I got these for camping and love them! I've been using these for about 3 years now and have no substantial complaints. They really work and it is pretty easy to use to start a fire. Creates a lot of sparks, but takes a little practice at first to get it right! Especially if it is wet or cold out this will be harder to use. The instructions that come with this are honestly a bit confusing, but I watched some Youtube videos ahead of my trip to help with that. I got the set that should glow in the dark. It doesn't glow very well at all. The para-cord glows more than the plastic handle. That said, it sparks really well and started my tinder in just a few good strikes. I think it is worth the price. I'f I was packing for a zombie apocalypse these would absolutely be in my bag. I have a set of bugout bags for my family and these are in all of them, and I never go camping or hiking or trail riding or anything like that without one. This little piece could be the difference between you or your family surviving or not, and it's so small and convenient and cheap for what it could possibly do for you. I would not go cheap on anything I am relying my life on, so i tested these right when i got them and after testing i ordered more! They do exactly what they are built to do, for the price they are a great quality piece and feel solid and sturdy, compas works on all of mine, whistle works on them all, striker and scraper work as they're supposed to and you can definitely start a fire with them many many times. Tie them to your packs with the supplied paracord and hope you never need them, but know you are set if you ever do ... show more

    • Solid Magnesium Rod! Whistle is hard to blow

I gave this 5 stars because it's primarily a fire starter. One thing I like about it is that it appears to be a solid magnesium rod. Other flint and steel combinations I've owned have a metal rod, and then a small magnesium dowel inset into the the top of the steel rod. So, if my understanding of the rod is correct, you get a full rod of magnesium -- several times the amount of magnesium you get in most other flint and steel combinations. The other thing I like is the saw-tooth edge on the steel. It allow you to scrape off magnesium so it lands on your tinder. This extends the spark, increasing the chances you'll start the fire. With the rod being solid magnesium, it doesn't bother me that I'm using up a lot of the magnesium. I think it'll last a long time. The whistle is a disappointment. You have to blow really hard, have the butt of the handle positioned exactly right, and the sound isn't that loud. But I didn't buy it for the whistle feature, so it's not a big deal. It comes in a natural looking cardboard box, and yes, you get two of them. So I gave five stars anyway. It sparks up pretty well, and it's lighter than my other flint and steel combination I own. I like to watch survival shows and many times people cant build a fire to stay warm until help comes. Pretty cool item. Has a whistle to make noise, assists making a fire and has a neat compass. Stay safe on those hikings!

The Magnesium rod isn't porous enough to get bigger shavings off of it. Not to mention when you are using their scraper/sparker to shave it off it creates sparks while in the process. I have made many fires in different outside conditions with similar products, and to be honest the Harbor Freight $1.00 version of this system works 1000 times better. ... show more
