  • Longtime Thermarest owner needing a larger one for “glamping”. See pros & cons below.
Size: X-Large - 30 x 77 Inches Style: WingLock Valve
Pic from left to right: Standard Thermarest - Thermarest XL Basecamp - Invoker 3” model Longtime Thermarest owner for hard camping. Now that I “glamp” more than camp, I wanted “toppers” for the RV bed cushions in my Class B Xplorer motor home. The idea was to have an adjustable firmness topper that would store easily. I intend to store them deflated under the existing cushions. I have a full 77” length in the rear of my wide body Class B. Set up as twin beds in rear, right and left, 30” W each bed with 24” aisle between. Just my setup. I also like the idea of having my old standard Thermarest in case someone wants to sleep on the floor. The Thermarest XL fit the space perfectly. My old “standard” a bit too small. This comparison is between the Thermarest XL Basecamp and the Invoker 3” model. Both are longer and a bit wider than my “standard” Thermarest I have owned for years. I bought both the Thermarest XL & a 3” Invoker for this comparison & review. Pros & Cons: The INVOKER is 1” thicker and has a softer surface. It is more comfortable and less likely my hip bone will touch bottom side laying, if I let air out to make softer. Not really an issue in my use since they will be over other very firm cushions. The 3” Invoker is a little less than 28” wide, 2” shorter than the Thermarest XL, but love the comfort of the extra inch thick over the Thermarest. But the Thermorest XL is wider so fits better in my space. The Invoker softer surface will likely hold a fitted camp sheet a little better than the slipperier Thermarest. Naturally the thicker Invoker does not roll up as small in diameter as the thinner Thermarest. But the Thermarest XL is longer. My Thermo standard size is perfect for camping and on a pack since it’s smaller. Both inflate on their own easily in 5-10 minutes. Both have good 2 way air valves. Both you can blow inflate if you wish to make them firmer. IMHO Thermarest valve is better positioned off the surface so not to be in the way of rolling up. The Invoker valve is perfectly ok positioned on the surface but deep in the corner. However the Thermarest valve is better engineered, positioned & seems more durable. The the only reason I’m not going 5 stars is it’s just not quite thick enough w/o blowing it up a little, and that makes it too firm for me. (I’m such a whiner). I wish there was 4 1/2 star pick. Overall you won’t be disappointed with the Thermarest XL. I intended to pick the best and return the other, but I’m keeping both! ... show more

  • Problem with first one, got a replacement and it is AAA+++ in quality, comfort, and ease of use
Size: X-Large - 30 x 77 Inches Style: WingLock Valve
The first one I ordered came right out of the box had a large and a small brown stain on the top, and a little dirt on one side. We had to postpone our camp out. However, the seller was very prompt in exchanging it. I still have to send the old one back which is a hassle though. They can’t resell it so I’m surprised they’re going to the expense of having it sent back, but I guess that’s their business. Was surprised at the lack of quality control and the fact that they sent such a disgustingly used mat. I’ve relied on Thermarest products for a couple decades. The quality is top notch and I am confident this will last many years. I tried to skimp by buying an inflatable unknown brand for $60, and it went flat after lying on it for 10 minutes after inflating for the first time. I know better but I was trying to save money, but now I have to return that one as well. My hubby is a big guy at 6’4” and 270 lbs. He found this mat (the larger size, we bought both) to be comfortable, even for side sleeping. Even though it is a mere 2 inches thick, there is no bottoming out when he lays on his side! It is self-inflating. We set it out for a couple hours and then filled it with a few more breaths and voila, it was ready for our camp out. We intend to store it upright, with the valve open, as is usually recommended. We have not tried to get it back into the bag, so I can’t speak to that. ... show more

  • Good pad so far
Size: Regular - 20 x 72 Inches Style: WingLock Valve
We've used this pad twice for camping now. Unfortunately, the person who has been using it is my 7 year old son and he doesn't have opinions about things like this :) So, to me, the adult who set it up, it seems like a good pad. It inflates bigger than the other ones we have, and is easy to inflate and deflate. My kid seems comfortable on it, so I'm happy :D ... show more

  • Will it hold up to Colorado winter camping
Product came earlier than expected. I will be useing this over Thanksgiving weekend while camping in Colorado Mountains. I will write a review as to how comfortable it is to sleep on or how cool or cold it gets with a ground barrier beneath. BACK FROM COLO MT. It held up well with a ground deflection barrier underneath. No rips no leaks! The pad was a little cool on the areas about a hands width away from where my body/sleeping bag was on the mat. I found that 3 things probably led to this issue : 1) Temp outside the tent was -16F 2) Temp in the tent was a balmy 35F 3) Looking over @ my girlfriend's mat next to me during the night (we didn't have the fancy join together sleeping bags or 2 person sleeping bag) I could see a portion of the mat was raised off the ground barrier when she was laying on her side, which exposed the mat to more air surface when not touching the ground barrier ; half inch. We were warm otherwise but concluded the lift of the mat was due to possibly to much air in the mats for our weight. I'm '5-9" 175/180 lbs. She is '5-0" 110/115. Camping in about 9"-12" of snow and waking to another 9"-12" over night was a beautiful serene time even though the Jeep got temporarily stuck in the snow. Yes this was an extreme trip, but we were prepared and we are comfortable on these mats still enjoying the outdoors together. ... show more

  • Sleep comfortable without by the worry
Size: Regular - 20 x 72 Inches Style: WingLock Valve
I use this pad winter camping and short backpacking trips. It’s robust so I don’t feel as if I have to baby the pad. I have yet to feel cold coming from under the pad, and it’s really comfortable. Only down side is the weight which isn’t bad but not great, and the fact that it rolls up like a yoga mat so I keep it strapped to the outside of my backpack since it takes up a fair bit of space. ... show more
