Description

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In this collection of personal essays, the beloved star of Gilmore Girls and Parenthood reveals stories about life, love, and working as a woman in Hollywood—along with behind-the-scenes dispatches from the set of the new Gilmore Girls, where she plays the fast-talking Lorelai Gilmore once again. With a new bonus chapter In Talking as Fast as I Can, Lauren Graham hits pause for a moment and looks back on her life, sharing laugh-out-loud stories about growing up, starting out as an actress, and, years later, sitting in her trailer on the Parenthood set and asking herself, “Did you, um, make it?” She opens up about the challenges of being single in Hollywood (“Strangers were worried about me; that’s how long I was single!”), the time she was asked to audition her butt for a role, and her experience being a judge on Project Runway (“It’s like I had a fashion-induced blackout”). In “What It Was Like, Part One,” Graham sits down for an epic Gilmore Girls marathon and reflects on being cast as the fast-talking Lorelai Gilmore. The essay “What It Was Like, Part Two” reveals how it felt to pick up the role again nine years later, and what doing so has meant to her. Some more things you will learn about Lauren: She once tried to go vegan just to bond with Ellen DeGeneres, she’s aware that meeting guys at awards shows has its pitfalls (“If you’re meeting someone for the first time after three hours of hair, makeup, and styling, you’ve already set the bar too high”), and she’s a card-carrying REI shopper (“My bungee cords now earn points!”). Including photos and excerpts from the diary Graham kept during the filming of the recent Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, this book is like a cozy night in, catching up with your best friend, laughing and swapping stories, and—of course—talking as fast as you can. • Just Keep Going
What person does not know the song lyrics to “Where you Lead” the theme song to one of my all time favorite shows, The Gilmore Girls. When the reunion was finally announced I could not be more excited to finally see closure to a show that left so much up in the air. I mean, did Luke and Lorelai get together? What happened when Rory left? Did she become famous!? So many questions left unanswered and the world needed to know. Was I impressed by the reunion yes and no. Some of the story lines I found a bit hard to believe yet the beloved show still warmed my heart with each season. When Lauren Graham announced that she would be releasing a book that opened the world of The Gilmore Girls and her journey as Lorelai Gilmore I knew I needed to read it. Talking As Fast As I Can is one of the best autobiographical books in a long time. I loved that while reading the words on each page I heard her voice reading them to me and I could see her big gestures and see her laughing. Obviously some of it was a little annoying, like when she says hello to the entire cast of the Today show but that is her. I could see her fake waving as she is telling me this story from the comfort of my living room. Not only was it very interesting to see where she came from and what led to her famous role but the advice she received and gives along the way is something I will take with me forever. The two pieces of advice I will never forget is when James Patterson told her to “Keep going, keep going, keep going”. I mean that is so simple but such good advice. Whenever you feel overwhelmed just keep going because once you stop there is no telling if you will finish or not. She uses this line of encouragement in multiple aspects of her life and I think after you read her novel, you will too. She also advises our generation to “look up”. “If you never look out the window of the subway car, how will you see the boats gliding by on the East River, or have an idea that only you could have? Just look up for no reason, just for a moment here and there, or maybe for an entire day once in a while. Let the likes go unchecked and the quality of sleep go unnoticed.” I mean we all could use a good walk outside or car ride or whatever with out an electronic device or without anyone else to distract us. Amazing things can happen if we take the time to let them. I hope you consider reading this funny, informative, easy and wonderful book by Lauren Graham. ... show more

  • Like the soft voice of a friend over a casual ...
It took me far too many years to get on the Gilmore Girls train, but once I finally did, boy did I become an instant fan for life. As such, I was extremely excited to read Lauren Graham’s new memoir, Talking as Fast as I can. There are so many (wonderful) things I want to say about her book that it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly where to begin. Graham’s prose has an effortless, familiar feel to it. Like the soft voice of a friend over a casual cup of coffee. It’s obvious she’s a writer, and an extremely talented one at that. One of the things I was worried about before I started reading was that it might only focus on her life as it related to Gilmore Girls. While that would have still been a thoroughly enjoyable read, fans (at least fans like me) read memoirs to learn about the real person and their real life. In learning about their lives, we feel as though we’ve left the world of fandom and entered the world of friendship. And Graham’s memoir delivers a perfect blend of personal and professional to us. Talking as Fast as I can contains two large chapters where Graham recaps the actual filming experience of Gilmore Girls. The first, positioned near the beginning of the book, covers the original series, and the last, positioned near the end of the book, covers the revival. The remainder of the book follows Graham throughout her life from childhood to present. We learn a little about her family, about her upbringing and education, and, of course, about how she became the actress we love today. She’s witty, inspirational, and utterly entertaining. But it’s more than just a simple sharing of random moments of her life. You can tell that each story, each chapter, each word has been chosen with care and caution. It’s neither too short nor too long; it is just perfect. As her agent had once told her after reviewing her first novel, there are some publishers who will buy and sell anything (whether it’s good or not) a celebrity writes just because they know it will sell. She refers to those kinds of books as “Monkey Doodles.” I can assure you this book is anything but a Monkey Doodle. This is a wonderful book. An eloquently written book. One every fan should read. I came away from the book an even bigger fan. I’ve actually just started binging Parenthood and oh my… what a fantastic show. And I plan on reading her debut work of fiction, Someday, Someday, Maybe, as well as pretty much everything else she writes. Lauren is a warm and engaging woman who hasn’t let her success go to her head. And I’m very excited to see where her career and talents take her next. If you’re a fan of Gilmore Girls or of Lauren herself, and even if you’re not, take a few hours a get to know this talented and wonderful human being. If you weren’t a fan of hers at the outset, you will be in the end. FTC DISCLAIMER: This book was reviewed outside of the request of the publisher and/or author. ... show more

  • When the Twists and Turns Come Full Circle
Lauren Graham became one of my favorite actresses when I watched the first episode of Gilmore Girls. She somehow manages to exude a lovely chaos and an unexpected calm at the same time. It's a rare quality whether she's on set or giving an interview. Talking as Fast as I Can is fun and entertaining. Graham gives us some rare glimpses into her private life and career. She also dispenses advice with wit and kindness. What emerges is the story of a woman who has sacrificed for her career with gratitude and wonder instead of bitterness and regret. When she speaks about the actors, producers and directors she's worked with, she always mentions the writers, film crews, and assistants with equal kindness. It was a rare treat to read her synopses of each season of Gilmore Girls and how she felt about the storyline and her character, Lorelai Gilmore. She shares what it's like to move on from the series, work in films and find a new home on the set of Parenthood. It's also easy to understand why Gilmore Girls felt unfinished because it was. She talks about the decision to go back and finish the story and what it felt like to walk back in time - a time that moved forward and transplanted the cast in a present day not of their choosing, but full of possibilities. It's a fun read and you will be swept along. Graham writes with the same energy as Lorelai after her third cup of coffee. ... show more
