  • Good Vac- Get the plus version
My old vacuum is a Miele Canister vacuum with a powerhead. I picked up the Tineco Pure S12 thinking it could be used for quick clean-ups and I would keep the Miele for Sunday chores. I'm pretty sure I no longer need the Miele. The Tineco is that good! Here's a quick rundown: The Good: 1. No cord. It may not seem like a big thing, but it turns out, I like not having a cord to trip over. 2. The dirt sensor works, it works well, and it is important to the operation of this machine! This thing optimizes power applied to suction depending on how dirty the floor is. This is an important feature because it enables the batteries to last a long time. 3. The dirt sensor display is awesome. I've never had a vacuum cleaner tell me "nope- you're not done yet. Keep cleaning that spot." But that's what this sensor does. It's very useful. Now I know that I wasn't getting all the dirt up with my old vacuum because I was going too fast. With this vacuum on auto and watching the dirt sensor, I know I need to sloooooow down, watch the dirt sensor, go back, keep at it, and then finally when all the dirt has come up, I can move on. 4. Filters, not filter bags. This vacuum has two filters. The preliminary filter may be cleaned and re-used. It may be cleaned with water or given a quick cleaning using a special tool that is included. The HEPA filter is the exhaust filter and it does a very good job of keeping dust from re-entering the room. 5. It is super powerful. I mean it really is. 6. It's light, well balanced and very well made. 7. The plus version comes with a flexible hose, mine didn't. I don't miss not having the flexible hose. The vacuum is very light and there are plenty of attachments included. The Not So Good 1. The vacuum does not stand on its own. You will find yourself leaning it up in a corner when the phone rings. 2. The dirt canister is small. You will have to run and empty it frequently. It's not difficult, but it will be more frequent than changing a traditional vacuum cleaner bag. Also, you can't use this vacuum like a shop vac. My Miele canister vac could slurp up bird food spilled on the floor. This one doesn't do that. It has suction power, but the canister is small and there isn't a good floor attachment for this kind of workload. 3. Cleaning the filters is a messy business. If you use the pre-filter cleaning tool, I recommend doing so outside and not having a cleaning filter installed. It does work well, and it is automatic. It will eat up some of your battery. You've got two batteries, you'll be fine! 4. If you have floors that are not covered in carpet, you will wind up buying the carpet powerhead for another hundred bucks. The general purpose powerhead sits very low to the ground and has no means of adjusting the height. If you spill cereal on the floor, the general-purpose head won't work well. The one meant for bare floors has a high entry on the front and works much better. For this reason, I'd suggest just going with the Plus version if you can. Note that Tineco gives a 10% veterans discount when purchasing direct. 5. PEEVE: The general purpose power head keeps a bit of dust or gravel in the brush barrel. When the vacuum is turned off, and the vacuum picked up off the floor, a bit of dirt frequently falls out of the vacuum and back on the floor. This is particularly noticeable on bare floors. This means that I then need to go back with a brush attachment and clean up. The problem can be mitigated by lifting the vacuum from the floor while it is still running- let it run for a moment, and then turn it off. This seems to allow the retained dirt to be sucked up into the vacuum. Design things that may not be apparent: This vacuum comes with a lot of attachments. The plus version comes with even more. The wall hanging storage unit has space to store only the attachments that have bristles. The other attachments will need to find a home somewhere else in your home. If you have a carpet that is full of dust, when you first run this vacuum over it, you might think the machine is broken. Here's what happened to me- I have an entryway area rug. With my old vacuum, I'd run the vacuum over it until it looked clean and then move on. But the Tineco sees the dirt coming up in the rug and turns the powerhead to the max, and the suction up to max. If you just keep moving the vacuum across the rug in sweeping motions, the motor in the powerhead will stall. You release the trigger and start again- stall. What's going on is that the suction at maximum is so great that the powerhead clamps down to the floor and the brush motor can't turn the brush in the power head. All you need to do is watch the dirt sensor- when it ramps up and vacuum suction increases, slow down. Don't move the vacuum. Let it do its job. Keep an eye on the canister and filter indicators. You are pulling up a lot of dirt! Everything in this vacuum is user cleanable. It all comes apart nicely and comes back together easily. Read the instructions. If you don't read the instructions, you are not going to have a good time. The display on this vacuum is important. The small canister and it's cleanable filters need to be monitored or you'll find yourself wondering why the vacuum worked well yesterday but isn't working well today. The vacuum tells you what needs to be done. Cleaning the filters isn't hard, but you do need to do it frequently until your house catches up with the standard of dust-free operation that this vacuum enables. You will need to install the vacuum holder on a wall near a power outlet. If you do not have a closet with a power outlet, you may need to get creative. Mine lives behind a pinball machine. Ok, I've rambled on a bit here. I hope this is helpful. It is a very well-designed machine and I'm pretty sure it will become our primary cleaning machine inside the house! ... show more

  • This is a really tough product to rate...but here goes
