  • Good for practice use
Color: Strength 2.5
Using for hobby/practice. Probably won’t use for performances though.

  • Waste of Money, DO NOT BUY!!!!
Color: Strength 2.5
A one-star rating is too high for this kind of junky reed. This should be given negative infinity stars! As you can see in the pictures, the tip was not at all cut properly, and very uneven. Reeds are supposed to match the profile of the mouthpiece which is standard. This reed fails at doing so. Then, when I compared it with my ReedGeek table, I saw that slope of the reed was also poorly cut. It leaves a very pronounced at the heart which causes the tip to bend (look at the 5th picture). Some reeds in the box also appear to have the bark extend into the tip of the reed, which should NOT happen at all. This company clearly does not know how to cut reeds (or even how to program a machine to do it) and it is guaranteed all reeds that you'll receive in the box are just splinters of wood. Even Rico Reeds sound like Legere reeds compared to these ones. For those wondering how they play? Well, they sound horrible! That's the result of poor craftsmanship. ... show more

  • Not good--very inconsistent.
Color: Strength 2.5
So far, I'm unimpressed with these. As a band teacher, I'll admit I come in with a bias against the "discount" reeds, but I do try to give them a chance. My reference point reeds--especially for my beginners--are the [orange box] and the [red and white box] from the local music store. As my students progress, I encourage them to experiment with different brands and then decide what works best. For my beginners and young players, they MUST have a consistent reed. Otherwise it's hard to tell the difference between an embouchure issue, an instrument issue (leaking pads), or a reed issue. These are not consistent. I shared 5 of them with my high school tenor sax players, and only 2 played consistently throughout the high and low range of the instrument. After some adjusting, one of the players got one more to play well, but 60% success is not high enough for my beginners to use. I'll save them as emergency reeds for my high school students (the frustration of a bad reed is often enough to get them to place an order on the spot). Pictures show the inconsistency of the cut--both thickness between reeds and even from one side to the other. ... show more

  • It's certainly a budget-friendly choice, but is it a good choice otherwise?
Color: Strength 2.5
I'm generally a fan of budget saxophone reeds and I've used a lot of them from different makers. There are few things more annoying than putting a $3 reed onto a mouthpiece and immediately chipping it. These are certainly budget reeds that should be well suited for practice sessions. I've photographed one of these "LightStar" reeds side by side with a famous brand's more costly product. Notice the edge cut. It's more squared off at the edges and shows a noticeably thicker cut (although both reeds are 2.5 strength). I would not use these without some reworking -- trimming and filing, although expending that degree of manual labor on finishing a packaged, customer-ready product defeats much of the purpose of budget reeds. ... show more

  • Budget reeds
Color: Strength 2.5
I haven’t used budget reeds before, and I can’t say these have converted me. The edges are boxy and odd, and the reeds aren’t very consistent. They didn’t do well on the high and low notes with my setup. Fine I guess for some more basic practicing. I gave it 4 stars because realistically that’s what should be expected at this price point ... show more
