  • Just know that it contains milk and look at cals
It astonished me how much better this made me feel than regular snacks. There are times on a hike or even about my day that I have not made it out to lunch yet and my body is telling me I'm hungry. In the past, I may snack on chips or trail mix, and will be hungry again 20 minutes later, but also regret the calories. I have now tried a survival tablet on a few occasions, and it's different. The flavors are nice. I would describe this as regulating your needs rather than satisfying your hunger. It allows me to continue thinking or working or going about without feeling down or anxious. But pay attention to the directions and the calories. It says to take one per hour and the calorie (energy!) count is actually low. So because I feel better than snacking eating these, I will keep these handy. And I'll save snacking for when I actually need the calories. ... show more

  • Taste like Freeze-dried Ice Cream and kept My Fitness Pal happy
I've just started training again after recovering from an injury so I'm on a higher protein-to-carb ratio for 6 weeks. I've had a butterscotch tablet at 2,3, and 4 in the afternoon 3 days this week and they kept my mind off snacking, (but I snack for flavor, not because I don't feel full). They have the consistency of butter mints to me. Somewhat. A little harder. Or really, really dense Astronaut Ice Cream. At the end of those days when I looked at my nutrients, I still had carb room for bread and popcorn to hit my fiber goal without going over on calories. Excellent! You couldn't and SHOULDN'T use these as a permanent meal substitute or a crash diet plan. They're vitamins with some carbs, protein and fat to keep you from becoming dangerously malnourished in a pinch (and keep you from going too crazy). They have no potassium for your heart and a day's supply has only 30g carbs, which is 100 less than an adult needs to keep from burning muscle to fuel your brain. (An adult brain needs about 130g worth of carbs daily to turn into fresh glucose quickly enough to function, otherwise your body will start digesting itself to use amino acids for gluoconeogenesis and you won't be able to think straight while you're waiting.) They're emergency supplements, not Soylent-in-a-tablet. I wasn't planning on eating them every day this way, but it's nice to know they're there to keep my stats somewhat balanced if I go someplace where cake is being served. I'll probably stick a pack in my husband's kayaking gear since they're light, take up little space, and aren't prone to damage. My mother also wants to try some for snacking reasons, so I'll need to get more for stocking stuffers. The main advantage to getting these for a DIY emergency kit is you can put a tub in your basement and forget about it for forty years. You're going to want to add something like meal bars or a trail mix featuring dried apricots or banana chips and rotate them out before they expire if you want a full range of nutrients. The nice thing is they'll give you something to look forward to every hour when you're under emergency stress, but if that's not an issue for you, you could easily use a bottle of multivitamins. instead. ... show more

  • Tastier than expected, good mouth feel, but...
I like these; they're tasty with a good chew. I feared they'd be chalky (actually expect that almost every time I eat one) but they really manage to become moist and malleable (don't want to say gummy, that's not right) and provide a good amount of chewing for that one tablet. All flavors have satisfied, none are "well, that's kinda gross but I can get by." Having said that, I gotta say... a package provides, what, 240 calories? That's just not enough food value to count as a "survival food." Yes, a single tablet can provide a good amount of mouth-feel satisfaction (that nice chewing bit I mentioned above) and that does actually linger... but. 240 calories? I'm a big (200lbs) active guy and I know my caloric needs pretty well.. 240 calories hold me as long as I'm doing practically no work. Heck, I might burn that much napping. I dunno. Perhaps as a "between MREs snack" to increase satiety.. I think I can see that. Might even work as a diet aid in non-survival conditions (as I said, there's a pretty good 'chew satisfaction' there). Just not sure they classify as "Emergency Food." ... show more

  • Handy and convenient
Happy with this product, have only tried the butterscotch flavor, and it's not bad. I agree with everything in the description about them. They don't make you thirsty just like they claimed, but kinda nice to have something to wash them down with. But in an emergency I believe it's a good thing to have handy. Something to have in the vehicle or emergency bag. Quality item. Worth the money. ... show more