See my update(s) below... We've been looking for a replacement for our Dyson V8 Animal which is still working but has some annoying deficiencies. After some serious research, we finally chose this Tineco and were really excited to put it through the paces. Wow! This vacuum is a really mixed bag of features. It's without a doubt the most tech-oriented vacuum we've seen to date. It supposedly has a "dust sensor" that instructs the motor to run at the most efficient speed at all times, and yes, as you move from one surface to another, it does speed up and slow down. Our biggest concern is whether it's really sucking up as much as it could, especially when vacuuming rugs and carpet. Who's going to get down on their hands and knees to inspect those? Anyway, here are some pros and cons: Pros: - Considerably quieter than some other brands, even at high power - Display constantly shows remaining battery level in percent, and suction power level. You won't get surprised by the sudden shutdown of the unit - Easily changeable battery. Comes with two. - Long run time when used on auto suction (about 50 min.) Only about 10 minutes on max power - Wall mount can charge battery in the power head and second battery at same time - Very maneuverable. Wheels on power roller are nice - Comes with nice selection of useful attachments - Has an accompanying phone/tablet app, although I can't figure out how it's really very useful. Perhaps someone else might think it's cool - Uses two filters including HEPA Cons: - Uses two filters, one of which is inside dirt collection container - Silly small dirt container. If you have animals that shed, it needs to be emptied about every 10 minutes! - Dirt container can be difficult to empty without having to reach in to pull out hair, etc. This is due to the aforementioned "pre-filter" located in the container. Dirt/hair gets caught in upper body and can't fall out when emptied - Emptying dirt container is awkward with long sweeper tube attached - User guide suggests pre-filter be cleaned after every use, but there's an attachment that is used for the chore. Still a bit of a pain - User guide warns not to introduce even the smallest amount of water (accidentally or otherwise) into the unit as it could damage the dust "sensor" or the power head - Fairly long battery charge times (3-4 hours). Our Dyson would fully charge in about an hour (although run times were about half of the Tineco) Overall, it seems like a reasonably good design, and competent enough in its functionality. I think the Tineco engineers would have been much better off concentrating on design, efficiency, and ease of use over the somewhat gimmicky technology. Give me a nice big dirt container that's easy (and at least somewhat sanitary) to empty, and great suction over a digital display any day. UPDATE: 10/25/20 ---------------------- Ok. I've had some real time to use this vacuum, and I'm going to have to lower my rating from 4 to 3 stars. Here's why: The dust/dirt container is next to unusable, in my opinion. It's not only silly small, but unless you empty it at the first sign that there's much of anything in it, you'll be faced with a really dirty mess to deal with. As one would expect, dirt and dust collect throughout the inside of the container. The problem then becomes how to get everything out of it (especially hair) because the "pre-filter" has a rubberized flange on the bottom where hair, and anything in the hair, cannot possibly just fall out of the bottom. I thought once I removed the canister from the power head I'd be able to empty it from the top. No go! The top is sealed up as best I can tell. That means if you have a really full container, you're going to have to use your hand to reach in and pull the gunk out. Yuk. I don't know about you, but I think it's asking a lot for a product's design to make it necessary to wear disposable gloves while I'm vacuuming the house. But that's what I have to do unless I want to empty the container a dozen or more times while I'm vacuuming. Maybe if you didn't have any animals in the house, as we do, it wouldn't be quite as bad. Also, I thought that, like my previous cordless, I'd be able to just drop the power head down to the floor to slide it under beds and other raised furniture. Huh-uh. The wheels at the back of the sweeper head and the angle of the connecting tube make it a clumsy ordeal. You actually can get it under furniture, but the power head and extension tube have to be rotated in one direction or another to allow the angled part of the tube on the sweeper head to get out of the way. (kind of hard to explain) Then one has to try to maneuver it under the furniture while keeping it at the funky angle. It just makes the whole operation a pain. Check back again for more updates. I'm sure I'll have some. UPDATE: 11/27/20 ---------------------- Just spent a good bit of time cleaning up after Thanksgiving. I really WANT to like this vacuum. It sure wasn't cheap and buyer's remorse is a real bummer. That said, I still think it has some real, honest-to-goodness design flaws. I still absolutely hate the dust/dirt bin. I don't use the vacuum now without a pair of disposable vinyl gloves on. Emptying the dust bin when it is even a little fuller than "Max" is just gross, and the dust bin is so small that it's incomprehensible, so you'll be doing a lot of dumping unless your house doesn't really need cleaning anyway. No matter how you approach the job, you're going to have to touch something that has no business being touched because it's unsanitary. And if you have animals (we have three cats), their hair is just going to be an ongoing problem. The dust bin just doesn't want to let it go by simply popping open the door and gently tapping the vacuum on the garbage can. I've had to reach in every time to try to remove all of the pet hair. And, if your animals shed like ours, you're going to be emptying the bin about every 10 minutes or less. If you want an example of a great dust bin design, look at the Dyson V8 Animal cordless. When you're ready to dump, you hold the vac with one hand, then use your other hand to pull up on a lever that forces the contents out the bottom. Then push the assembly back down, use a finger to close the bottom door, and your back to vacuuming. Only on a very few occasions have I had to touch anything that was sucked up in the Dyson. That said, the Tineco has some really nice advantages over the Dyson, so I'm not a big Dyson fan either. But I feel absolutely certain that the Tineco engineers should be able to come up with a much, much better dust bin design as well as making it usefully larger. Until then, however, my overall opinion is that it's still not what it should be for the price. Keep shopping... ... show more
