  • Works on Ubuntu 19.04 with DisplayLink
Style Name: Universal USB 3.0 Dual Video 4K
Super happy to have found this dock for my laptop running Linux (specifically Ubuntu 19.04 Disco Dingo). All the USB pass-through functionality works straight out of the box but you will need to install DisplayLink for any dock connected monitors to work. Being able to keep it under my laptop is perfect for me since it aligns the bottom of my laptop screen with the bottom of my second monitor. Added bonus is that it improved the cooling of my laptop too. I cannot say for sure whether it will work for 4k but I can definitely confirm that it supports 1440p and I assume it will indeed pass a 4k signal. Transferring files from my laptop's built in SD card reader to an external hard drive ran at the max speed rating of the SD card (160 MB/s) and reading off the external drive (USB-C ssd) did run at 520-540 MB/s so the dock doesn't seem to be a bottleneck. One minor complaint, having it connected hijacks all the audio even if don't have any audio out device connected to the dock (i.e. cannot use the laptop speakers). I assume there is a workaround for this but it hasn't been a problem for my workflow yet so I haven't taken the time to search more into this and it gave me an excuse to order new computer speakers which arrive in a few days (Monday September 9, 2019). I will update then if I run into any problems using external speakers connected to the dock. I highly doubt there will be any problems since it works just fine with headphones in the 3.5mm jack on the dock. Something to note about this, if you have a USB audio device with a headphone jack (such as a Yeticaster mic) then that will take priority over the 3.5mm jack. Pros Works with Ubuntu (with DisplayLink) Good instructions for installation (including Ubuntu specific instructions) Supports laptop and improves cooling Fast data pass-through Cons Hijacks all audio output ... show more

  • Probably the best USB dock on the market
Style Name: Universal USB 3.0 Dual Video 4K
This USB dock is wonderful. I was using a Dell D3100 USB dock before and the Targus DV4K out performs it in every way possible. The D3100 would occasionally lose its connection to the computer (I’m not sure if this was a Windows 10 driver issue or the dock itself). When this would happen, I couldn’t just refresh the hardware in device manager to get it going again. I would have to physically unplug the device. Not a huge deal I suppose, but when you are someone that has to VPN into work and your laptop loses its internet connection (or has to switch to wireless, then back to LAN), it causes all sorts of problems. VPN dropped when it chooses the wireless connection after the LAN is dropped. VPN re-dropped when the LAN connection comes back online. This hasn’t happened to me once with the Targus docking station. I can verify that 60hz at 4k (3840x2160) is working very well over DisplayPort on an Asus 28” monitor. This isn’t just a number either, there are very noticeable differences between 30hz and 60hz. I thought maybe my laptop wasn’t powerful enough to run a 4k monitor while I was using the Dell docking station. It was very jerky when I would drag a window from the laptop screen to the 4k monitor and I would see some bad mouse trails. This is all gone now with the Targus. You won’t regret buying this. I will forever be fascinated by the amount of information these technology companies can send over a USB connection. Simply amazing. ... show more

  • Works Well
Style Name: VersaLink Universal Travel Dock
This travel dock works well and as advertised. It is smaller than I imagined and despite its plastic construction has a nice feel and weight to it. I already had the Targus Universal USB 3.0 DV Docking Station for my desk setup so I knew the DisplayLInk technology it is based on works well on both Mac OS and Windows, so with the drivers already installed this travel version worked straight away. When El Capitan came out updated drivers were needed because although the existing drivers still worked for most applications browsers didn’t display properly so a good tip is to ensure you get the most up to date driver from either the Targus or DisplayLink sites. The travel version doesn’t have the same number of USB outlets and is missing audio in and out jacks, but the plus is its size for travel and that it requires no additional power input as it runs off the power supplied by the computer USB cable. There is an additional micro USB DC 5v power input which is apparently for gear with higher power needs, but the manual doesn’t say much about this and only says the adapter is sold separately. I haven’t needed to test this aspect out but imagine any standard USB charger would do the job. I would recommend this product for use with data projectors etc with either HDMI or VGA inputs and for giving an ethernet option for machines such as Mac Airs that need multiple adapters to allow these connections. The additional USB 3 port it provides (one in reality as it takes one away through being connected) might also be handy. ... show more

  • mostly works, cord is very short
Style Name: Universal 2K
CONS: - the cord connecting the dock to your pc is very short, and it's proprietary so you can't get a replacement. I haven't tried using a usb extension, but I feel like adding another cable in the middle is probably not the best bet. - the DisplayPort cord is set up in such a way that you can't detach it without unplugging the dock from your computer (center cord in the photo, it has the dock USB directly underneath), which is a minor gripe, but very annoying when I need to swap that monitor over to the other pc (that the dock's USB can't reach...) - I got this so that I could plug my work laptop in easily & swap to my home pc sometimes, which isn't quite the right use case. if you're going to do anything graphic-intensive, you really need your monitors directly wired to your machine. PROS: - works! pay attention to the fact that your monitors need to come from different inputs if you do this. (one DisplayPort + one HDMI works great, two HDMI or two DisplayPort not so much.) - love that I can hook up my speakers - no noticeable delay/issues for keyboard or mouse - it's pretty small (but still kinda tough to tuck away, since it's bristling with cords) ... show more
