  • Excllent microscope with good compatibility with smartphone
This is a great starter microscope if you have a child interested in STEM study. It has a good image quality and decent diopter/eye view. It's constructed decently and has lasted about three months with a child using it. The additional parts provided are useful although they can get scattered and lost pretty easily. Recommended. ... show more

  • Fun science for kids and adults
This is more like a toy than a real microscope but it is still fun and gets you and your kids excited to learn about science. It comes with some prepared slides to look at and some blanks for you to choose your own specimens. I wish it had more magnification options. It only has three settings, but it is still amazing to see what you can see. ... show more

  • Neat microscope to use with your iPhone
This microscope set is a neat way to engage kids with an iPhone and make it a little more relevant/exciting for them. The microscope itself is a decent one and has some neat accessories. My kids enjoyed taking photos on the iPhone and the holder/adapter for it worked pretty well.

  • Great intro microscope kit for kids!
Our toddler (5 years old) really likes this microscope kit and we can see it sparks some new curiosity. You get a lot of different accessories with this and three, ready to view specimens, but it also comes with what you need to make your own. It does require two AA batteries to power the light at the bottom. It also offers a few different magnification levels going up to 600x(!). I think the really neat feature of this is the included tray (with all the suction cups) that attaches to the viewer and holds your phone so you can take pictures of whatever is under the microscope. Although, you need to position it correctly so the camera aligns with the viewer. But this also serves as a way to view together and being able to point things out. Our toddler occasionally asks to see the onion bulb that we setup to look at. We’re excited to try creating our own specimen of a spinach leaf. It is all made of plastic and is very lightweight. Which is good for kids - shouldn’t hurt or break anything if it is dropped. Overall, a great kit to spark that curiosity in your little one. ... show more

  • For young beginners, an OK microscope with microphotographic capabilities
All-in-all, not a bad microscope for the budding microbiologist in the family. Alas, I am old enough to remember that even a child’s microscope used to be made of metal with glass lenses and a mirror for reflecting light onto the specimen (it was in the days before LEDs and only expensive microscopes had built-in lights, and there were no smartphones). With today’s beginner microscopes, everything (including the lenses) is made of plastic, but they are lit with LEDs and two AA alkaline batteries! Speaking of plastic, the slides are also made of plastic so there is far less risk of breaking a slide and, if broken, less chance of getting a cut – something I suspect most parents will appreciate. The manual is well written and clear and if you follow the instructions on p. 5 for using the smartphone adapter, it will work (photos). The photos I included were of the microscope with and without the adaptor and images of onion skin at 150X and then I zoomed in on the image with my smartphone (in my case an iPhone 13 Pro®). Take the manual’s suggestion and have an adult install the batteries and help position the smartphone for a microphotograph. The microscope comes with various tools and containers for containing and working with samples, plus there are three prepared slides so the viewing can begin immediately. PROS • Fairly inexpensive, introductory microscope for children. • Optics are surprisingly good for plastic lenses. • Comes with a variety of accessories for holding and working with samples. • There are three prepared slides plus blank slides. • All slides are made of plastic and are less prone to breaking. • Clearly written and understandable instructions. • The user can capture images with a smartphone and the provide adaptor (follow the instructions on p. 5 of the manual). CONS • Being made entirely of plastic, the microscope feels a little flimsy. • With only one eyepiece at 15X, the power is limited to three selections – 60X, 150X and 600X. • Adult assistance with the batteries and especially the smartphone adaptor is essential. ... show more

  • Good beginner scope
This is a pretty nice kit to have for beginners and young children. It was really affordable when I got the unit, at about $23, but it has since gone up in price. The scope itself is made of plastic which can be a plus or con depending on how you see it, as it works great for a lightweight unit for children. A bunch of accessories are included, but it does not include the 2 needed AA batteries. There are a bunch of microscope slides, but only 3 that are premade for kids to look at. It's got instructions needed to get things started and get the unit up and running. The phone adapter may be a bit of a gimmick as it didn’t hold my phone well. It's also a bit difficult to get things setup if you wish to use it, but it does work for the most part. Overall it’s a good intro unit at an affordable price even though there are a few drawbacks. It’s worthwhile to get the little one’s interest going on STEM. ... show more
