  • A few trips under my belt with this luggage - here are my thoughts
Size: 3-Piece Set (21/25/29) Color: Black
I travel fairly often, a mix of weekend getaways and longer trips, so I finally decided to invest in a decent luggage set. After looking around, I went with the 3-piece SwissGear Opulence in black (though I would have preferred if red was an option!). This set seemed to fit in with what I needed in terms functionality & durability but still within an affordable price level. What I Love: ✅ Very roomy: This set is great for packing flexibility. For the weekend trips, I can just take the carry-on, and for longer trips, I have a variety to choose from, depending on if I'm traveling alone. I'm pretty good at packing light, but there are a ton of compartments that can expand if needed. ✅ Wheels that actually work: Anyone who's wrestled a wonky suitcase through an airport knows the importance of good wheels. I love that these wheels turn on a dime, which not only makes navigating crowded spaces a breeze, it's very helpful if the bag is heavy. No more jerky movements or rebellious luggage. ✅ Well organized inside: The inside is well-organized with pockets and straps to keep everything in its place. No more digging through a clothes avalanche to find that one essential item. The straps help compress things down too, which is a lifesaver for fitting everything in. I also invested in some good quality packing cubes with compression. Not only does this allow me to keep things organized, it's great for keeping my items secure from thieves or in the unlikely event the zipper breaks. Things to Consider: ❎ They do have locks, but not the fancy kind: The suitcases come with built-in locks, but they're not TSA-approved, which means if TSA decides they want to look inside your checked bag, they could decide to cut the locks, which would make them unusable. Also soft luggage sets like the Opulence use built-in zipper locks (hardshell luggage has the locks built into the actual shell). These are the type with the three-digit combination code you set yourself. While they're fine for most uses, if you are very security conscious you should be aware that they're not super strong and can be easily cracked by determined individuals. Also since the zippers themselves house the locking mechanism, a determined thief could potentially bypass the lock by tampering with the zipper itself. This is unlikely, but could become a big concern if traveling to certain destinations or are packing a lot of valuable items. I personally purchased TSA approved locks for my own peace of mind. ❎ Warranty: The warranty seems okay, but it's not easy to find the details. I was able to determine there is a 10-year warranty, but from what I can gather, it appears to mostly cover manufacturing defects and material tears. It likely wouldn't cover things like normal wear and tear, damage from airlines (which happens!). I'd definitely recommend clarifying the full warranty details before you buy so you know what's covered. I tried to find the warranty details on SwissGear's website, but it wasn't very clear, so I've sent an email to customer service and am waiting to hear back. ☑️ Soft sides: obviously we choose soft sided luggage for a reason, but if you've never purchased luggage before and don't understand what the differences between softside and hardside luggage is, this might help. With softside, there is more opportunity for bulging, especially compared to hardsided luggage. This can become a problem because you might find yourself packing more and get stuck paying an overweight charge, which no one wants to do. It can also be an issue if you're hoping to carry on your bag - it likely won't fit in the overhead bin. Not that big of a deal if they take your bag at the gate, but if they take it at check in, you're going to have to go through the whole luggage retrieval mess and some travelers like myself try to avoid that whenever possible. It's also possible you won't be able to fit your bags in your car. The way around this is to choose everything you want to take, then remove half of it 😉. And use packing cubes which helps keeps things organized. I like softsided luggage because it's lighter and I try to always pack light anyway. ☑️ Security: it's easier to cut through softsided luggage than hardsided, but honestly, if you're traveling someplace where that's a concern, the only luggage that's going to protect you is something made of metal anyway. Overall Verdict: I'm pretty happy with this set. It's practical, easy to manage, and holds a ton of stuff. If you're a frequent traveler who values functionality over luxury features, this is a good fit. I've owned SwissGear products for years and have always been pleased with the quality and durability. ... show more

  • Simple but excellent - absolutely love the front pocket design
Size: 3-Piece Set (21/25/29) Color: Black
This 3-piece SwissGear roller luggage set is basic but really nice and I am very happy with it. The set includes 3 bags: 21", 25", and a 29" bag. Each of the bags is identical in features - just smaller or larger versions of each other. And they nest into each other very nicely for easy, more compact storage. They have a simple but elegant look to them. - These bags each have 360 spinner wheels (my preference for ease of maneuverability) that work and move smoothly. - Each bag has a telescoping black, metal handle -- no issues with these as they work and lock well. - Though these cases don't have a lot of interior pockets along the sides or frills, sometimes that just means they have more actual usable packing space -- and that is definitely the case here. These suitcases have A LOT of interior space, especially the 29" bag -- I don't think I could fill it if I tried (and I am a big over-packer). I also feel that the interior space on the carry on is good -- sometimes that is sacrificed for the sake of spinner wheels, but this one is roomy. Great packing space in all 3 sizes plus each also has the ability to expand for even more room via a 2nd zipper. - Pockets: There is a single interior mesh zipper pocket on the inside of the lid that is the full size of the case (so lots of room there). The exterior pockets are REALLY NICE on this bag. There is one on the front that is about the depth of my hand -- so perfect to throw your phone or wallet in when going through security, storing charging cords for easy access, or also a great option to keep liquids in for easy access to remove for security line. The second pocket on the front is a full sized one that works for papers, laptop, smaller electronics, or other items you want easy access to -- and this one opens correctly with the bag in the upright position (you don't have to lay it flat to open and use this pocket) and opens 270 degrees for easy access to the items in it. - The material is a nice, thick quality and the handles are padded for more comfortable use and ease of moving the suitcases around or picking them up from the carousel (there is one on the top, the side and on the bottom) - The only things these bags really lack is a TSA lock and the internal side pockets for smaller items. For me the lock isn't really an issue since I don't usually need it, and though I like the little pockets for organization purposes, I also appreciate the huge packing space that has no impingements on it -- so it isn't really an issue for me to have them or not to have them and it doesn't take away from the cases as far as I am concerned, especially with the large mesh pocket on the top. Overall, this set is elegant and very functional with loads of room to pack in, and I would definitely recommend! ... show more
