  • What's not to like?
Style: 4 Bike
For years and years, I've used a roof rack and bike trays to carry my bikes. They've served me well and never once gave any problems. When I recently bought a Subaru Forrester, it became a pain in the butt to lift and fasten my bikes to the much higher roof than a regular car. So, I had a trailer hitch installed and bought the Thule Apex XT 4 bike carrier. The Thule is built like a tank and is almost as heavy as one! There is no doubt in my mind that it won't last forever. However, when test-fitting a bike, I could not, for the life of me, open the straps to remove the bike. After about an hour, I finally got the straps released and removed the bike. I thought to myself, "if it's going to be this hard, why not just continue using the roof system." The genius who came up with the instructions should be immediately terminated. Diagrams are sometimes helpful but some written hints and tips would have saved me (and others) from frustration and achy fingers. After about 30 minutes of searching for alternative ways to strap in the bikes, I discovered that the ratcheting mechanism needs to be CLICKED into the bike mounts. Kudos to all who figured this out from the supplied instructions! Once these pieces are clicked into place, the straps release as they should and I breathed a sigh of relief. For those who still have the instructions, look at 6C. You will see the word "click," but what does that mean? A short sentence would have clarified that. Everything else was pretty much self-explanatory and easy to accomplish. There's just one more con that everyone should be aware of: please, please, please do not entrust your valuable bikes with the supplied cable lock. A determined thief can get through that thin cable in a matter of seconds. In reality, there's no lock available that can stop a thief intent on stealing a bike, or anything else, if they want it bad enough. So, I really do love this rack despite the two cons mentioned above. I wanted to give a 5-star rating but deducted one due to the lack of adequate instructions and the rather worthless cable lock. If you're on the fence about buying a bike rack, I'd put Thule #1 on your shortlist. The positives far outweigh any negatives. ... show more

  • Great Customer Support
Style: 5 Bike
Bought the 5 bike version in 2019 and it has served well carrying 5 bikes (2 adult and 3 kid) on several 6+ hour trips across major highways. I've always found the rack easy to use and very sturdy. Last time I installed it the plastic knob broke upon tightening. Contacted Thule and they quickly resolved the issue by shipping me a new rack. I was shocked how quickly and simply they resolved my issue and stood behind their product. ... show more

  • Great thule
Style: 5 Bike
Very pleased with this. It says it's for 5 bikes, we only have 4 bikes to fit on it now, when our daughter starts riding it will definitely be tight for the 5th bike. Although we have mountain bikes and it may fit better with thin street bikes... Otherwise it's ease of use is great. Easy to manipulate up and down and not super high so I can get bikes on and off without much strain. ... show more

  • Some Assembly Required
Style: 2 Bike
If you have some mechanical skills, this product may be for you. I have been transporting bikes on motor vehicles for decades and have had lots of racks. Most of the racks I have used in the past took about 5 minutes to get ready to use. I was very surprised at how much assembly was not done at the Thule factory. For example, lock cylinders are packed loose and the user has to use a special tool (supplied) to insert them in receptacle holes on the rack. Thule instructions were very poor and it took two calls to very well prepared and helpful tech support personnel to get things together. Two bolts have to be turned with an allen wrench into holes with either a poor grade of metal or poor thread machining. Tech support suggested lubricating the bolt and using a bigger tool (more leverage) than supplied. Luckily I have allen sockets and a variety of ratchet handles and things went well. But, it would be good if the buyer has a good set of their own tools and is handy with mechanical challenges. ... show more

  • Toyota Highlander Owners Read this Review
Style: Swing 4 Bike
I think I'm one of the few reviewers to have actually purchased this product. This thing is really sturdy. Initial assembly, which only has to be done once, was a little hard because of the tight clearances on the product - if the tolerances were loose it would rattle - but it doesn't. It was also hard because the instructions are all drawings/graphics and have almost no words. I found a video on the web and it helped a lot. I tried to post the link to the video but that is against Amazon rules. You will probably find the same video if you search - and be sure to read the comments attached to the video because it explains how to install and use the keys (which stumped me for a while). It would have been nice if Thule produced a video and put it on the web - but I couldn't find one. The rack is heavy and well built. Assembly is a 2-person job for non-mechanical people. Thule provides the assembly tools and they were OK, not great, but OK. If you have a 19mm box wrench and a 19mm socket it will be easier. Toyota Highlander Owners with the "genuine" Toyota hitch... you need to buy extra parts to get this rack to mount with the vehicle because the locking pin hole in the Toyota hitch receiver is too close to the aft face of the receiver. This product requires that the hole be at least 1.5 to 2 inches forward of the aft face of the receiver. To solve this problem you need to buy a hitch extension and related components to get it all to work together. Here are the parts, all available on Amazon, that you will need... This will add around $125 to the overall cost. If you closely watch all of the review videos out there that "show off" this rack on Highlanders you will see that none of the Highlanders are outfitted with the genuine OEM Toyota hitch - they all use aftermarket hitches. Here are the parts that are needed to make the rack work with the genuine OEM Toyota hitch on Highlanders: Amazon Part 1 (Amazon Number B077SHGWZM) HiTow Trailer Hitch Tightener Anti-Rattle Stabilizer 2" & 1.25" Hitch, Rubber-Coated No Rattle Noise, Corrosion Resistant. Amazon Part 2 (Amazon Number B07PQ6D8G6) TowWorks Keyed Alike 5/8" Trailer Hitch Locking Pin Set - Receiver Lock with Anti-Rattle, fits Class III - V Hitches with 2" and 2.5" Receivers, 79632 (I got the two lock set - you only need one - getting just one will save you a few dollars) Amazon Part 3 (Amazon Number B007448NC2) FHK45054 Receiver Hitch Extension with 4" Drop/Rise, Black (I bought the FHK45054 but I think the FHK45058 would work better - Meyer FHK45058 Receiver Hitch Extension with 2" Drop/Rise, Black - it is Amazon Part B008R572HO). Line up the middle hole in the extension with the hole in the hitch receiver. You need the Tightener Anti-Rattle Stabilizer to keep the extension from rattling in the receiver. Once it is all together it works great. We knew, in advance of buying the rack, that we would need the additional parts. Because this purchase is a lot of money we downloaded the Thule instructions for the rack before making the purchase decision, and we discovered that it wouldn't work with the Toyota OEM hitch - so we knew what we were getting in to and hopefully you will too. So this rack is rock solid and well built but some of the features (like the keys and locks) I think are not as robust as I would have liked. I think it will last and do what I want it to do for our family bicycling adventures. The unit is expensive, and you need space to store it when it's not mounted on the vehicle, but so far so good! ... show more
