Top Amazon Reviews

  • Very limited functionality, but could be an aid for disabiity
Style: Toggle
For the first time ever, I had a review rejected by Amazon. I used the word "farce" in an adjectival form to describe the promises made by this product, which Amazon informed me was a profanity (?) and "not based on my experience." Well, I beg to differ. What I write is what I experienced. Since I purchased these last month, I notice that many claims that used to be made are no longer on the company web site. The Amazon page still says "Works with Google Assistant & . . . " And what? you might ask. Here is what does not work. This product doesn't work with Alexa, not even the Echo Pro, which has a built-in hub, although Swichmate claims to be developing an Alexa app. It doesn't work with Google Home Assistant, even though it once said it did on the company website. According to other reviewers, it once worked with the Wink2 Hub, but no longer does after the last firmware update. I can't verify that.. When you link the Switchmate to the Switchmate app (via bluetooth) it automatically updates the firmware, so there's no option to stick with old firmware. I attach a screenshot from the Google Assistant phone app--which looks like great things happened, but -- nothing actually did. The fan didn't turn on at all. Also the window of opportunity to type or say something until "Switchmate" left the conversation was a little under ten seconds. I had to try three times to get the words out fast enough-- which is why Google thought I was searching "how to turn on a ceiling fan" (I won't say "farci***" again, but I will say "nonsensical.") I have a physical Google Home Assistant too, and it has no idea what a "switchmate" is. The company is not on the list of devices that can be integrated with the Assistant. However, the option to "Enable Google Assistant" option still exists in the settings of the Switchmate app. It delivers a pairing code that the Assistant app will accept, but to no result. What does work? The Switchmate phone app. As a disabled person these are worth it in terms of saving steps, or getting in and out of bed to reach a wall switch for the fan, but it is an expensive and clunky mechanical solution to a simple problem. In order for it to be useful, I'll need to set up another tablet for the app so I have the opportunity to charge my phone, and can keep a device within reach. Currently it's about as much work to chase the phone around the house as it is to get up and use the switch. As a renter, I didn't want the better solution of using smart home products that are wired into the switchbox. So, I wait for them to either develop a work around to get this bluetooth product to work with any of the current hubs. This is a clunky and expensive solution -- but for now, I'll just keep using the phone app. The version I bought was the first-gen of this product, and the price has dropped by about a third since they came out with a narrower version that you can use side-by-side on a multi-gang switch plate. ... show more

  • BEWARE!!

DO NOT BUY!! Due to software updates this product is no longer compatible with the wink hub. I purchased these in good faith and now have $370.00 worth of paperweights. The software switch mate provides works over your phone hugely limiting you range and response time to commands. It is also a huge step down from the features provided the alexa/wink combo. Per usual, both are blaming the other for the situation with no hint at time to resolution or if there will be one, meanwhile the customer again loses. It is now easier to go turn lights off/on at the switch. Just thought you all should no the business practices of these companies before you get stuck too! ... show more

  • It all worth it!
Style: Toggle
I read a lot of reviews regarding this product before I decided to purchase and a lot of them were quite negative... I wanted something simple to control the lights in my porch without the need to re-wire, etc... and this product works perfectly! It just snapped onto the toggle and with a minute or 2 of setup and pairing with my phone, it was ready to go. It did what I wanted - automatically turn on/off the lights as scheduled and I now never need to do it myself! If you want a simple solution, this is it, without any other hassle. I'm not thinking of replacing 1 of my smart light bulb with this Switchmate. With the smart light bulb, the switch needs to always be on and to turn it off, I need to voice control using Alexa or Google Home, which I think it's annoying... I just think it's quicker to push the Switchmate. I'm definitely going to buy another one, just thinking where I should put it. ... show more

  • Perfect as a timer replacement for older wiring.
Style: Toggle
This is exactly what I needed. My family's business is in a very old building, so the wiring is not exactly up to snuff for the fancier timer light switches. Most of the new switches require a neutral wire, which I do not have. I needed a way to make sure that my sign was turned on by a certain time, and would turn off at a certain time. This is perfect for that. Initial setup was very easy, as was setting the timer. Now, my sign turns on at 4:30, and off at 10. And if I have to turn the sign on earlier due to overcast weather, it still turns off at 10. I have not used the Bluetooth functionality really at all, besides the initial setup, but that went very smoothly on my Galaxy S7. The only thing I wish it would do would be in the timer setup. You can set the switch to either turn on or off at sunrise or sunset, but not within a certain time of sunrise or sunset. For example, I would like my sign to turn on an hour before sunset, but you can only have the switch activate at a certain time, or at sunset exactly, not at a set time before. Otherwise, this thing is great. I plan on purchasing another soon. ... show more

I'm giving this Bluetooth enable switch a STRONG 1-Star to correlate with the 20% of the time this device works unerringly and is highly useful. The other 80% of the time, I find myself trying to use my phone to connect with the switch, trying to pair and the app being unable to locate the device when it is 12-inches away. An absolutely bright spot is that I can now use the push button of the battery operated switch to turn the light switch on/off rather than a pesky toggle switch. ... show more
