  • A Cheaper Option.
The media could not be loaded. Update 8/8/2017 Was able to get out onto the water with the swell and do some testing vs the Mission Delta, as well as vs no device. First impression was a little disappointing. As I unwrapped the safety cord, I was sad to see that it did not come with a clasp and so a not has to be tied when it is used instead of simply clipping it to the boat, perhaps this is part of the cost savings to reach a lower price point, but seems a little short as the device still costs a couple hundred bucks and a clip would have cost a few cents. Moving past that the device did indeed float, but while that is listed as a reason it doesn't need a tether, even floating, it can be a challenge to find something on the water if you are not sure where it came off. The Mission Delta also floats, but provided a very nice hookup cable with clasp. In great part this review is a comparison to the Mission Delta device, which I have used for the last year and have been quite happy with. You can read my Mission Delta review here: http://amzn.to/2fem6jH Attaching it to the boat, I immediately missed my Mission Delta. There are two many differences. When pressing either up against the boat, while in the water, you are also pushing yourself away from the boat. This makes it a little challenging to set the device as if you do not get suction quickly you are almost immediately no longer touching the suction cup to the boat. While neither is hard to do this with quickly, it is hard to get it in the right location, which testing has shown matters, quickly. With the Mission Delta, I am able to set one cup quickly and sloppily and then adjust the positioning, setting the second cup well, and then repositioning the first cup. This procedure did not work with the Swell. Once I set the first cup, I could not move the device at all. This made getting it low and back as far as possible challenging and a little frustrating. It took me several attempts before I was able to set it. The attachment process is complicated by the need to "burp" the suction cups to remove as much air as possible before setting the clip, in order to get the best seal. The "burp" is done by pressing the clasp into the suction cup before closing the clasp. All that said, the suction created by the swell was clearly stronger than the Mission Delta. While that is a good thing in general, it is pretty moot as I have never had an issue with the Mission Delta coming off even when I forget to remove it and am going 35, it easily stays attached at the 8-12 surf speed. With the device attached, it was time to test the wake. We had weighted the boat to our sweet spot, about 1500 lbs upfront, 750 lbs center, and 2500 in the back evenly distributed, it's a 25 ft boat, takes a lot of weight. The wave still looked like trash. Slop coming down both sides of the peak with no definition. Starting up now with the SWELL in place, this immediately changes, the wave takes shape becomes well defined. The Swell is doing it's job, and I am ready to surf. The wave is a little different than the Mission Delta wave we have become used to. The wave is not as "long" meaning that, face of the wave is closer to parallel with the rear of the boat, and less parallel to the side of the boat, or said differently it faces the people in the boat more than the Mission Delta wave does. This difference means that the wave will feel a little bigger (it is not), and the wave will have greater "push" to the rider, making it a bit easier to ride especially for Mr. 280lbs like me. On the downside, it means less surface area to work with when doing tricks (I'm not there yet, but my buddies are). We could adjust the situation by adding additional weight forward in the boat to elongate the wave, but we are already at risk of scooping up the wave when picking up a down rider, with the amount of weight we have upfront. With the swell attached, turning the boat against the device becomes very difficult, in fact the boat just isn't really willing to turn against it. I am told this is more comparable to the wake plates that are common on the newer wakesetters, the devices that inspired these alternative devices, for those of us who can't buy a 2018 boat. The Mission Delta was not nearly as notable in this regard, while some challenge was felt, I frequently still turned against the Mission Delta when picking up a rider. There is another side effect caused by this. The front of our boat when loaded this way will easily dip below the peak of the surf wave we create if we turn into it, resulting in a bit of a tidal wave of water coming onboard. Our practice is to stop and let the wave pass before turning, but the Swell has a mind of it's own and will start that process prematurely if we do not pay attention. All in all though the Swell does the job, it is not too difficult to work with and I do not have a problem recommending it. However, it is not a clear replacement for the Mission Delta, and we will be keeping both on the boat, to suit rider preference. See my pictures attached as comparison and mark my review if you found it helpful. There are also a number of links in my original review below, check them out if you have the time or just to say thank you for the time I spent preparing this review. -------------------- Pre-boating reivew Received this yesterday and wanted to post some preliminary results. I have and love the Mission Delta, but have been very curious about the SWELL solution and how it compares to the Mission Delta. You can read my Mission Delta review here http://amzn.to/2fem6jH The Swell appears better built than I had expected. It is substantially heavier than the Mission Delta. It appears that it may take more space, as the Mission Delta nests well around a corner in my boat, but if it delivers, I'll make room. I was happy to see that it had an included tether, though the tether is not as nice as the one on the Mission Delta. The suction cups seem to cup significantly more than the Mission Delta cups do. This should provide substantially more hold potentially, but I have not had an issue with the Mission Delta moving ever. I will say that I am looking forward to testing both of these on Saturday, and mostly to surfing the best surf possible. I'll update once I have the new info. ... show more

  • You Get What You Pay For. - Swell? Not so much
