  • The sound quality met expectations.
Color: 6 - Phantom Blue
I had no dislikes.

  • A great mouthpiece for a rich warm/dark tone!
Color: 5 - Anthracite Gray
I absolutely love my Syos Originals Smoky 7! I use it on all three (soprano, alto, and tenor) of my saxophones and it the only non metal mouthpiece I use with any frequency. At first I was concerned because I was having trouble getting my Hempke 3 reeds to sound on it, but remembered I had a similar issue with my Otto Link Super Tone Master with Vandoren; which prompted the switch to Hempke in the first place. I especially love pairing Vandoren V16, ZZ, and red box Java's with my Smoky, and it even performs well with Legere synthetic reeds. As someone who prefers a dark/warm and rich tone on all my horns I am ecstatic with how well the Smoky assists in shaping things in that direction. I also appreciated that, even tho flashing coloring on their mouthpieces etc is somewhat of a trade mark, I was able to purchase all three of mine in black. I don't dislike the other colors, but prefer a more traditional look when possible. Quite possibly the only drawback I've experienced has been on the alto and soprano versions while using a standard two screw ligature. Basically it was too long for the barrel and would slide off when I was trying to secure the reed. I recommend the M/O by Vandoren if you aren't using the ligature Syos themselves offer. The only reason I didn't was a combination of cost saving (so I could afford all three) and my own unfamiliarity with ring style ligatures, but all in all it's a minor drawback that was easy to work around. I look forward to using them for years to come, and it they ever get into making metal mouthpieces I will be their first customer... again for something on the dark side of the equation. ... show more

  • Fantastic Mouthpiece!
Color: 8 - Phantom Blue
SYOS truly makes exceptional cutting edge mouthpieces and now I use them for all my saxophones! I'm very happy with this new mouthpiece series from SYOS. The originals offer a full range of sounds depending on what you are looking for. The smoky has a beautiful dark and round sound, the steady has a nice edge and projection, and the spark can cut through perfectly when playing musical styles that require brightness and power. I've used them all and they are fantastic! I definitely recommend you try these!! ... show more

  • Love this mouthpiece for my Alto
Color: 5 - Anthracite Gray
I have a naturally very bright sounding alto and wanting to try something to darken up the tone a bit I gave the Smoky Syos original a try and found I really liked the sound it produced. Picked this up after trying another Syos original for my tenor. Syos makes great mouthpieces, highly recommended.
