ties...something that was never considered by the mfg. All of that being said they look great and are pretty sturdy and the price was right. ... show more