Disappointed… If you don’t want to read a long review, here is a summary. This is not a great product, the reviews it has are very biased and very few were verified actual buyers (1 out of 42 at the time of writing this). It doesn't have the graphics like the picture shows - there are no decals on it. This is a cheap glass hauler with some glued together plastic riveted to it. It sinks, its ugly and it will rust. Worst of all - its dangerous - it has sharp edges, its a heavy item tied to your boat and at slow speeds, it pulls the boat slightly in the direction that it is attached to. I am sorry I am being so critical – I am just very disappointed….. Here is the detailed review - My friend let me borrow his Mission Boat Gear Delta wake shaper and I fell in love with wake surfing I have a Mastercraft Prostar and using the Delta allowed me to literally “let go”. With just ballast I wasn’t able to drop the rope to wakesurf, with the Mission Delta – I was finally able to let go and actually surf! How I got here - I am cheap, I drive old cars and yes – I have an old ski boat. When I looked on Amazon for the Delta, the swell popped up. The price was attractive, especially considering its going on my old ski boat. Of all the options out there, there are two themes of solutions – the suction cup theme and the Velcro theme. Even though I have an old boat – it does look nice and I didn’t want to put Velcro on it. Plus, that option is more expensive anyway. Reviews - When I found the “Swell” I knew it didn’t look as good and read that they didn’t float but I read all of these amazing reviews and thought it sounded like a good value. What I didn’t realize until now is that only 1 of the reviews of the 42 was a verified buyer. The rest of the reviews – who knows where they came from. Amazon – if you are listening, I think you should change your ratings to only verified buyers. It’s obvious that whoever is selling this is gaming the system and it’s not fair to Amazon buyers! Construction - The suction cup handle that this product is based on it made for hauling plate glass (see picture). Its not designed to go into water so I am wondering what will happen to them a year from now when they start corroding. Since buying this, I have seen pictures online of the springs rusting and there is even a company that sells aftermarket springs to repair these. I don't know how you will repair the metal handle though. The plastic portion was has two CNC cut pieces that are glued together with some kind of hard glue. For being glued together – it does seem surprisingly strong. Of the entire package – I would say that the plastic part is the strongest part of it and will last the longest in a wet environment. The downside to the plastic portion of it is that it has sharp edges. Make sure to take this off the boat before having people jump in the water. I am sure it could cut you open very quickly or damage other boats and property. The one I got has a few pieces of something inside of it that are rolling around in the metal handle. I think maybe they are from when they riveted on the plastic pieces? Hopefully it isn’t a piece of the metal casting or the suction cup hardware. Performance – The swell is physically smaller but heavier. The Swell did improve the wake but the Delta worked better without the safety and quality concerns. The Swell does not come with a leash – put one on or you will lose it! I didn’t remember to go to the store before the weekend, so I found some very strong woven nylon strap to use. It saved me from losing it but having a heavy plastic and metal object bouncing around the back of the boat is not cool or safe at all! I think this will be a major liability for Swell going forward. I did throw it in the water to see how fast it would sink and it sinks very fast. When you pull it out, water comes out of the rivets on the unit – so water is definitely getting inside of it which worries me. When using my friends Delta I did lose it twice. Both times I forgot it was on and took off fast. At just over 30 MPH, the Delta slid off the back of the boat. When I circled around to grab it – it was floating nicely with the tab sticking up like a flag – easy to see from a long ways away. The Delta came with a leash but I never used it as it floats and I didn’t want to deal with hooking it up. With the Swell, you probably won't forget as it does pull the boat to the side slightly at low speeds. Compared to other products – I have never owned or used the Ronix product so I can’t comment on the product or its performance on a boat. I never wanted to have Velcro stuck to my boat so this wasn’t an option. Since the Mission Delta launched, there has been a ton of “copycat” designs out there. From what I can tell and have read, the Swell is the least bad of the bunch. Yes the Mission Delta is more, but it looks nice, it works better, it floats if you drop it from the boat and it will last a lot longer. I have been reading online there is a litigation happening with these knock-offs so I am wondering how long some of these “copycat” companies will be around. If you buy one of these knock-offs with a warranty, it won’t be very good if they aren’t around to support you. Packaging - The Swell comes in a plain cardboard box with a sheet of paper with instructions printed on it. The packaging matches the product – homemade. This thing probably belongs more on Etsy than it does on Amazon. Summary - If you are shopping purely on price, this does help... If you don’t know if you are going to like wake surfing and are willing to buy a something that is basically a disposable product that will corrode and sink – this could be fine for you. Just be aware of the safety issues - especially with kids. If you want a durable, great performing product, that will last, I would suggest you invest in a better product, which is what I am going to do now. P.S. - I did think about giving this a two star rating but due to the safety issues ( I have kids) I couldn't do it. My friend teased me for buying this and kept saying "Gee whiz, thats Swell...." and then laugh. They have the Mission Deltas and I have Delta Envy.... Attached the following pictures - 1. The suction cups that are designed for glass - they also apparently like to hold weeds... 2. The box and packaging 3. What happens when you drop it in the water.... 4. The instructions - note - it does say to be careful of the steering with it on! It doesn't say that in the description of the product. ... show more

  • Watch the suction, but good results overall
Surprisingly, this thing made an awesome wake. Ran on a Supra Launch 21V, and when ballasted properly threw a huge, clean wake. Was not impressed by the lack of suction and it took several tries to get it to stay on the boat. Its not a simple set it and forget it. Luckily we spotted it quickly after it fell off. ... show more
