After hearing positive comments about Syos sax mouthpieces from a few respected YouTube sax tutors I got the Syos Smoky and Spark models to try. These mouthpieces are made in France using 3D printing technology from SCAL3D, a new proprietary material developed by Syos for 3D printing. It may be non-traditional, but I don't miss the sulfur smell nor discoloration issues of hard rubber MPCs. Syos makes a host of mouthpieces, including many signature models, and you can even have them custom make a version for you at a reasonable cost. It arrived in a bag and box, without a cap or ligature. Syos makes a 3D printed ring ligature which wasn't included. The Rovner Platinum ligature shown in my photos works well with it as does a Vandoren Optimum. It came with an S branded cushion. You can see and feel the texture from the additive manufacturing process on the table which made me skeptical about how well it would seal a reed, but cane reeds do seal well, synthetic reeds not so much. The tip opening 7 is etched below the table and the Spark name on the side, with a big S logo on back. The geometry of rails and tip looks very even. Comparing both models, the Flame is about 1/4" longer than the Smoky, but because the shank is also longer, they both fit around the same depth on the neck cork. It was easy to distinguish them by their sound. Spark was indeed bright and loud, Smoky dark and warm. Did I sound like Michael Brecker? Not yet but I'm working on it. It was a joy to play, very free-blowing. Between the two Syos, I prefer the Smoky vibe more than the Spark, but it's great to be able to switch to the brighter sound when desired. I haven't tried all my different reeds yet-so far I like the way it pairs with a Nexus 2.5 reed. ... show more

I liked the fact that the quality of the product was as promised and rapidly delivered. I found the Spark Syos Originals mouthpiece superb easy to play, the sound clear, bright and beautiful. Like everything around music instruments it is all about personal preference and the right combination of materials. So with this mouthpiece from Syos. I got it a Spark Model size 7 tip opening. It is made with 3D print and you feel the layer on the surface. The mouthpiece feels light. it comes without ligature and cap. An expensive mouthpiece like this one should include both (see my thoughts about this lower in this review). A 3D printed cap should be inexpensive. The ligature I have is a little bit to small, I had to push it above the normal spot I usually prefer to have my ligature. So having a ligature fitting the mouthpiece would be nice. But I understand also that the type of ligature is also a personal preference, so it makes some sense not include one which doesn't cover your preference. You don't want a bad cheap ligature on an expensive mouthpiece like this one. Syos has a ligature especially designed for this mouthpiece. Perhaps I should get it for the next try. If you like to know more about this mouthpiece I refer you to the Syos Webpage. They discuss the different models and sizes, so you can make your own choosing. For myself, this mouthpiece doesn't fit my preferences. I don't like so much the roughness of the mouthpiece (defined by the 3D layers). I don't like the smooth mouthpiece cushion - I replaced it with my usual rubber one. I also did not have the right (soft) reeds available when I tried this mouthpiece. So the experience wasn't what I hoped for. Perhaps I will give the mouthpiece another try with the right ligature and the right reed and perhaps with a little more practice we will become friends after all. ... show more

This is a good mouthpiece, powerful crispy sound and mellow. It is way overrated. Is not a miracle mouthpiece or one of a kind as many people said. There are brighter mouthpieces than this one out there like Ponzol M2, Jody Jazz superjet. In fact this mouthpiece is the darker I have in my collection. Very good for the price, but the bright sound is in fact a wrong description for this mouthpiece. ... show more

Only been playing for about 5 years, and I’ve been using an Otto Link STM 9 NY. I really love the sound of the metal mp on my generic-brand horn, but wanted to experiment with a smaller tip opening to refine control. This mp is great! I think it’s going to help me achieve my goals of fine-tuning my tone and control. Cons: the rigid plastic ligature isn’t my favorite thing and this should definitely come with a cap as any other mo/lig cap doesn’t fit. ... show more
