  • Love the Miss Marple "history" backstory
While it might not be the most well-known of the Miss Marple books, it does give us a glimpse of the childhood of little Jane Marple! Of course, there's a murder, and a mystery to be solved. But I focused on something we rarely see in an Agatha Christie book, the back story of one of her detectives. Miss Marple goes to Bertram's Hotel for two weeks, a treat paid for by her nephew. While there she visits places she visited as a child. Of course, things have changed and like most older people, she realizes time has gone by and changes are necessary. But she visits shops, gets items she needs and makes notes of people she sees (and later become part of the murder mystery). I'm an anglophile. I love reading and watching movies about the everyday life of British folks. For that reason, I enjoyed this Miss Marple a lot. ... show more

  • Very poor typesetting
I bought this $.99 version of the book and couldn't wade through it because of the messy words! 😖

  • The muffins are almost too good to be true…
At tea time at Bertram’s Hotel, the muffins are so good, the butter runs down your chin. The eggs are poached so correctly, they carry Miss Marple back to 1909. Bertram’s is as comfortable and comforting as it was in the Edwardian era. It’s almost too good to be true… Miss Jane Marple is there for a short London holiday financed by her kind relatives. She has tea in the lounge, observing the comings and goings. Concealed in a high back chair (not on purpose!) she overhears shocking conversations. She runs into people in unexpected corners of London having secret assignations. She sees so much — while no one ever notices her, she looks so old and ineffectual. But once again, Miss Marple is able to help the police in their inquiries. A wise old inspector discovers her and appreciates her powers of observation. Incredible things follow, including a a fatal shooting. There are some wonderful characters in this mystery. One of my favorites is the elderly, scholarly, incredibly absentminded Canon Pennyfather. ... show more

  • Good book that kept me guessing until the end
I love Agatha Christie books. This one felt a little disjointed at the beginning since it was Miss Marple observing things while at the hotel. But the book came together really well at the end and everything made sense.

  • Hard to read
This Kindle book is full of strange markings among the text making it very hard to read and enjoy. I finally gave up on the book as it was very annoying.

  • Malfunction of the text
I was looking forward to reading At Bertram's Hotel again on my Pixel 7. (I've probably read it three or four times during the past 40 years [hard cover and paperback]). Unfortunately superfluous extra text (2-4 extra characters) appeared at the end of words one or more times on approximately 10% of the pages. Since I had prior knowledge of the plot, I could figure out what should have been said (in most cases). However, this "feature" made it unpleasant to read the book. I was able to return the book with no difficulty. However, it would be nice if this problem were corrected. ... show more

  • Poor editing.
I've downgraded this edition. It's one of her less plausible plots, for one thing. But my biggest problem is with the typesetting marks left in, making it quite a wade through for a less than satisfactory plot line.

  • Clever mystery
This was a clever little mystery that keeps you guessing until the end. A variety of personalities to keep you guessing.
