Description

The Wolves is a pack-building strategy game for 2-5 players. It’s survival of the fittest as you compete to build the largest, most dominant pack by claiming territory, recruiting lone wolves, and hunting prey. But be careful not to expand too recklessly into terrain where your rivals thrive– they may lure members of your pack away! A clever action-selection mechanism drives your choices. Each action requires you to flip terrain tiles matching the terrain where you wish to take your action. These double-sided tiles mean the actions you take this round will set up which terrain types you can act on in the next round. As you take actions to expand your pack’s control of each region, you will also upgrade your pack’s attributes, allowing you to take more aggressive actions as the game goes on. The Wolves is a highly interactive and deeply thematic strategy game that will have players coming back to the pack again and again

  • Great game
Great game.

  • Nice game
This is a good game. Played it with my family of 4, my 6 year old teamed up with my wife for about an hour then lost interest. Played this with my 10 year old as well. The concept of this game, it is a territory control game with some interesting elements. We play a lot of board games in our house, lots, my 10 year old has a great strategy for his age and understands concepts and remembers rules better then me often. This game has 3 phases of control, well at least for 3 play game. The concept is you flip over the cards you have over your player board, when doing so it allows you to do certain things. The name of the game is to dominate territory and collect victory points to win before the end of moon cycles. The meeples are great, nice shape and color. really like the look and feel, they are wood. The player boards are great art and love the colors for each of the wolves. Each wolf will has a extra territory card of its own type. There is 1 action that is a dominance that takes 3 of one card type. So it can pay out. You also can consume animals scattered through out the board, the animals give you points. There are ways to convert opponents wolves to your color, there are way to capture dens. The Alpha wolf is not able to be captured nor a lair the evolved form of the den. You earn victory points, you can also earn 1 use territory wild cards, and extra action tokens. These can be valuable to stack moves or dominate your opponents wolves. The board is great and the layout is a bit unique with the normal hex style layout but the boards are like a cluster of them. Each time you take den, wolf, or other actions they move over to the moon board, when you hit each moon phase you the point out for the tiles that are in the land area that holds the matching moon phase tokens. The direction are laid out pretty well, we had a little confusion on whether you flip the cards to what you need or you flip the cards to show the tiles you need, the answer was clear in the book, we watched a video and it had a few rules wrong which caused confusion. The directions are pretty straight forward and this was a over all fun game. Not sure how much I will actually play it, but it will definitely come out a couple more times. The game took quite a bit to set up and understand, so reading through the rules took about an hour+, but that is with kids asking questions before I had answers. I would say first time play through plan a solid 2-3 hours. I think this game has a lot of potential and would be of good value to put on any shelf. For my house not quite there for us, due to 1 is 6 and not quite old enough my 10 year old enjoyed it. My wife does not like games with to many directions, this got to be a bit much for her, as you need to not just plan for the current phase, but also need to be planning the other phases coming up. You are able to get more VP each phase has greater value, but also more limited resources. Good game overall would recommend. ... show more

  • Pretty Good Game
This one took us by surprise. At first it looked like a Cascadia knock off, but it actually is a pretty unique game with some interesting mechanics. The rule book is very well done and the game is pretty easy to learn. The components are excellent. There are some issues with colors that may be an issue if you are colorblind. The terrain for the grasslands and desert look alike. The meeples that are gray and green and blue and pink are a bit too close together. So if you are colorblind beware. However, other than color issues, the components are great. The game has a unique mechanic where the actions depend on your use of terrain tiles. One, two, or three of the same terrain will determine what moves you can make. Also, when you do make a move you have some decisions to make about your wolf pack and what improvements you may choose to make. These improvements will impact what actions you decide to take. The game has a lot of replayability due to the many choices you will have to make on each turn. It turns into a real brain burner as you try to plan out your moves and hope you have made the right calls on what to improve and which tiles to use and turn over. The regions look like Cascadia but this game makes you think about 4-5 things at once where Cascadia it was like 1-2 things at once. This game was a pleasant surprise as we did not know much about the game beforehand. It is unlike most of the other games in our collection. There are lots of decisions to be made and at the same time it is very logical so you know what you want to do, but you can't always do it, which is something I love in games. There are lots of pieces to set up so it is a bit of a table hog, but in the end very worth it. I suggest playing it a few times and trying different ways to win and see what is the best path. The game is not hard to learn or play, but will hurt your brain. That is a good thing. ... show more

  • Nice area control game, not too hard to learn.
A fun game of trying to build up a pack of wolves and establish dens to score more points than your opponents. There isn't any gory combat in the game if you want to play it with younger kids, you do hunt prey animals but it's really more like collecting them, and wolf on wolf interactions have the loser join the winner's pack. The instructions are OK but not great, it took some back and forth before I got it all. The wooden meeples are good but the difference between pack wolves and alpha wolves could be more pronounced, from a distance it's easy to mistake the two. ... show more

  • Gorgeous but a little complicated
So overall I think this is a gorgeous looking boardgame but the rules and play style are a little complicated to get into. I would recommend this game only to those who really enjoy strategy games and the age recommendation is on point, 14+. Its a lot of explanation and going back to the rules to crosscheck which may deter newer players. The biggest Pro going for this set is they did an amazing job as far as quality and art style of this game. The tokens, cards, and other pieces all are made really well. We really liked the 5 different wolves the players can pick from and also that the terrain cards sort of slot into place. The board is modular and you can mix/match the layout as well has alter it according to how many players you have. Where this game falls short is the amount of small specialized rules that you have to remember. They mention that it takes about ~75 minutes per game but if you're a beginner or don't really play in depth strategy board games its going to take much longer. The actual action and play-style don't really make sense with a 'wolf pack' setting so it doesn't help remembering which rules go with which action either. ... show more
