  • Mow Joe has MOJO!
Style: 14-Inch, 12-Amp Electric
I love this little guy! I have a very very small lawn in San Francisco. It’s basically two small rectangles - totaling less than 200 sq ft. I’ve tried the old school manual mowers, but I could never get enough momentum to cut the grass evenly. Also, the unit I was using was a little heavy (left wheel lines in the grass). Moreover, with a bordering fence and low lying plants and flowers, it was difficult to cut around the edges. I tried hand trimming it as well. That took hours. My neighbors though I was crazy. I tried I weed whacker but I couldn’t get the grass cut evenly. I tried to rent a gas mower from local dealers. They said it wasn’t worth it for them to stock residential mowers in a city that doesn’t have too many “lawns.” I tried local landscapers. They said the property was too small. Then I stopped trying. I’d water the grass, and it kept growing. It started to look like a jungle. My two little Yorkies would go out to pee and I would lose them in the long luscious blades of my discontent. Then I found the Sun Mow Joe. Before I even got it a return had been initiated because it was damaged during delivery (the return and reship were painless. Amazon and the manaufacturer took care of it automatically). I began to lose hope and thought one day my small home would be devoured by the green monster. Then the mower finally arrived. So simple to assemble. It’s smaller than I thought it would be. Small blade too. Looked flimsy and was very light. I tried not to get my hopes up. I plugged it in. It was quiet. I liked that. It cut quickly and evenly. I started to get excited. I mowed a little longer and then it died. I screamed at the blue sky above me, “BLAST! CURSES! DARN IT TO HECK! MY GRASS IS TOO ROBUST FOR THIS FEEBLE CONTRAPTION!” I unplugged the infernal machine and tipped it over. The trimmings bag was full. I emptied it. The mower began cutting again. With ease! Such ease. I had to empty the bag 4 times. But the grass was cut so evenly. My lawn looked so good. My dogs love it now. I began to tear up. Two years of disappointment slowly dripped away. I only used it once. Had zero issues. I’ve read complaints about the longevity. I would reckon that this is a MAINTENANCE mower for small lawns. I understand that’s probably a small vertical market but there is a market. The cord is a bit of hassle, but finding and going to a gas station in SF is more of a hassle to be honest. I don’t think a cordless mower would have worked as well either. I thought because the mower was so that was so light it would be a problem. On the contrary, it didn’t leave heavy wheel indentations in my grass. And I can easily pick it up and store it in my basement. Other “complaints:” there is a height setting on the mower, but I wish I could keep the grass a little taller. Also, the bag filled up quickly. But I’m partly to blame because the grass was so high. Also, a bigger bag would just make the unit bigger. So I guess that wouldn’t make sense. Just ignore the last comment. I hope you are able to enjoy the benefits of this little wonder as much as I did! Merry mowing! ... show more

  • Better than Expected!
Style: 14-Inch, 28-Volt 4-Amp Cordless
We have a mini farm and im disabled. My husband uses the riding mower but we have some areas that are hard to get to. This little mower is perfect for that. I can use it because its lightweight. I don't have to mess with gas, oil ect.. I have COPD and RA so the easier to use the better. The little bag holds more than you think also. The mower mulches up the grass to a really finely chopped consistency. The charge on the battery last about an hour. The only thing is that you don't want to run over anything heavy like small branches or rocks. I thought I broke it because I ran over a small branch in some pretty tall grass and the mower died. I was able to check it out and get it started again and all was good. In tall grass it will die sometimes but able to get through it. Nice little mower and Nice to be able to help with the yard sometimes ( health and weather permitting ) ☺️ ... show more

  • Good "Maintenance" Mower for Small Lot
Style: 14-Inch, 12-Amp Electric
I purchased this mower to replace my "lawn fairies" after a small disagreement. Since my total lot size is quite small, and since I thought it would be a good idea to get a little more exercise, this seemed like a good plan, and I anticipate the mower will pay for itself in less than 3 months at one mowing every 2 weeks. The package arrived on time. The box itself was slightly damaged, but not significant. It was reasonably light (shipping weight is listed at 33.8lb and that seemed about right) and easy to unpack. All parts were included. It took me about 15 minutes to put it together, which was about 4 steps: 1. remove all packaging material 2. attach the lower handle with 2 screws 3. attach the cord tension keeper and upper handle 4. attach the grass catcher Setting the wheel height was a little bit tricky. The housing is made of thick plastic but it is still a little flexible, but I didn't expect an industrial-quality mower. I then set out to mow my lawn, which had (due to the inattention of the aforementioned "lawn fairies") achieved rain-forest-like stature over the course of 4 unattended weeks. I was concerned that it would prove to be too much for this little guy (and the mower), but the Mow Joe powered right through. I used the highest cutting position to ease the work-load. The grass catcher is rated for 10.6 gallons, and in the course of mowing my roughly 30'x40' patch of jungle I filled three 39-gallon trash bags. The first time I didn't realize that the catcher had filled, but I quickly learned to recognize the signs (the mower became difficult to push and small patches of grass were left un-cut) and afterwards I had no trouble. Emptying the grass catcher bag was the part that slowed me the most. It took me about an hour and a half to tame the primeval tangle that had become my front lawn, counting a few stops for water and a hat. I used a 50' 12-gauge extension cord (link included below) and had no difficulties at all. I suspect that many of the other reviews complaining about motor burn-out may be related to the power cord. There is one corner of the lot I can't quite reach, so my advice is get a good 12-gauge cord in 100' length - it's a little heavy to drag around but you'll save yourself some frustration. The 14" width meant I had to make extra passes, but I don't see that as a significant issue. (Of course, in a few weeks I'll probably be complaining mightily about it. I'll update my review then.) The cut was pretty even, although I thought it was maybe a little short. That may have been perception compared to what it had been before. Noise was quite good - it sounded like a large electric fan, not very loud at all. People inside the house couldn't hear it at all. There was no smell except good clean grass. I got in the habit of holding the extension cord with the power switch, which helped to keep it off the ground and reduced any tendency to pull against it. I've attached a couple of pics to show what the grass was before and after, as well as how close you can get to the edge of a building. The mower is very maneuverable, but it feels a little flimsy when turning (especially turning sharply or in thicker cover) and you'll need a trimmer to get the growth by a vertical object like a house or fence. I think this is a fair maintenance mower for a small lot. Don't expect it to be useful for the "north 40" or really anything much more than a 50'x50' space, and definitely plan to keep up with the cutting - if the grass gets long it'll be a lot more work.
