Description

“Stories of human behavior at its most extreme….With humor, compassion, empathy, and insight, Small searches for and finds the humanity that lies hidden under even the most bizarre symptoms.” —Daniel H. Pink, author of Drive and A Whole New Mind A psychiatrist’s stories of his most bizarre cases, The Other Side of the Couch (originally published in hardcover as The Naked Lady Who Stood on Her Head) by Gary Small, M.D., and Gigi Vorgan—co-authors of The Memory Bible—offers a fascinating and highly entertaining look into the peculiarities of the human mind. In the vein of The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, Awakenings, and the other bestselling works of Oliver Sacks, The Other Side of the Couch surprises, enthralls, and illuminates as it focuses on medical mysteries that would stump and amaze the brilliant brains on House, M.D. Read more

  • A highly entertaining and well-written book about a doctor's most unusual cases
I read this book under its original title ""The Naked Lady Who Stood on Her Head" and really loved it. So much so that I bought it for my son under its new title -- and read it again myself! These are the entertaining, well-written and very odd tales of a talented psychiatrist's most unusual cases which include a naked woman, who will not speak, but is doing a headstand in the ER; a mass fainting at a grade school; and an executive who suffers from dementia but only for a short period during the afternoon. Very interesting and nice breezy writing style -- not dry or heavy or too graphic in any way. I think this book would be welcome on anyone's book shelf. ... show more

  • Fun read for the pros and for the lay folk
The stories on here are fantastic. They really do encompass the kind of work that mental health professionals work with on a regular basis. Gary's method of story telling is easy to read and flows well between stories. If you're going into the profession, check it out. If you're curious about the things the mind is capable of, check it out. If you can read, check it out. You won't be disappointed. ... show more
