NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A vivid, frighteningly illustrated graphic novel collection of nine strange, dark, and mysterious stories, based on true events, from the mind behind the YouTube channel and hit MrBallen Podcast John Allen, known popularly as “MrBallen,” has been enthralling audiences with his unique brand of storytelling ever since he burst onto the scene, covering strange and mysterious phenomena ranging from the unexplained screaming heard in parts of Nahanni Valley, the Kandahar Giant found in Afghanistan, UFOs appearing at a cattle ranch in Utah, and Allen’s own brush with the paranormal. Deeply researched and seriously compelling, the show rapidly gained a devoted fanbase for the raconteur himself and for the rarely-before- covered unsettling occurrences and true crimes that have taken place throughout the world. In MrBallen Presents: Strange, Dark & Mysterious, Allen reveals the creepy underbelly of the human experience, charting bizarre and downright terrifying instances of the paranormal, the horrors of the natural world, and the danger of our own minds. • Beautiful illustrations and easy to read aloud to others
I immediately pre-ordered this book when I found out about it in April and am so glad I did. What a treat. I read this cover to cover and was surprised in hindsight to discover the length is 208 pages. The illustrations are wonderful. The nine story selections are a combination of classic Mr. Ballen channel favorites and new stories, all of which are intriguing and based on actual events. I appreciate that references are included in the Further Reading section. One of my all-time favorite Mr. Ballen segments is The Valley of Headless Men, so I love that this was selected to be the opening tale. The narration is fantastic and the stories are easy to read aloud to listeners who can't see the illustrations. I read The Beast of Gevaudan to my three kids tonight shortly after tucking them in and it held their rapt attention, which is no easy feat. Not only is Mr. Ballen a captivating storyteller, this book helps the rest of us be storytellers, too. I was an avid reader growing up and perhaps what I love the most about this graphic novel is that I have a suspicion it will be a school book fair favorite soon and help many kids also develop that love of reading. It is visual and also promotes research to read about the events that the stories are based upon. I had to follow his Amazon page after reading this and hope it is the first of many graphic novels. ... show more

  • A Captivating Dive into the Strange, Dark and Mysterious
MrBallen Presents Strange, Dark & Mysterious is a stellar debut graphic novel compilation from MrBallen, perfectly timed for the Autumn season. This collection of strange, dark, and mysterious short stories is an immersive experience that feels tailor-made for cozy reading by candlelight. What truly shines in this compilation is MrBallen’s flowing storytelling. Each narrative unfolds with a seamless grace, guiding readers through twists and turns that keep you hooked. The balance of suspense and intrigue is masterfully executed, drawing you deeper into the eerie worlds he creates. The art is breathtaking, with illustrations that beautifully complement the haunting tales. The dark palette and intricate details enhance the mood, making each story a visual treat. As I read this book wrapped in a blanket, the cold weather outside only heightened the atmosphere, making it the perfect companion for these spooky nights. Each story left me both entertained and contemplative, lingering in my thoughts long after I turned the last page. This graphic novel is a must-read for fans of the macabre and anyone who loves a good story. It’s the perfect addition to your Halloween reading list, and I can’t wait to see what MrBallen comes up with next! ... show more

  • I LOVE Mr. Ballen
If you’re not a fan of the strange, dark and mysterious, then you need to hop a board. Mr. Ballen is absolutely awesome. I have been listening to him for years. Once you start listening, you can’t stop. He also has podcasts which I highly recommend those also. Reading the stories in this book is awesome and the artwork is truly amazing. Mr. Ballen did not disappoint. Make sure y’all check him out on YouTube when he drops those truly crazy stories. Also, I am very happy that I was able to get this book. Even though I’ve heard the stories and I read them over and over they never get old. ✌🏻 (side note) when I read the book I use my Ballen voice in my head lol. It’s very theatrical. ... show more

  • Exactly what I needed from MrBallen!
I've been a huge MrBallen fan since 2016-2017 so when I saw he published a graphic novel I HAD to go pre-order it asap. I'm a huge book nerd and I read comics and graphic novels more than anything. So I thought for a couple years that he should write a novel but I never thought he would do a GN and I'm so glad he did! This book is amazing! The storytelling is incredible keeping with MrBallen's style and the art is top tier. It feels so immersive. Please do yourself a favor and get this book whether you're a SDM fan or not. You will not be disappointed. ... show more

  • Good for teens and pre-teens as well as adults
I enjoy Mr. Ballen's podcasts and thought buying a hardback copy was a good way to lend my support. I got a quality product with some very entertaining stories with great graphics. I compared one of the stories with the actual podcast, and the adaptation was excellent, including the essence of the podcast text with just a little tightening of the story. I'm a senior woman, but I think this would be a good book to give a teen or pre-teen, as the stories are mysterious more than scary. I usually don't like stories that don't come to a conclusion, but the enjoyment of these stories is in the telling and the mystery. I often give books away after I read them, but this one is a keeper. ... show more

I’ve been a fan of Mr. Ballen’s YouTube channel for a couple of years now. I preordered this graphic novel months in advance and it is my favorite read. The stories are easy to follow and they’re really enjoyable for those that love mystery and suspense. The illustrations are also great too. I’m now a lover of graphic novels!! I hope he releases more, maybe one for Redacted War Stories or Medical Mysteries?! ... show more

  • Very entertaining
I enjoy watching Mr. Ballen videos all the time so when he announced the book, I ordered it pretty much immediately. I like to support independent content creators in general and his work is pretty high quality. The same can be said for this book. I bought the soft cover version and it’s really well made, the stories are captivating, and the artwork is beautiful. I read the whole book on a flight from LA to Miami because I was so engaged. It’s an easy read and I look forward to the next one in what I hope to be a series of books from Mr. Ballen. ... show more
