Description

“Spells out how to eat well when camping out.” —The Washington Post “This is the rare book that considers campfire cookery as a gustatory pursuit.” —Sierra, the National Magazine of the Sierra Club Forget freeze-dried astronaut meals and bags of stale, store-bought gorp. Finally, here’s a cookbook that complements the magic of gathering around a campfire and sharing a meal with friends. From the IACP Award–winning authors of The Picnic, which brought taste and style to eating outdoors (in the daytime), comes its companion, for leaving civilization behind and dining under the stars. A mix of dishes to make ahead and meals to cook on-site, The Campout Cookbook includes more than 75 recipes for wood-fired skillet pizzas; backcountry stews and chilies; fire-roasted vegetables and cast-iron breads; unexpected dips, jerkies, and high-energy bars; breakfasts to satisfy that yawning hunger that comes from sleeping in the fresh air; s’mores, of course (including Vanilla Bean Dream Marshmallows & Co. and Dark Chocolate Raspberry Caramel Fire-Ban S’mores); and cocktails, coolers, warm libations for chilly nights, and a Blood Orange Bug Juice. Plus there’s inspiration and know-how for every avid camper and enthusiastic neophyte: How to find a suitable campsite and build a campfire specifically for cooking over, and how to keep it going. Stargazing for city slickers. A troubleshooting guide. And the definitive packing list and camp kitchen essentials. Just add a few scary stories for a truly memorable campout. Read more

  • Camping in the Whole Foods parking lot
The illustrations are cute, and the binding is stunning. The actual content, though, is… strange. There’s some very basic camping info and good tips, but the actual recipes are hard to swallow (pun intended). I’m a pretty capable cook, but I lost count of how many ingredients I’d never even heard of - and there are few recommended substitutions for those ingredients. If you live near a coastline and very expensive import grocery stores, this might be feasible - if you live more than a few hundred miles inland, though, or are camping as a budget vacation or family friendly trip, this book is a bust. (There are also a TONNN of alcoholic recipes that, considering the reader isn’t expected to know how to shop at a Save-A-Lot, how to use a thermos, or that bears exist, seems downright unsafe …..) ... show more

  • Beauty & Brains !
You’re not supposed to judge a book by it’s cover... but look at this thing! It’s gorgeous! I have it sitting out anywhere in my home for a little flair ;) . BETTER than that... it’s chock full of useful information! Keep in mind some recipes are for the camp out and some are for making at home to take with you (good lasting camp food). Someone who hasn’t been past the beginning of the book may not know better. I like that it’s in sequence and talks about pre-camp. The recipes for camp also have an at home method so you can enjoy these anytime. I’m a sucker for illustration and these are gorgeous. This book is just art to me... I haven’t gone camping in a while but this helps me get in the mood when I’m getting a craving for it. LOL i might need a new copy if I DO go camp soon because I really don’t want a speck of dirt on this beautiful thing. Such an art piece, I love it so much ... show more

  • Interesting book
It's an interesting read. My only complaint was that the copy I received smelled like a musty warehouse, so I'm getting a replacement and hoping it smells better. The cover is PU leather. No ribbon bookmark like The Snowy Cabin Cookbook, so I'll add my own after I have a satisfactory copy.

  • Fun "Gourmet" camping cookbook and more! 5 stars plus!
I recently purchased 3 highly rated (on Amazon) camping cookbooks, as an excited inspiration for next summer's Airstream trip to the US East coast and Northeast Canada. Can't wait!! This, by far, was my very favorite camping cookbook. The intro reads, "for survivalists with standards" and that is the key to this wonderful book. I love the outdoors, camping has always been a favorite activity since my husband and i got married many moons ago. Nowadays, my friends and I always "gourmet camp" and if you are into that, this book is for you! It is SO much fun, besides recipes (trail snacks, adult beverages, sides, breakfasts, main meals) it has games and many useful real suggestions for things to make your camp experience perfect! I laughed out loud reading many of the chapters, its like reading your funniest girlfriend's (or guy friend's) very useful and very original camping suggestions. Just loved it so much I'm purchasing 4 more copies to send to my camping buddies..its January here but this book inspires laughs and dreaming about that next camping trip.. it is truly wonderful. If you enjoy the outdoors and camping..but still enjoy your yummy food and drink, this book is for YOU! It's more than just a cookbook...its a whole camping experience. It's a little getaway. Plus, the chapter on different combos to make S'Mores... priceless! Just loved this book. Cannot wait to try out the recipes and cooking techniques. Nothing too complicated and lots of great advice. The recipes look easy and amazing combinations. Happy Camping! ... show more

  • Feels great in your hands and is an overall good reading experience
Listen, I'm just gonna be real here.... I saw this book at a local bookstore and was absolutely drawn to the cover. It just feels nice and has almost a wood grain texture! I wouldn't even necessarily call it a cookbook, its much more than that. There are stories and other helpful camping hints in there as well. Some of the recipes seem a bit much for me, as I'm normally a scrambled eggs, hot dogs, and marshmallows type of camper, but I could see that with this book and some proper planning, it would be a great thing to use prior to and on a camping trip with the family. I docked 1 star simply because like I said the recipes seem a bit weird to me and a little ingredient heavy, but the book is still a good value and a good reading experience. ... show more

  • Excellent Book on how diplomacy should work!
If you are interested in all of the work that went into the Iran Nuclear Materials Deal, then this book is for you. In addition though, it also speaks to what it is like to work in WA DC as a woman and the real hurdles that women have to overcome to hold these positions. The art of diplomacy is detailed out here and it reminded me how much I want a return to the "old" days when diplomacy was valued. Thank you Wendy Sherman for serving your country so well and inspiring more women to run the gauntlet and promote peace as our primary mission. ... show more

  • Really fun book that get's you in the spirit of camping.
I really enjoyed this book while prepping for camping. The recipes I used were really good and it just made the camping preparation fun! I really like how the book is printed and the cover art is really pretty.
