Description

A MISSING GIRL AN ORPHANAGE FILLED WITH SECRETS Order the new psychological crime thriller from bestselling author Daniel G. Miller Hazel wants a new life. She’s thirty years old, single, and her private investigation business is months away from folding. Her luck takes a turn when Madeline Hemsley, a mysterious socialite, pays Hazel a visit with an offer too enticing to resist. An orphan girl has disappeared from a children’s home—The Orphanage By The Lake, as the locals call it—and Madeline wants Hazel to find her. At first glance, it appears to be a standard runaway case, but as Hazel plunges into the investigation, she finds signs of something more: unexplained blood stains, cryptic symbols, sinister figures shadowing her every move. The more she digs, the more she realizes that The Orphanage By The Lake holds terrifying secrets, and even worse… …so does Madeline. Fans of Freida McFadden's "The Housemaid", Charlie Donlea's "The Girl Who Was Taken", and Karin Slaughter's "Pretty Girls" will love this twisty, suspenseful thill- ride. • Not my genre, but worth the read
Thrillers are definitely not the first books I'm drawn to on the shelf, but I read this for book club and well, I really liked it! I probably should have read the trigger warnings, r*pe being a driving theme for the MC and some on-screen scenes bring that back but it is cathartic to see her get the guy. I was quite surprised how well Miller (being a man) voiced a woman's inner thoughts. Hazel is smart, sarcastic, believable, and imperfect in the right ways to make her endearing. While the plot was a little predictable, Miller also hides the real culprit well. There is a nice unreliable narrator component in the few times that Hazel lets her biases cloud her thought, assuming it's her gut. It does have a happy ending though and while Hazel is left with aome hope of a lover, the romance is not a centeal focus and I appreciate that too. Bonus points for Kenny the roommate being the most wholesome character in the whole book. ... show more

  • Fun and satisfying
This novel delivered even with such a small setting. It touches on many relevant issues which I always appreciate when attention is drawn to them. I love the diversity of the characters, especially the main being Korean. I was able to predict much of the story but was still entertained. Easy and quick read. ... show more

  • Must read!
*The Orphanage By The Lake* by Daniel G. Miller is a captivating read that pulls you in from the very first page. The plot is masterfully crafted, filled with unexpected twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat. It's one of those books you simply can't put down, as the suspense and intrigue build with each chapter. Miller's storytelling is compelling, creating a rich tapestry of characters that are both relatable and complex. The way the author develops these characters, weaving their stories together, leaves you deeply invested in their fates. The mystery at the heart of the novel is expertly handled, keeping you guessing and suspecting different people until the very end. What truly stands out is how the book leaves you wanting more. Even after the final page, you're left thinking about the story and the characters, eager for another installment or simply more time in the world Miller has created. For anyone who loves a good mystery with depth and emotion, *The Orphanage By The Lake* is a must-read. ... show more

  • Good elements but...
The book definitely read like a ya book. Very easy to read and flowed well but the main character was so weak that I couldn't get behind her. She fell in love at the drop of a hat and was naive and her inner dialogue was so frenzied. She wasn't likeable. The plot did keep me guessing but then it got very very disturbing which I realize that happens in psychological thrillers but it wasn't for me. I know there is going to be a second book with this pi ... show more

  • definitely worth the read
I wasn’t expecting this book to blow me away by a long shot, but I was pleasantly surprised! Well written, entertaining and with a lot of characters that keep you second guessing who the bad guys really are. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

  • Sucked me in
It was a quick read, I finished it over a couple of days. Not too complex and a satisfying conclusion, though the ending felt a little rushed. I am looking forward to the second novel next year
