  • Very Limited Feature Set
Color: White | Single Floodlight Camera
Your first struggle will be trying to get the camera paired. The manual will say to use SAFE by Swann, but that app has been retired. About a month ago, they said to use the new app SWANN Security and I was able to get one of my flood light cameras to work. Yesterday (8/12/2020) the SWANN Security app wouldn't recognize my second floodlight's WAP because it wanted a different pattern; support said to use SAFE by Swann to add it and then it would automatically be migrated. When the SAFE by Swann app wouldn't work, they promised to call back within an hour (mind you this was 10:30pm and I have a child in summer school and a baby). 24 hours I still haven't heard from them and I set on hold for multiple hours this evening trying to get a response. I can understand there being pains while migrating apps, but the new app doesn't completely work with the flood light camera. You can't directly pair them anymore and some of the answers to the FAQs surprised me as the options are no longer there; for example, for the light control you can adjust the motion sensitivity, brightness, and turn on or off the light. There is no home or away mode. To go forward with terminating a current app and forcing people to use an app that doesn't very basic, expected features is very disappointing. While they advertise a loud siren, my working floodlight camera is mounted between two single car garage doors. When parked head in so the driver's side door of my car was within feet of the flood light (couldn't get closer), I activate both the siren (you can only trigger on motion) and I attempted to talk to my son. He said that while inside the car with the door open he couldn't hear either; he could only hear them while outside of the vehicle and then just barely. If that's the case on a quiet suburban street, the features are pretty worthless and the advertising of a load siren seems false. For me, the biggest disappointment was that despite being advertised as working with Google assistant and when I go into Google assistant it lists Swann Security, I could never get my Swann account linked. When I asked Swann support about this, they said that feature is still in development. This was really disappointing as according to support (8/11/2020) there is no way to view the camera on a chrome cast or outside of the Swann Security app. That means only my wife and I can use the cameras (and then only if our phones aren't dead) and that my children aren't able to access the cameras. Part of the point of the cameras was it is hard to see people who are in front of our house, so we wanted the children to be able to see if it was someone like their grandmother whome they should let in or a friend whom they might want to speak. Considering my now 15 year old step son had a group of people after him because they tried to steal his bike when he was 12 and he got away embarrassing him until this spring when many of them were arrested related to vehicle thefts and the primary one after him had multiple guns on him which ended that group but another teen is making trouble as she stole a credit card and used his phone to try to purchase iphones and he told the police he let her use his phone (they already knew as she used her real name and address for the shipping information), she's had people knock while a group of 10 kids hides out of sight. Luckily my wife or I have always answered the door, but we don't want to go back to not being able to have our kids complete basic chores like taking out the trash or taking the dog for walk. These features are critical to our use case and the false advertising is very disappointing especially since the Amazon listing still lists the Google assistant and their website lists both the Google assistant and using with a chromecast when I checked it earlier today (8/12/2020) despite support confirming those features were still in development yesterday (8/11/2020) ... show more

  • Ideal floodlight spec but no robut
Color: White | Single Floodlight Camera
This Swann outdoor camera has the ideal spec of a floodlight motion-sensor camera, Alexa-compatible with free 5-day cloud storage. The price point is competitive compared to similar products such as Nest and Arlo. The noticeable feature gaps are the lack of basic activity zone and other modernized security camera functions. This review describes some operational issues after using 3 cameras for 9 months, and the alternative solutions. 1. Installation. The installation process is problematic, particularly when connecting to wifi. After 3-5 retries without success, I found that doing 1-2 hard resets (press the reset button) would solve the wifi connection issue. Upon troubleshooting, I learned that the camera has short timeout behavior when connecting to the wifi despite that the wifi signal is strong (e.g. 3-4 bars out of 4). 2. Video recording. The floodlight lamp could be easily triggered by its motion sensor often at night while there is no big object movement . Upon inspecting the Playback tab, I could not find any event or videos in the history. After careful investigation, I found out the camera motion sensor light is sensitive to dangling spiderweb, or small flying insects (remarks: sensitivity setting is medium or low). Unfortunately, the camera did not capture any video even when the floodlight is triggered. In order not to annoy my neighbors and my family with too many floodlight triggers (false alarms), I have to either turn off the motion sensor, or to set the time duration to 1 sec. 3. Camera connection issues. After 3-4 months of serious use, I noticed intermittent camera connection issues from my Swann mobile application (refer to screenshot). The root cause is unknown. After calling the tech support, they suspect a wifi signal issue. They also recommend me to make a hard reset and re-install (re-setup). Since I have strong wifi signals around the house, I install 3 different outdoor security cameras (a different brand) to compare and benchmark the reliability issues. This experiment confirms no wifi signal issue. I learn that I have to reboot the Swann camera, and sometimes I have to re-install the camera or to reboot my wifi router (even though other non-Swann cameras have no issue). Alternatively, I can inspect the camera physically without relying on the mobile application. 4. Latency limitation. It usually takes at least 15-30 minutes to view the videos in the Playback tab after the motion sensor is triggered. This could be a problem if you want to review any potential unauthorized entries remotely at real time (outside the house). In conclusion, if you are looking for a robust and reliable home security solution, Swann probably will not meet your expectation. However, if you intend to use Swann as a secondary floodlight solution (though a bit pricey for this sole purpose) on top of your core outdoor camera, Swann is a compelling choice (e.g. 5 days free cloud storage). ... show more
