  • UPDATE! - impressed with original quality
OK, so it is 4 moths later (original review below) and we have now constructed the swing set. This is one very sturdy and well-designed kit! You will NOT regret buying this set! Let me update you. The pieces go together very well. They are well-marked. It will take two people who know what they are doing and can use drills, sockets, drivers, clamps and other wood-working tools, about 16 total hours to construct -- 32 total man-hours. You will need to at least, generally, level the ground where the set will be set up. Directions are helpful for locating the set and providing clearance. This does take up a lot of space. You will need an area that is about 12-feet by 20-feet overall, all of which should be pretty level. If you start with a fairly level, rock-free space, it takes about an hour to level the ground simply using a 4-foot carpenter's level, small digging tools and a chalk line. Make sure you follow the instructions in order to avoid tricky assembly challenges. Also, check the updates as the parts list did not exactly reflect what the instructions showed, but they had sent an update that reflected the changes that we would have to make. Not a big deal. The beams are very sturdy and do NOT need any reinforcement, so you will have all the parts to do this job completely. I would separate all of the screws and bolts into small baggies or small bins and mark them with exactly what they are. There are numerous different parts and they will eventually get confusing unless you start by separating the parts. Having a few extra, exterior deck-type, 1.5" screws would not hurt! The cedar wood is VERY dry, therefore it is easy to splinter and/or get slivers in construction so use gloves when possible and have a good tweezer handy, just in case (I got two pretty good slivers). Use wood clamps to held pieces exactly in the right places before drilling. We had at least two twisted pieces that had to be clamped tightly before drilling to get them in the right place. Other pieces should be clamped for alignment because there are a lot of things that have to line up! Not using clamps could set you up for some frustrations when things don't line up or do not seem level!! When you get this assembled, I would most certainly give this two soaking coats of Olympic or Thompson's water sealer to protect the set from the sun and excessive moisture. You could use a garden sprayer or a paint roller. Cedar will not "rot" like landscape beams, but it probably can get moldy. Then I would spray it again every spring. This will only take about 30 minutes, but should be well-worth the effort. ORIGINAL REVIEW: We just got this for our grand-daughter, and have not constructed it yet because of the weather. However I have taken apart the boxes and my initial reaction to the quality is very good. I was thinking I might need an architectural aluminum channel bar across the top to make sure the weight limits will work with kids being kids, but I really don't think it will be necessary. The key to a long and useful life may be using a good moisture and mold prevention product as we assemble it and periodically applying it. ... show more

  • Very pretty. Very difficult to assemble.
This is a great playset. It's absolutely a beast to put together, and they inexplicably don't include the 2x4 needed for the slide support, but once it's assembled it's beautiful. It took my handy husband and father in law 2 weeks of working on it on and off after work to finish it. This is by no means a single weekend project. But if you want a pretty wood set that will help enhance your yard and give the kids a place to play, I do recommend it. ... show more

  • Assembly is worse than Ikea
Nearly 30 hours and a few trips to the hardware store and I finally figured noshed this thing. #1 three different driver heads needed? At least they gave me the hex head, but no square head and the one I had got eaten up in no time. #2 measuring needed. Lots of measurements where they could have punched some holes or predrilled #3 lots of peeling of wood #4 no lables on pieces of wood. To make sure you use the right one you are constantly measuring #5 lots of extra cheap parts, Missing high value, high importance pieces If you need a project, go for it, if you don't have time or are not handy, stay away ... show more

  • this is strictly for kids as its not sturdy enough. The whole set sways when I tried ...
This is some kind of chinese wood. Be careful while running the nails into the wood, it might crack the wood, even the big and thick ones. Grown ups, DO NOT play in this, this is strictly for kids as its not sturdy enough. The whole set sways when I tried to swing in it. Its a bit risky. Very cheap wood. ... show more

  • A solid purchase
For starters, since I’ve bought it the price has gone up about 35%, maybe it is seasonal. Something to be wary of. It came in one pallet of assorted, labeled boxes. All wood pieces were easily labeled. Once I unpacked it and organized it to the layout in the instructions it was easy to find what I needed. The screws aren’t labeled, you have to use pictures, which isn’t hard, but the screw lengths aren’t precise. A 2 1/2in screw won’t measure 2 1/2in. Just something to be careful of when assembling. Assembly instructions were clear but there were a couple of steps, maybe 5ish out of 50 or so that weren’t the best way of doing something. For example, on the slide instructions, it says to drive the stake into the ground and screw it in to one side of the bottom of the slide. The pamphlet that came with the slide instructed you to attach the bottom of the slide to the stake in the center. Most of the wood had prescribed screw holes, which is fantastic, but some steps didn’t and you definitely need to in this wood or it will be more prone to split. It is worth noting the instruction specified locations to attach pieces of wood to each other and rarely did the predrilled holes match those measurements. I took a gamble and used the predrilled holes and everything lined up well. I assembled it alone and it took me probably two 8 hour days. I wasn’t in a rush and was very meticulous with my angles and measurements so I probably could’ve finished it a few hours quicker had I rushed. It is cedar, and it stained. However, a coat of sealant after assembly would extend the life of it if you’re looking to keep it for the long term. It does not come sealed. Just a heads up, it does require some minor digging for the slide supports and of course the stake. Overall, not that it is assembled it is a great play set that came as advertised. It came with everything needed, plus a couple extra pieces of wood and screws. My only complaint is the flimsiness of the slide but it’s plenty sturdy enough for a small school age child under say 75lbs. ... show more
