  • Suitable as a sand spreader! Well made despite a couple potential weak points, overall a thumbs up!
We have a pretty long (about 500') dirt/gravel driveway here in the northeast and it gets quite icy during the winter. I picked up this broadcast spreader to facilitate spreading sand and it works great. Firstly, many reviews complain about the assembly process. I am a mechanically inclined individual, mostly building and repairing cars so I'm used to referencing shop guides and service manuals (which are often unclear), and did not find the assembly process to be very arduous. The instruction manual has only a few "steps", each of which cover a pretty substantial amount of assembly. However these steps are clearly worded in my opinion (albeit, a bit wordy in places) and if I'm being honest, it goes together as one would expect it to. Remember, that thing between your ears is helpful and should be used regularly during assembly! All the hardware is 10mm (except for one 8mm nut/bolt, I think). A ratcheting wrench paired with a combination wrench make tightening all the hardware a breeze. When using this as a sander, it is important to use very fine sand in order to avoid small stones jamming the open/close mechanism which allows the media the fall onto the distributor plate. For this reason, I have not tried using rock salt as I fear the grains would impede the closing function. The hopper and distributor plate are plastic so I wouldn't be concerned about salt damaging these components. I adjusted the wingnut stopper on the open/close lever to severely limit the maximum opening capacity. My first use of the spreader I went "fully open" and used about 40 pounds of sand in about 40 feet. The wingnut stopper is extremely useful because you want to be able to yank on that lever as soon as you're ready (i.e., at the desired walking speed), and the wingnut stopper allows you to do just that without releasing an abundance of material or attempting to open it "just enough" which is tricky while also pushing and attempting to monitor how much media is being released. I believe the primary weak point in this machine will be the rod that connects the open/close lever to the mechanism below the hopper. This steel bar is quite small, around 1/4" and easily bends if anything (e.g., a small rock) is stuck in the gates at the bottom of the hopper. Therefore it is important not to attempt to force the machine closed, and instead resolve the jam so that the lever actuates with ease, as it should. Another potential weak point is the pivot/swing arm assembly between the aforementioned rod and hopper, which uses a loose fit rivet fastener to allow for the pivoting action. This assembly has more play than it did "out of the box"t after a single use, so I expect to eventually replace either the fastener with a nut/bolt/washer combo or the pivot/swing arm assembly itself with something more robust. Overall I'm very happy with the purchase and hope to get many years of service from this machine. I will update this review should the machine experience any sort of premature failure. ... show more

  • Quality spreader for a decent price
I purchased this spreader after the gear box in my old Scotts spreader finally broke and it was said to be an equivalent to a 2150 commercial 50lb spreader that costs almost twice as much as the Titan. I was able to assemble it without issues, but I agree with other reviewers that the assy. illustrations in the manual need to be larger and clearer. After reading that others were having assembly issues, I prepared myself by watching a Youtube vid of the assembly... it was big help! I put 50lb of fertilizer in the hopper and walked across the lawn without spreading any fert to see how well the Titan pushes... it is hands down a far, far better spreader with 50lbs than my old Scotts that would only take approx 20-30lbs. I wish I had got this sooner! I will spend some time trying to adjust the flow setting that works with my slower walk gate in a few weeks when I drop the winter blend. The solid linkage between the metering handle and the three hole hopper gate takes this spreader up into features that pro units have. The heavy duty plastic hopper strainer and cover are included extras that must be purchased separately with some of the other brands of spreaders. The pneumatic tires will be much better for dropping weed killer in a moist lawn. The hard, skinny plastic tires on my old Scotts spreader would sometimes slide on the damp grass leaving areas void of fertilizer/weed killer. I fully expect that spreading hundreds of pounds of lime next spring will be so much less of a hassle than it was last time with my tiny Scotts spreader. If you have been frustrated with the cheap, budget friendly spreaders, then get yourself this Titan! ... show more

  • How accurate?
I bought this spreader because I need one that can take a good volume of product and can work well on a very uneven land space. I finally got this together after watching a customer posted video several times, Especially the drop adjustment apparatus. However now that I’m stuck with it, I see that the drop adjustment allows too much play in the amount it lets through that I feel it will either use too much or not enough. I feel more confident with my Scott’s edge guard, but it’s small and doesn’t handle the terrain. If I buy another one, it will be a different brand and it will be better quality. ... show more
