Description

What transforms a person into a killer? Can it be something as small as a suggestion? Turn this page, and you may forfeit your entire life. With My Annihilation, Fuminori Nakamura, master of literary noir, has constructed a puzzle box of a narrative in the form of a confessional diary that implicates its reader in a heinous crime. Delving relentlessly into the darkest corners of human consciousness, My Annihilation interrogates the unspeakable thoughts all humans share that can be monstrous when brought to life, revealing with disturbing honesty the psychological motives of a killer. • mind bending tale of love and revenge
Who is Oska? A possible tale of love and revenge or psychological pathology. Worth a read or two to untangle the strings that bind.

  • Worth a read, but be prepared for a trip!
Trigger warning: suicide, homicide, depression, violence. This book was a trip. There were more than a few moments where I found myself saying “WHAT?”. You expect something to happen, but you don’t know what anymore, so you’re on edge, but only a little, because you don’t think that what will happen will be quite that bad. Characters in this story seem to blur together until you’re not sure whose narrative is the truth and whose is made up. This book asks: what is life – what does it mean to be alive – why do we go on living? Beautifully executed, but also terrifying. The writing was well done, the narrative accomplished what I think the intent was, and however discombobulating that was to me as a reader. Once you get around to the end and start to understand exactly what’s happening, everything comes together. The ending itself is a strange sort of justice, and it felt right. ... show more

  • A complex and twisted revenge story
My Annihilation is one twisted revenge story. You won’t be able to discern what is the truth and what is a fabrication until the very end. This is a complex story filled with some god awful people and even the protagonists aren’t necessarily the best people either. But at its heart, it is a revenge story fueled by love. And this is not a simple revenge. It is complicated and involves patience. I have to mention some content warnings because there are a lot of messed up things that happen in this book. There is sexual, physical, and emotional abuse. The whole book in itself is dark and depressing. This is not a light read. But, it is an absolutely gripping revenge tale. I can’t stop thinking about the story and how messed up it all was. If you’re able to stomach the content it is well worth the read. ... show more

  • Good but short
Pretty solid story but surpisingly short in my opinion. Might read more from the auto as i like his use of real world killers being implimented into his stories.

  • Boring
I was interested when I read the reviews that this book was so crazy and messed up it would traumatize you but honestly i found it really boring and tedious to pick up. I did read it all but man was that a challenge. Interesting side note though I did read “the gun” by the same author a few years back. I didn’t know he wrote that book too. It’s a much more interesting read and the decent into obsession and madness in that book was way more interesting than this wet noodle of a book. This is my opinion tho. The cover of the book is pretty neat though so there’s at least one positive about it ... show more

  • So messed up!
This was a real brain stirrer. Considering all the layers of reality, the story was pretty clear. No wasted words, no excessive information, and you make your decisions at the proper pace. A great read.

  • inventive, one of a kind
A strange and at times confusing revenge novel that uses ECT, mind control and the relationship btwn patient and therapist as plot devices… I’m not doing this book justice. Humanity at its worst but for the best reasons?

  • Bold, innovative, but in the end a letdown
I liked the story's innovative structure , style, and format, the interweaving of journal entries, interviews, and first-person narration. Intrigued, I read the book at a fair clip, but ultimately I grew confused and frustrated and no longer cared about the protagonist, whose identity kept shifting. The ultimate reveal was somewhat of a letdown. But I liked Nakamura's boldness and willingness to experiment, and may try reading another one of his books. ... show more
