My observations taking the bit out of the packaging: It looked to be a good quality tapered ball nose end mill. The small 1mm tip diameter should yield fine detail and the taper will make the bit stiffer and stronger than if it were a straight bit. The tradeoff for the taper is the 4 degrees limits the vertical cutting to 86 degrees instead of 90. This is usually not a problem with 3d carving and is almost expected. If it were a straight (not tapered bit) it would be very fragile. If my design had 90 degree surfaces I would use a straight ball nose bit ( probably larger diameter) I wanted to push the bit hard so I did a test cut using a piece of cherry hardwood, I skipped the rough pass and ran it faster than I usually do. The bit did a very good job as can be seen in the picture. The horizontal lines in the final were from my CNC not the bit. While it was cutting there was some chatter caused by the fill depth cut at a higher speed than I should have been using and limitations of my CNC. Picture shows the carve, the quarter is 3.25 inch diameter, the carve max depth was 0.22 inches (5.6mm) with a .1mm step over (.004 inch). I usually do a rough pass with a straight bit before using a ball nose bit to limit the depth of cut but intentionally skipped this step to push the bit. It did great carving hardwood with very aggressive depth and speed. Overall good bit for the money. ... show more

The end mill came in both a nice plastic sleeve and inside a hard plastic holder. I use this for the finish pass on carving projects. Works great!

I can't say that this wouldn't be good for other materials since I only work with wood but this gives a very nice finish to my projects.

Great little bit for detailing work. Be careful you don't get too aggressive with your depth, obviously, as it's a thin bit. That should go without saying, though. I definitely want to check out more of their bits after using this one.

I've been wanting to get a smaller tapered ball nose bit so I thought I'd try this one. It''s got a nice coating and it's very sharp. The tip comes with a protective cover on it which I removed and will leave removed (while it might keep me from injury while handling the bit, I'd be more likely to leave it on when starting a cut). Others may choose to leave it on of course. The plastic storage case have some markings which I believe are to identify the bit, but they don't make sense to me; so I'll be creating my own label. The nature of physics say that a small bit like this is more likely to break than a larger one (through no fault of the bit itself) so I appreciate the reasonable price. Overall, I'm happy with this bit. I am very happy with this bit I ordered this for 3d carving in wood and other soft materials at it works great. I am quickly becoming a fan of this company. I have several of their bits and they all perform well. This bit does a great job on 3d relief carvings. Be sure and observe proper feeds and speeds for the material you're cutting and this bit will perform well and stay sharp a long time. I'd definitely recommend these as an inexpensive alternative to the big name bits. They work really well at a great price. ... show more

The media could not be loaded. I have been trying to complete a project for some time but every bit I have tried to this point has failed. What I want to do is carver out a lattice design that will be a through cut in 1/4" walnut. This doesn't seem like it should be such a big challenge and yet all the 1mm bits I have used so far have not been up to the task. That's why I order this bit. Looking at the construction of this bit I could see it has a much more robust construction than the other bits I've used but I wasn't sure if the tapered design would provide the straight cuts I wanted. I first tested the bit cutting the design on a thick piece of pine and it cut super cleanly (see video). I then tried it on a piece of 1/4" walnut and it was cutting fine but there was a problem. In the time I had been waiting the cut the walnut it had cupped in the heat of my garage so I wasn't getting through cuts on the edges. The bit was cutting fine but because it wasn't cutting completely through the wood I stopped the job. When I commanded the spindle to move I forgot to raise the bit first and then I heard a loud snap. I though oh no I just lost another bit. But no, it wasn't the bit that snapped it was the wood. This is a durable bit! So I will have to wait until I get some new walnut to find out exactly how well this bit will work for my needs but so far I'm really impressed by the performance of this bit.
